February 2015
Presidents Message
From Wal Harrison
First of all I would like to remind
members of the Annual General
meeting at 6.00pm on Monday 23
February at the club.
The 7 hole “Race to Queanbeyan”
competition starts again on Thursday 12
February at the new starting time of
5.00pm. With $250.00 of weekly prizes
and $400.00 cash up for grabs over the
7 weeks it shouldn’t be missed.
I am pleased to report that we are still
progressing well in our financial
recovery. I will provide more detailed
figures for the six months to date at the
AGM and in next month’s newsletter.
On the social side Trivia recommenced
on Tuesday night’s at 7.00pm. Form a
team and join in. Friday night
entertainment and raffles are also up
and running again.
It’s good to see an increased number of
players on the course. Obviously there
will be some hic ups from time to time
as the numbers increase. Rest assured
that the Captain, CEO, Pro and match
committee will be working to solve any
problems with minimum inconvenience
to our members.
We are looking at the social side of the
club activities including BBQs on
Monthly Medal days and other
promotions for members and would like
to form a social committee to plan these
types of events.
Welcome to the February newsletter.
Whilst it is important financially to
increase green fee players our prime
charter is to our members and decisions
made on the course will always consider
members first.
If anyone is interested in joining this or
any other committee at the club please
contact Glen as we are always looking
for new ideas.
Good Golfing

TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY
COURSE NEWS
Course Super – Bryan Kelly
We are currently operating with only 4
staff following the departure of a full
time groundsman.
Leigh Blyton has been assisting with
rough cutting to allow other staff to
maintain tees, greens, fairways and
bunkers.
Greens are currently being cut daily at
2.5mm. The new brushes and
groomers on the greens mower have
provided more consistent and slightly
quicker putting surfaces.
Fairways are being cut twice per week
with significant growth due to recent
weather conditions.
Some trial oversowing of the 9th
fairway has provided encouraging
results prior to the commencement of
the full fairway oversow in late March
2015.
Bunkers are being weeded and
sprayed as resources allow. I ask for
your patience in this area until we
have a new staff member on board in
mid-February.
The irrigation system continues to be
unreliable and control remains poor.
This provides a number of challenges
when hot weather prevails for any
length of time.
Bryans Tip: When playing in wet
weather and the grip becomes
slippery try wrapping a handkerchief
around it. This should provide some
extra control. 
Good golfing

The Captain’s Desk
From Gail Goiser
The Captain’s Desk
The holiday period was not quiet at
our course and during this period we
tested a number of option “time
sheets” to cater for the increasing
membership base and the big green
fee player request and I would like
to thank the members for their
understanding. To all of our new
members, welcome to the family
and you are wished good golfing and
the forming of wonderful new
friendships. Do not hesitate to
contact if needing any information,
this can be done through: Club
Manager Glen Lloyd, Pro Shop or to
myself with all email addresses on
club website.
Thursday 29 January was the
beginning of the 2015 pennant
season and we started with the best
possible news. Both Masters teams
won with Scratch defeating
Murrumbidgee 4 to 2 and the
Handicap defeating Yowani (1) 4½ to
1½. Congratulations to both teams.
The season for Sunday pennant
players began 1 February, with the
following results:
A Grade at Goulburn against Yowani
had a draw.
B Handicap had a win at home
against Murrumbidgee.
And the Junior team having a bye.

Merit. Entry forms for the Open are

This continues to be an issue.
Well Done!
It is important that if you know that
you are unable to make it that you
delete your name from the booking
sheet as soon as possible.
A big shout out to some of our
members that have come to see myself
or Mat for some lessons over the last
couple of months.
By doing this you enable fellow
members the opportunity to book in
for a game. I.e. a member decides
that they want a game and look on
the booking sheet and find none
available when in fact as many as 20
people are not turning up.
We saw some great scoring over the
Xmas break, and we'd like to point out
some of our pupil’s efforts! Chris
DeMamiel, Russ Kirkpatrick, Amber
Thornton, Kris Cole, Anthony
O'Connor, Brian Walsh, Ray Evans and
Grant Jones all had great scores.
With member numbers increasing in
the past couple of months spots are
filling up faster, so please delete your
name as early as you can if you know
you cannot play.
Solid play from Captain Leigh
Blyton, the ever reliable Glenn Hart,
newcomer Russell Kirkpatrick and
Robert Drew (the quiet achiever)
ensured a good win.
Premier League Golf will start up in
October 2015. Keep an eye out for
more information in
August/September
Also, good luck to all our Pennant
teams this year!!!

