HEARD IT
ON THE RIVER
by Rudi Schiffer
Somewhere where great Indian chiefs go to their final resting
place, CHIEF PHILLIP MARTIN, the legendary former leader
of the MISSISSIPPI BAND OF CHOCTAWS, is smiling from his
usual stoic demeanor at the re-incarnation of GOLDEN MOON,
a hallmark of his rule.
The Golden Moon at PEARL RIVER RESORT will officially
reopen on Jan. 31 and Chief Martin will be there in spirit for the
fulfillment of his driving push for tribal self-determination. First
elected in 1979, he died at the age of 83 in 2010. Under his guidance
and unrelenting drive to lift his people from the hard existence that
had held down generations, he changed all that, and the development of Pearl River led the way for all Indian casinos.
When the Golden Moon opened in 2002 it was an eye-opening
complex with the hotel/casino crowned by a huge planet-like globe
perched atop an arched building leading to the sky. That beacon is
still in place but below it much has changed.
The renovation, under the guidance of CHIEF PHYLLIS ANDERSON, and HOLLY GAGNON, president and CEO, the Resort utilizes design and technology to create “an unparalleled entertainment, gaming and lodging experience” for its guests.
The new look includes remodeled hotel rooms, a revitalized
70,000 square foot gaming floor that encompasses 1,150 slot machines, 25 table games, an elevated 14 table poker room and a stunning one-of-a-kind video wall, as a well as a new bar, which is the
centerpiece of the circular room.
New state-of-art technology plays a large part in the renovation.
Along with its sister casino SILVER STAR, Golden Moon now features Konami Gaming’s award-winning casino management system
known as SYNKROS. It allows players to enjoy new slots and an
integrated gaming experience not available previously.
After I attended the opening of Golden Moon, I returned to visit
it many more times, not only drawn by all the outstanding amenities, but also in admiration of what the Choctaws had accomplished.
From tough times to being a premier gaming and entertainment enterprise, Chief Phillip’s dream lives on.
It’s a big time for poker in Tunica right now. First up is the WSOP
CIRCUIT at HORSESHOE TUNICA Jan. 22 to Feb. 2. In this series the tournaments will be held in BLUESVILLE, the Horseshoe’s
concert venue. The schedule features 12 official WSOP Circuit
events. For more information on the WSOP, check out the story on
page 18 in this issue of Jackpot! Magazine.
Then at HOLLYWOOD CASINO TUNICA, the HOLLYWOOD POKER OPEN returns Feb. 26-March 8. There are plenty
of opportunities to win a seat in the $1,115 buy-in main event. A
complete tournament schedule for the Hollywood Poker Open can
be found in a story on page 26 in this issue. The WSOP Media Tour-
nament took place Sunday. Action News 5’s Michael Clark was the
winner. The Tunica Humane Society, his charity, received $1,000.
IN MEMORIAM
Chuck Miller has passed, a sad loss for his beloved family and
for all the people he touched in Mississippi gaming circles. As
senior vice president and general manager of the Fitz Casino &
Hotel in Tunica, he was viewed as a thoughtful, kind and considerate gentleman.
It’s not an easy job, running a competitive casino, but he did
so for more than five years at the Fitz and the ship was always on
course. I began a friendship with him 13 years ago when he was
working for Caesars Entertainment in Tunica and later when he
operated as president and CEO for Pearl River Resort. He returned to Tunica in 2009 and sadly passed away last week from a
month-long illness.
Chuck was often seen on the casino floor, greeting guests, visiting with dealers and picking up any trash he saw on the floor. He
was a hands-on leader. He would graciously ask me every time we
met… “What can I do for you, Rudi,” which made me always feel
welcome and wondering what could I do for the Fitz.
He engendered class.
SAM’S TOWN HOTEL & GAMBLING HALL now has a
growler station at SMOKEY JOE’S. Any hipster knows that
growlers are used to transport a large quantity of craft beer that
comes straight from the tap to the bottle. We’re talking 64 ounces!
It’s a great way to enjoy fresh tap beer at home or in your hotel
room. Read all about it on page 23 in this issue.
