PASTOR’S PAGE
“How can you say that!”
demanded the surprised barber.
“I am here, and I am a barber.
And I just cut your hair!”
Dear Friend,
Here is an old story from the days
when a man could get his hair cut
at a barbershop instead of hair
salon.
A man went to a barbershop to
have his hair cut and his beard
trimmed. As the barber cut and
trimmed, they had a pleasant
conversation. They talked about
many things on a variety of
subjects: sports, politics, even
religion. When they touched on
the subject of God, the barber
declared, “I don't believe that God
exists.”
“Why do you say that?” asked the
customer.
“Well, all you have to do is read
the papers or watch the news on
T.V. to realize that God does not
exist. Tell me, if God existed
would there be so much
sickness?
Would there be
abused children? Would there be
war and violence and poverty? If
God existed would there be
suffering or pain? I can't imagine
a loving God would allow these
things.”
After his haircut was finished, and
he paid the barber, the customer
left the shop.
Immediately he
saw a man with long, stringy hair
and an untrimmed beard. He
looked unkempt and disreputable.
The customer turned back, reentered the barbershop and
declared, “Barbers don't exist!”
“No!” exclaimed the customer.
“Barbers do not exist because if
they did, there would be no
people with long, stringy hair and
untrimmed beards like the man I
just saw outside.”
“Ah, barbers do exist!” said the
barber. “What happens is that
people do not come to me.”
“Precisely,” the customer replied.
“That's the point. God does exist!
What happens is that people do
not look for God, and do not go to
God. And that's why there's so
much pain and suffering in the
world.”
Through all of our days, good
days and bad days, hard times
and easy, may we always look for
God, and go to God. Until we
meet again, and I get my Lenten
haircut,
May God be with you,
David

Observations
By Carol Bates
Gifts. What does that term mean
to you? It’s easy to define the
term to mean presents that are
given to our family members and
friends.
Sometimes it’s a
physical gift, other times it may
be our time and attention or a
promise to perform a service in
the future.
Those are all
wonderful things to give and
receive.
However, the definition I’m
focused on for this article is the
gifts given to us through God’s
grace.
They are not things
earned or paid for, but skills and
attributes freely provided to us
just because God is God. The
challenge to each of us is to put
them to good Christian use.
This week in my Three Simple
Rules class I was reminded that
these gifts can be used to do no
harm and to do good. As my
class discussed the ways JUMC
does good, a list was developed
of the many things that are done
with and through the church for
each other, for those in our
immediate area and around the
world. Some of us use our gifts
to assist in the running of the
church, others use their gifts to
bring help and hope to those who
need the attention. Still others
use their gifts to spread the Good
Word to those who need to hear
it, perhaps even for the first time.
How are you using your Godgiven gifts to sustain and improve
what JUMC means to the world?

OUR LENTEN
JOURNEY
Lent is a season of spiritual
renewal.
Lent is a time to
simplify our lives, let go of
whatever slows us down, and
move closer to God. Our Lenten
Journey begins with our
Ash Wednesday Service,
February 18, 7:30pm. In this
simple solemn service, we
confess our sin and mark
ourselves with ashes as a sign
of our heart's desire to draw
closer to Christ.
Our Lenten Journey continues
with a study titled Forgiveness.
This six week course will be held
on Sunday mornings at
9:30am,
beginning
February
22nd,
Thursday mornings at
on
and
9:30am,
beginning
on
th
February 26 .
Topics
include
self-examination,
honesty, repentance, forgiving,
reconciliation and restoration.
Cost for the course is $10.
Please register for this class
through the Church Office, 8777332, or sign up in Fellowship
Hall.
And once again, our Lenten
Journey will include a six week
experience in Christian Yoga.
This six week class will meet on
Tuesday evenings from 7:00 –
8:00pm in Fellowship Hall, and
will combine the intentional
physical movement of yoga with
the meditative practice of
Christian contemplation. Cindy
Reinker will lead us in gentle
yoga practice while David will
highlight various forms of
Christian prayer.
Cindy has
been practicing yoga for over ten
years and is a certified teacher
with Yogafit Inc. You should
wear comfortable clothes, bring
a mat for yoga if you have one,
and a pillow or cushion for sitting
if you desire. Please register for
this class through the Church
Office, 877-7332, or sign up in
Fellowship Hall.

helped countless people to get
off the streets, have a home,
and begin making changes in
their lives. HAC is also the proud
operator of the Outreach Van
program which assists hundreds
of people on the streets each
year by providing them with
compassionate human contact,
a listening ear, food, clothing,
blankets, and referrals and
transportation to area services.
The socks that are donated by
JUMC will be given to the
homeless population of Albany
and are greatly appreciated.
HAC is requesting MENS

Thankfully
children are not seen out on the