MYSTIFYING THINGS ABOUT GOLF
To all our new members
…..Welcome
It’s not until I introduce some new
golfers to the game that I remember
how intimidating a golf club can be.
The game of golf itself is difficult
enough but it comes with a mindbogglingly complicated rule book
and a bizarre set of extra quirks that
very few of us dare to question, if we
even notice them at all.
To those poor people who look at
golf like it’s some sort of alien
invention, it’s a bewildering activity.
They’re more likely to want to
understand quantum physics or the
thought processes of Clive Palmer
then the nuances of golf.
And when you step back and break
down the aspects of the game that
the golf-less find puzzling, you can
start to see why.
Also be sure to uphold the great
etiquette of golf i.e. learn the rules
and play by rules when playing in
club competitions. No gimmes,
make sure you take appropriate
drops and if your ball is lost return to
the spot you played your last shot
from.
So let’s welcome our new members
and all members show that
Queanbeyan is a club where there
are no strangers.

GM’s Update
TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY
From Glen Lloyd
Golf swings into action this month
with the open on 7 February ,
pennants across the region and the
inaugural Australian 3 Person
ambrose on 7 March 2015. Good
luck to all our pennant teams and
competitors involved in other
events.
It is fantastic to see the course in
such great condition following the
recent warm weather and
significant rainfall. It’s even more
pleasing to see so many new faces
around the club.
I would like to take this
opportunity to welcome all the
new playing members who
recently made the decision to join
our great club. I hope you are
enjoying the course and it is living
up to your expectations. I’d also
like to thank all our long standing
members for the manner in which
they have welcomed all our new
members, we are the friendly club
after all.
As always my door remains open
and I’m happy to discuss any issues
or suggestions you may have.
Rumours can be dangerous so
please drop in and see me if you
require any clarification.

Manager Des Byrne on 0438877237

Watch ALL balls until they
stop
Searching for lost balls is one of the
most time-consuming aspects of the
game. After every shot keep an eye
on the ball (yours and your playing
partners’) until it comes to rest—
even if it is in the fairway.
If it has wandered into the deep
rough or trees/ bushes, identify a
marker or reference – a specific tree,
bush, distant house…anything. As
you leave the tee, keep a line of
sight onto that marker.
ONE TEE TRIAL
The one tee trial has been a huge
success with green fee play
increasing considerably on Saturday
afternoons.
Some spots are now available on the
back nine from 7 til 8 am on
Saturdays.
Please be patient on Sundays during
Pennant season.
Packages can include Membership,
Advertising on-course, in-club or in
newsletters, tickets to special
events, Corporate Golf Days and
other benefits tailored to your
needs. Get the attention of both
members and visitors to our club

Junior News
Firstly I’d like to thank Gail Goiser for the fine work she’s done with the Queanbeyan Juniors in past years, making
sure they felt like part of the club in every way. I’d like to welcome all the new members to the club and it’s great
to see the young ones coming in as they will be a huge part of the club’s future.
Tournament Results
Over the school holidays the golfing performance of the Juniors has been outstanding with two of our members
representing the Jack Newton Junior Golf Team for NSW as they won the 2015 State of Origin, defeating the Junior
Golf Foundation of Queensland by 18.5 matches to 11.5 matches at Newcastle Golf Club. Juniors Amber and Chloe
Thornton both showing their golfing talents with Amber winning 2 of her 4 matches and Chloe winning 4 out 4.
The Harvey Norman Junior Week of Golf over 5 days. In Junior Section: Chloe Thornton finished 3rd - 375 (78,72,76,71,78). In Sub Junior Amber was the Winner – Girls 13yrs - 396 - (80,80,80,76,80). Well done Girls!
Lachlan Tisma, Trent Britton, Mitchell O’Brien, Harry Smith, Matthew McKenzie and Kris Cole represented
Queanbeyan at the ACT Junior & Colts Classic which was held in early January at the Yowani. Again some stellar
performances, with Kris Cole winning the Colts stroke event with a score of 79 and in the Junior category Division 2
Mitchell O’Brien winning the Stableford event with a score of 37 points and Harry Smith just missing out 4th spot
on a count back with 32 points. Well done boys and a special thanks to Gail Goiser who again organised this event.
To our local competitions there were many strokes dropped from handicaps, with outstanding Stableford rounds
from Trent Britton 8 scores ranging between 34-37 points, Rory Dicampli 3 rounds 33-40 points, Matthew
McKenzie 3 rounds 32-37 points and Harry Smith 2 rounds 35 & 43 points. Luc Abbott only just getting his handicap
scoring 35 & 38 points, Chloe & Amber Thornton with rounds of 33 & 32 respectively, great results to all.
Pennants
January will see the start of the Pennant season with the new combined Junior and Encourage teams, comprising
of 6 players in Preliminary rounds and 7 players in finals rounds. Team Players no.1 and 2 will play scratch
matchplay and as their handicap is not being used can play in either position. Team Players no.3 to 6 (but 7 in
finals) will play handicap match-play and will therefore, play strictly in ascending handicap order (i.e. lowest
handicap plays at number 3, second lowest at number 4, etc). The team is ready go and are all very excited with
the opportunity to play at the different courses around the region.

Mat is still out of action from his car accident. This has meant he has been unable to teach as often as usual, and that
our Junior Clinics are currently on hold until he is comfortable to teach again. Apologies if this has inconvenienced any
