HEARD IT
ON THE RIVER
by Rudi Schiffer
The New Year is off to a rough start for the Goodtimes Radio
Show (a.k.a. “The Voice of Tunica). Casinos keep looking for ways
to trim their overhead and who can blame them. It’s a sign of the
tough times we all are experiencing.
I have enjoyed many years in marketing, advertising and public
relations for New York and Connecticut agencies and always told
my clients that cutting back budgets in difficult times was not a good
way to go - just short-term savings at the cost of sound exposure
to the market. One old guru told me that when times are tough,
increase your budget and be more selective about its use and thus
gain market share. But who am I to espouse this position. I’m just an
old codger who has been in the Tunica market from day one.
Signs of better times have popped up. We have seen an uptick
in commercial and retail development in the Mid-South and
companies are hiring. Gas prices are at their lowest level in years.
Also on a positive note, Wall Street is kicking butt. And maybe the
new blood coming to Washington in January will get things moving
again. I voted for you Obama, but perhaps it’s time for a completely
new look, even if it does mean a total Republican takeover next
election. I’d switch affiliation from Democrat to GOP but I’m not
rich enough. Maybe better times are in the offing, but I doubt I’ll
be able to enjoy them. Maybe it’s time for “The Voice” to move on.
Stay tuned.
Speaking of good times: The Tunica casinos were busy putting
their best foot forward for New Year’s Eve as this column was being
penned. So too were the gaming gurus in West Memphis as were the
people at casinos further south in Lula and Greenville. As I wrote
this, balloons and party favors were being positioned, Champagne
was being chilled and the sound people were preparing for all of the
bands to hit the stage for a night of merrymaking. Hopefully, NYE
marked the beginning of a better year for everyone.
FITZ CASINO & HOTEL is big on the New Year judging
from the name of its big January giveaway. The “It’s Gonna be a
Good Year Giveaway” pretty much explains the forecast for next
year from the folks at Fitz. The giveaway takes place every Friday
and Saturday this month, where one can win up to $500 in Promo
Cash. There will be lots of winners so chances are good. Play at

winter with its Winter Festival Menu in January. It includes such
items as braised pot roast with red potatoes, pecan crusted pork loin
with homemade apple butter, baked tilapia with lemon dill sauce,
vanilla corn pudding and pork cassoulet. Sounds like the making for
a warming meal on a cold winter’s night. In February, the theme at
the buffet is Mardis Gras. We are talking sausage and chicken gumbo,
fried green tomatoes with crawfish gravy, finger licking chicken with
dirty rice and okra, shrimp, and Andouille sausage with cheese grits
and fresh craw daddies. Are you hungry yet?

WSOP Circuit returns to Tunica Jan. 22
TUNICA RESORTS — The World Series of Poker Circuit returns to Tunica Resorts this season with a new home. For the first
time in the tour’s history, the Horseshoe Tunica will host a Circuit
event.
Horseshoe Tunica has been part of poker history since it opened
its doors. Jack Binion, a member of the Poker Hall of Fame and son
of WSOP founder Benny Binion, originally founded it. Now, the
Horseshoe Tunica becomes part of the WSOP Circuit as well. The
Circuit stop will run from Jan. 22 to Feb. 2, and tournaments will
be held in Bluesville, the Horseshoe’s concert venue. The schedule
features 12 official WSOP Circuit events.
The winner of each will receive a WSOP Circuit gold ring and
points on the Circuit Leaderboard. The winner of the $1,675 Main
Event (Jan. 30-Feb.2) will also earn a free entry into the 2015 WSOP
National Championship.
One additional seat in the National Championship is up for
grabs. The top point-earner throughout the 12 events earns the title
of Casino Champion and will join the Main Event winner at the
National Championship.
There will also be a full schedule of non-ring events as a part
of this tournament series, including a $250 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament, a $250 H.O.R.S.E. event, a $250 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo
event, and nightly $135 tournaments.
The newly renovated 25-table World Series of Poker themed
poker room at Horseshoe Tunica features a WSOP lounge and is
the largest poker room in Mississippi.

Buffet Americana has introduced a
contemporary cooking concept to the MidSouth with delicious kabobs, tikka skewers

the only tandoori oven found in Mississippi.