SAMMY HAGAR’S RED ROCKER BAR AND GRILL is
now open at SOUTHLAND PARK GAMING & RACING with
55 HDTVs, drink specials and bar food. At the Red Rocker they
have Monday Pint Nights, Two For Tuesdays, Live Team Trivia
Wednesdays ($500 in prizes), Thursday Fantasy Sports and Dart
Tournament Sundays, $300 cash added to prize pool.
Blackjack is my game and there is a tournament coming up
that has piqued my interest. The Perfect Pair $25,000 Blackjack
Tournament at GOLD STRIKE is set for Friday and Saturday, Feb.
13-14. Registration is Friday, Feb. 13, 2 to 11 p.m. Play starts at 8
p.m. Late registration is Saturday, Feb. 14, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Tipping
Guidelines
When you receive good service at a casino, it
is customary to award the person giving the

ask us occassionally what the appropriate
tip to leave might be for quality service for
different casino employees. Obviously, many
things factor into this, so please note that the
information below is just a guideline, and

HOROSCOPE
Go out and make a good impression, Aquarius
Editor’s Note: Horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes only
and are for the time period January 22 - February 4, 2015.
!QUARIUS *AN &EB — While
you’ve become habituated to your position
behind the scenes and rather enjoy the
advantages of a low profile, the planets in your sign
won’t let you get away with this and call your whole
way of dealing with the world into question. Ensure
that first impressions are conveying the right picture.
0ISCES &EB -ARCH — It is time
for those plans you’ve been working on
lately to glimpse the light of day. But while
you are getting started, remember that self-awareness
is advisable for optimization. It is important to keep
busy and physically active if you can, since your
energy is strong during this period. Make a deliberate
effort to channel it into positive pursuits.
!RIES -ARCH !PRIL — The
emphasis this period is on the world outside
your window and beyond your front door.
For some, your social life is accentuated. Others may
have concluded they need to keep a closer check on
who they allow through their fire wall.
4AURUS !PRIL -AY — The longer
you spend at home this period the happier
you will be. With your family to keep
you company you are revelling in this supportive
atmosphere and good feelings surrounding you.
Even alone, you feel nurtured and replenished.
'EMINI-AY*UNE— You are never
at your finest when facing endless routines.
You adore variety and your quicksilver
nature is adaptable enough to cope with fast changing
circumstances. Others would be stressed, but your
versatility in a stimulating situations comes through.
#ANCER *UNE *ULY — There is
an element of balance to seek this week,
ensuring your needs and expectations align
with those of other people. Although you aren’t usually
thoughtless or lacking in tact and consideration, your
desire for independence and extreme awareness of
anyone attempting to manipulate or control your
behavior might lead to an impulsive reaction.
,EO*ULY!UG— Your relationships
feel more rewarding and harmonious, yet
you are troubled by the sense they continue
to hold you back. You are keen on expanding your
frame of reference, but you are struck by how many
leads have grown cold, not reaching full potential.
6IRGO !UG 3EP — Many are
beginning the year with good intentions
based on getting fitter and developing better
health habits. As you’re naturally more concerned
with these issues, it shouldn’t be much of a chore.
,IBRA 3EP /CT — This period
signals romance for those who are single and
looking, or ready to enjoy afresh all the good
things an existing association has to offer. This time
suggests fun, flirtation, recreation and affairs of the
heart. A creative and stimulating trend set to liven up
your current relationships.
3CORPIO/CT.OV— If you were
to align the heavens with your sign and then
assess the layout of the planets, you’d notice
the vast majority are occupying a hidden sector.
Symbolically, you will experience an overwhelmingly
introspective period; with your attention drawn
towards your family life and emotional needs.
3AGITTARIUS .OV $EC — The
reward for your efforts is close at hand.
However, in certain fields of endeavor, you
cut corners in the interests of expediency and now
have the consequences to face.
#APRICORN$EC*AN— A number
of planets in your money sector highlight
financial issues. You have been unsettled by
your outgoings recently, some of which are linked
to the time of year, while others have arisen more
unexpectedly. Still, you have developed a strategy for
dealing with these expenses. There are some folks of
your close acquaintance who might be interested in
learning about your moneymaking plans .
