CLARK CONNECTIONS
February, 2015
From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Clark families,
With the return from the holidays, we had some chilly weather as well as some mild
days. Using our Cold Weather guidelines, we make changes to our daily routines depending on the daily temperature. When the weather is -20 degrees, with or without the
wind chill, we limit the amount of time our students are outside. If the weather is –25
degrees Celsius or below, with or without the wind chill, we keep the children indoors.
On days like this we gather children indoors when staff supervision begins at 8:25am.
Please ensure your children arrive to school on time. Arriving late to school means that
your children are missing valuable instructional time, as well as disrupting the learning
of others.
January has been a very busy month! On January 15th, the School Council meeting
had several invited guests from within the school: our staff and students! Parents
learned about the various ways students use technology to demonstrate their learning
in literacy and numeracy. Thank you to Mrs. Zonta and Mrs. Dhillon and their students
for sharing their learning and creativity using technology.
On January 23rd, the Clark Junior Choir sang the national anthem’s at the Brampton
Beast hockey game. A huge thank you to Mrs. Pekar for organizing this fabulous opportunity. On January 29th, the Junior Basketball team travelled to Balmoral Senior PS
for a fun and active tournament with six other schools from our area. A big thank you to
Mr. Calabria for organizing this event on behalf our community. Thank you to the parents who attended these events, cheering on our students!
February will continue to be a busy month at Clark. This month our school committee
has planned special assemblies and activities in recognition of Black History
month. Please join us as we highlight and recognize the contributions of the many
citizens who shared a common vision of equity for all.
Clark is a great place to learn and work. Thank you Clark families, for continuing to
support your child's learning, by reading and doing mental math with your children,
talking to them about what’s important to them, and taking the time each day to ensure
your children start the day on the right foot, by arriving to school on time.
Sincerely,
Deborah Falcao-Linton

Extended-day program for kindergarten students
Families have the option of enrolling their child in before and after-school programs developed by the Ministry of Education to
complement the kindergarten program. These programs are run by qualified, experienced staff from our childcare partners. At
registration, we will ask families to tell us whether they are interested in the extended-day programs. The programs can only run
if there is enough interest among familites.

Students who have demonstrated developmental disability, physical disability, hearing or vision loss or ASD/PPD diagnosis may
require specialized support in the school setting.

Everyone is a math teacher, parents included
Parents and other adults in our students' lives are important partners in children's mathematics education. By engaging your children in thinking and talking about mathematics, you help support their
numeracy success.
To help you with this, one great resource is the Ministry of Education's Doing Mathemathics With
Your Child. You can find this guide for parents of children in Kindergarten to Grade 6 online at
www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/literacynumeracy/parentGuideNumEn.pdf. For more math tips and tools

Celebrating Black History Month
Every February, Canadians mark Black History Month, an important annual celebration of the accomplishments of Canadians who trace their family heritage to Africa and the Caribbean.
The proud legacy of black Canadians goes back to the early beginnings of Canadian history. The
great sacrifices and tremendous contributions of their community have helped to create the Canada
of today.
Clark Blvd PS is part of a diverse community and is proud to mark Black History Month with variety
of activities throughout the month of February. In addition to our daily recognition of important
events and people we have two assemblies planned for our school on the 17th and 20th. Rosemary Sadlier, who is the President of the Ontario Black History Society, will be partnering with Clark
Blvd and our Step Group to highlight the importance of this month. In addition, we will be working
with Drum et al to learn about the concept of Ubuntu, meaning I am "you" to celebrate unity and
togetherness.
We thank the staff leaders of this committee: Mr. Adewumi,
Ms. Sterling, Mrs. Lynch, Ms. McFarlane, Ms. Brown and Ms. Henry.
Clark Junior Choir sings at Brampton Beast
Hockey Game
My name is Pavneet. I am in Grade 5, Mr. Moar’s class. On
Friday, January 23rd, 2015 at the Powerade Centre, the Junior Choir proudly sang the national anthem of Canada and
the United States. It felt very exiting because it was my first
time on ice and being at a live hockey game. I would like to
thank Mrs. Pekar for organizing all this!
Winter Walk Day
Clark Boulevard PS was out in full force to celebrate Winter Walk Day on February 4,
2015. Teachers announced the event to parents at an assembly by wearing pedometers and having a walk off in front of the students. We made connections to the role
parents, school and students themselves play in getting 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day. A challenge was issued to teachers to wear a pedometer for
the duration of the event & record their total steps.
The Grade 5 Students set up breakout physical activities for classes to enjoy such as
tobogganing, frosty the snowman tag, RPS football, snow fort building and a winter
walk cheer competition. The end result was 650 smiling faces begging for more time
outside! We saw literacy, problem solving math, and of course physical literacy in a
novel environment - SNOW! Thank you to Mrs. Neal, Clark staff and Carla Alfieri,
Region of Peel Health, for organizing this fabulous event!!
