THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN www.jackpotmagazine.com HEARD IT ON THE RIVER by Rudi Schiffer The December revenue figures are out and river casinos in Mississippi are UP in December compared to December of last year and when compared to November. Per a report in the February issue of Mississippi Louisiana Gaming News, river casinos in Mississippi took in $83,356,041 in December 2014, up eight-tenths-of-one-percent compared to the $82,658,681 they collected in December 2013. The increase is good news. The news gets even better, too. Compared to a November $73,114,619 revenue figure, river casinos experienced an impressive 12.3 percent jump in December. The revenue increase at river casinos in December is welcome development, especially when compared to November revenue. With gas prices dropping like a stone and some positive economic indicators out there, we might just get some wind in our sails. Properties here have begun to share in more co-op marketing initiatives and it can only help. The Tunica CVB recently ran a regional campaign for its casino members and this column lauded that push. We need more of this. That said, we don’t need to leave things to chance, either, when looking at the long-term picture. I believe there is a way to boost business down the road and that’s legal sports betting. Las Vegas has a virtual stranglehold on that stream of revenue and thus far, no state has mounted a successful challenge to share the pie, although Gov. Chris Christie in New Jersey is still trying. (Maybe if he runs for president in the next election he might have more clout for change.) Or maybe, some of the big money in Louisiana and Mississippi should mount a lobbying campaign to get the ball rolling, because in the not-to-distant future, legal online and sports betting would be a good bet. With the Super Bowl fresh on our minds, consider this tidbit: The American Gaming Association (AGA) estimates the amount of illegal Super Bowl betting in United States is 38 times greater than legal betting on the big game. Legal Super Bowl bets amount to about $100 million, according to the AGA, while illegal Super Bowl bets amounts are estimated at $3.8 billion. You do the math. Maybe this will be part of the conversation at the upcoming Southern Gaming Summit, May 5-7, on the Gulf Coast, where industry leaders will hopefully map out a sound, proactive approach to keeping this industry vital in Mississippi. Talking about looking ahead, there is a lot on tap at area casinos in February and you’ll want to get in on the action. By Paul Wade HOROSCOPE Your sign offers a supreme paradox, Aquarius Editor’s Note: Horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes only and are for the time period February 5 - February 18, 2015. !QUARIUS *AN &EB — Who are you exactly? The supreme paradox of your sign, Aquarius, strikes again, for someone often described as the most individualistic person in the zodiac, you are far more concerned with the dynamics of the collective, the group and what others desire than most people. 0ISCES &EB -ARCH — If you’re looking for new romance or more happiness in your existing relationships, you cannot get better than the combination of planets in your sign than now. Mars suggests passion and Venus means love; Neptune shows an intuitive rapport, while Chiron paves the way to heal wounds from the past. Subtlety and nuance are your way to proceed. !RIES-ARCH!PRIL — This period sees you keen on spending more time by yourself. Yet since there is little reduction in the demands being made on your time, you may discover you have just a few moments of privacy and you appreciate it all the more as a consequence. 4AURUS!PRIL-AY — This period puts an intense focus on your career affairs, along with any other commitments you have taken on that emphasize a professional remit, rather than something more personal to you. When you get home at night you feel a warm sense of contentment. 'EMINI -AY *UNE — Mercury retrograde means mix-ups and misunderstandings, lost correspondence, travel chaos, etc. Mercury is linked to your constellation so you’ll see a number of your ideas being challenged and held up for review. #ANCER*UNE*ULY — This period suggests a great time for a vacation or longer sojourn overseas, while on the other hand promoting enlightenment and a process of re-education that creates a clear break from your previous perspective. Just do your best to ensure this signals a natural progression, rather than running away from complicated relationships. THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN www.jackpotmagazine.com ,EO*ULY!UG— Looking again at your relationships, maybe things really have moved too fast. At this time you can draw breath and think again about what has come to pass in all your closest associations, and where that differed from what you had wanted and expected. 6IRGO!UG3EP— The elevation of the asteroid Ceres is dwarfing your planet status and it’ll take a rewrite of current astrological wisdom to incorporate. Ceres isn’t until June, so don’t let this period get the better of you. ,IBRA3EP/CT— Planets pinpoint your everyday activities, like your workaday routines and health affairs for example. The latter are something we can all occasionally take for granted, but such matters are swiftly returned to the forefront of your attention during any bout of illness. Pay attention to your physical well-being. 3CORPIO /CT .OV — With the Sun and Mercury meeting in the sector of your horoscope governing your home life, domestic situation and family affairs, you are thinking at length about where you’re living presently and about your plans for the future. Your relationship to your nurturing parent is back under the microscope. 3AGITTARIUS .OV $EC — This period is highlighting your inner life, along with your emotional needsAt this time you can withdraw into the bosom of your family, enjoying safety and security behind closed doors. #APRICORN$EC*AN— While your finances look relatively rosy and certainly far better than was the case in the recent past, much of this has come about through the influence of other people and their input into your economic circumstances. This is an unusual state of affairs that deviates considerably from the norm. You will eventually be back to relying on your own skills and talents.
