Mosquito season is here!
The continual high humidity, temperatures and
consistent storms and showers have provided
ideal conditions for the freshwater and container breeding
mosquitoes to explode in number.
These mosquitoes are breeding in anything that is accumulating
water on private properties and inaccessible areas of reserves.
Council worked hard over the Christmas break to manage the
mosquito numbers including hand treating water accumulating in
parks and reserves as well as conducting ultra low volume
spraying, fogging and barrier treatments through the parks and
reserves of the region as well as aerial treatments to help
reduce adult numbers.
Whilst Council will continue these treatments, it is recommended
that you use repellent and consistently check your yard for
anything that is accumulating water as the numbers will remain
high until there is a change in the weather.
One of my fellow Councillors recently saw this home-made
mosquito trap on Facebook and I have included it here if you
would like to give it a go.
HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP
Items needed:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1 or 2-litre bottle
How:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let
cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide,
which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the
bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top
uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your
normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the
colour black.) Change the solution every two weeks for
continuous control.

Celebrate Australia’s 25th national Clean Up campaign by registering a site and
organising your family and friends on Sunday 1 May. The business clean up day
is Tuesday 24 February and the schools clean up day will be on Friday 27

Queensland needs some help from the community to get the message out there
so now is the time to begin organising your army of volunteers and register your
site online at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/register. Council will contact all site
coordinators and assist with resources and waste recycling collection on the day.