Delta Blues Buffet captures flavor of area
TUNICA RESORTS — When the Delta Blues Buffet opened, it
ushered in a new era at Resorts Casino. The Buffet was remodeled and
re-branded with new flooring, chairs, tables, countertops and serving
areas. Fresh new colors on the walls and ceilings
and new artwork from the Mid-South and Mississippi Delta add to a new, updated look.
Fresh is a word that could also be used to
describe the design of the Delta Blues Buffet.
The designers of the buffet delivered a casual
sophisticated design that ties into the region. The
look of the carpet reminds one of a flowing river. The gray woodplank inspired floor tiles have a weathered barnwood look and yet are
virtually maintenance free. Art from the region provided by the Delta
Arts Council lines the wall and is available for purchase.
Times for the buffet are as follows: Breakfast is served from 6 to
10:30 a.m., Monday through Sunday, for
$7.99. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.,

Guidelines
When you receive good service at a casino, it
is customary to award the person giving the
good service a gratuity (tip). Jackpot! readers
ask us occassionally what the appropriate
tip to leave might be for quality service for
different casino employees. Obviously, many
things factor into this, so please note that the
information below is just a guideline, and
impeccable service would receive a higher tip.

HOROSCOPE
You relish ability to increase income, Capricorn
Editor’s Note: Horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes only
and are for the time period December 25, 2014 - January 7, 2015.
#APRICORN $EC *AN — During
this period you find that you appreciate
the security of a guaranteed pay packet, but
you’re not fond of being told what to do. Equally,
you relish the prospect of being able to increase
your income through your inner resourcefulness, so
although it looks like an expensive start to the year, by
the end of this month you have the situation tightly
under control.
!QUARIUS *AN &EB — Your
sign is highlighted by the cosmos. It’s a
refreshing change since although you are
more concerned with the dynamics of the collective
rather than personal advancement, it has been a
while since you had a pat on the back. Improve your
approach to guarantee an upbeat response.
0ISCES &EB -ARCH — The
arrival of Mars in your sign on Jan. 12
and the upsurge of energy that you feel
subsequently mark the beginning of a more focused
phase compared to the rather indistinct atmosphere
FROMTHEPAST+ARMICINFLUENCESENSURETHATASYOU
work selflessly for others the more successful you will
ultimately become.
!RIES-ARCH!PRIL — Your focus
moves away from obvious goals toward a
less tangible, yet equally important, slant
on what you have been doing with your life. You
investigate the reasoning behind your intense focus
on professional ambitions and worldly objectives.
4AURUS!PRIL-AY — The past has
taught you plenty. You’re a different person
as a result. A certain duality exists as you’re
still dubious about those holding the purse strings.
You, however, become less fearful. Your public and
private personae head toward a symbiotic alignment.
'EMINI -AY *UNE — This time
puts an emphasis on practical matters, with
career goals and your professional ambitions
in the spotlight. Even if you never were very interested
in furthering your employment interests, it’s not too
THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN ‡ www.jackpotmagazine.com
late to embrace vocational objectives.
#ANCER *UNE *ULY — Since the
beginning your sign has been associated with
the moon. You’ll know how sensitive you
are to lunar cycles when the moon is bright and high
in the sky. This period confirms a turning point for
you. You should review your circumstances and your
progress and consider how far you’ve come.
,EO*ULY!UG— Obligations start
to diminish. Any gaps are soon filled by a
focus on your relationships with those of an
intimate and personal nature in the spotlight. People
looking for somebody to share their life strike it lucky
once a new sense of harmony prevails.
6IRGO!UG3EP— An emphasis
on your domestic and family affairs makes
itself felt. You are aware the current situation
cannot continue and that someone or something will
have to address these outstanding concerns.
,IBRA 3EP /CT — This period
begins with you spending more time at home
than usual in the company of other family
members or those who feel like family to you. Work
eventually prevails from the third week of the month,
but until then it is fun and frolic, with a round of
recreation and a break from your routines.
3CORPIO/CT.OV— Having pared
your life back to its basics in terms of your
relationships, main expectations and what
you want to do, it is time to apply this to the material
sphere and where you stand within it. That means
that for an extended period you are going to see a
thorough review of your income and expenditures.
3AGITTARIUS .OV $EC — Saturn
begins a journey through your sign, helping
you to sort out a number of issues that are
threatening to run away with you. With too much
on your plate, nothing is done so well as it might be.
