BLACK HISTORY MONTH MATCHING ACTIVITY -‐ ACCOMPLISHMENTS Maya Angelou I was a Pulitzer Prize nominated poet and an author who made history as the first African-‐ American woman to write a non-‐fiction best selling book. Jackie Robinson I broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball when I debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Lena Horne I was an award winning singer and actress who performed on Sesame Street and with The Muppets. Martin Luther King, Jr. I led the civil rights movement in American and had a dream that one day, children “will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Mo’ne Davis In 2014, I became the first African-‐American girl to play in the Little League World Series, and the first girl to ever pitch a shutout in the tournament’s history. Charlie Parker I was a saxophone player who helped to invent bebop jazz with my friend Dizzy. People liked to call me ‘Bird’. Rosa Parks I helped to end segregation in America by refusing to give up my seat on a public bus in Montgomery Alabama. Thurgood Marshall In 1967 I became the first African-‐American justice of the United States Supreme Court. Ruby Bridges In 1960 I was the first African-‐American child to attend an all-‐white public elementary school in the South. Barack Obama When I was elected president of the United States, I became the first African-‐American to hold the highest office in the land. Oprah Winfrey For 25 years I hosted one of the most popular TV shows in the world and I started a book club that got millions of people reading. Louis Armstrong I played the trumpet and people consider me one of the most influential jazz musicians in history. You’ve probably heard me sing “What A Wonderful World” in my very unique voice. Bessie Coleman In 1922 I became the first black woman to earn a pilot’s license after learning French, moving to France and earning my license there in a mere 7 months because schools in the U.S. would not allow me to fly. Arthur Ashe I’m the first African American to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon tennis championships and the first black man to be ranked #1 in the world.
