2008 Annual Report Scrapbook
I Did Lots of Stuff
Assembling a scrapbook is a wonderful project for a child, encouraging them to think and
talk about things that are meaningful to them, building their confidence and creativity, and
helping them develop important planning and social skills. To demonstrate the value – and
fun – of scrapbook activities for children and families, we made our own, featuring all of the
important things we did in 2008.
The profound influence of early learning gained national attention in 2008. Education
and school readiness are important issues for our community, and we are proud to be
among the best children’s museums in the country and one of southeastern Wisconsin’s
most respected and popular resources for families with young children. We worked hard in
2008 to ensure that our facility, exhibits and programs reflect the latest education trends, to
meet the needs of the diverse community that we serve, and to educate caregivers about
the importance of early learning to school readiness and academic
success. We also maintained our significant commitment to
ensuring that all children have access to our educational
facility and resources by providing free admission and
memberships to thousands of disadvantaged children,
families and groups. These programs continue to be
inspired by Betty Brinn, who was dedicated to supporting
organizations that help families in need.

My Favorite Things
We began 2008 with Curious George™: Let’s Get
Curious!, a traveling exhibit created by the Minnesota
Children’s Museum that included interactive math, science
and engineering-themed activities featuring the little
monkey that always manages to get into a tricky situation.
The display was sponsored by the Northwestern Mutual
Foundation, a long-time supporter of our efforts to provide
special exhibits for the children and families we serve.
Building on the enduring popularity of A Trading Place –
our kid-sized community – and the installation of our
hugely popular miniature Sendik’s Food Market (where
the registers are always ringing!), we unveiled our
fantastic new WaterStone Bank exhibit. The bank offers
realistic activities for visitors and is complemented by Money
Minders, our new facilitated financial literacy program.
My Biggest Adventure
The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD, the most ambitious exhibit
development project we have ever undertaken, was a highlight of 2008. Debuting
in July, the exhibit follows our much-loved companion on amazing adventures in a
pretend jungle, in outer space, on an archaeological dig, and under the sea. The exhibit
encourages children to welcome new experiences with confidence, curiosity and humor, to think
about all they can be and do, and to always respect themselves and others. Educational activities
throughout the exhibit highlight literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, visual and performing
arts, making healthy choices, and career paths. The exhibit’s opening contributed to a 24% increase
in attendance, and visitors said it was the best special exhibit we have ever displayed!
We are extremely proud of this project and our partnership with Hasbro, Inc., and we are deeply
grateful to our national tour sponsor, Northwestern Mutual, a tremendous advocate for early education
and an important Museum supporter. Northwestern Mutual’s sponsorship provided critical funding for
the development of this exhibit and important support for the exhibit’s four-year tour, which includes
planned stops at cities in Washington, New York, Florida, North Carolina, Kansas, Alabama,
California and Indiana. Additional support for the project was provided by Manpower, Inc. and the
Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Franz and Virginia Bidinger Fund and Community Grant Fund.
The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD reflects our goal of developing exhibits that can be leased
or sold to other family-friendly venues, helping us earn unrestricted operating income and reduce our
reliance on contributions. Our growing exhibit product line has generated inquiries from museums
across the nation and around the world. We remain deeply grateful to Honorary Board members Brian
Stark and Debra Altshul-Stark for their early support of this entrepreneurial effort and their continued
confidence in our work.
With MR. POTATO HEAD wowing families in communities away from home, we began creating a new
exhibit in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service. Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl: Home Sweet
Home is a “green” exhibit that presents activities about sustainability, recycling and taking care
of the planet – our home sweet home. Following a 2009 debut sponsored by National City,
Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl: Home Sweet Home will become our fourth exhibit
product and our third national touring exhibition.
Fun with My
Family
Museum exhibits and programs benefitted more than 207,000 children and adults in
2008 – up 21% from 2007, and 18% higher than our previous record set in 2001! Member
visits rose 25% compared to 2007 and accounted for 34% of our on-site attendance. Our
corporate membership program also grew; in addition to renewed members Children’s
Hospital and Health System, GE Healthcare, Koss Corporation, Northwestern Mutual,
Quad/Graphics, and Stark Investments, we welcomed new members Manpower Inc. and
Mortenson Construction. The Corporate Membership program provides a thoughtful way for
employers to benefit employees and their families while demonstrating their support for the
Museum’s educational mission.
Thanks in part to generous contributions from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Carl and
Lora Otjen Family Fund and Mary L. Nohl Fund, Nicholas Family Foundation, City of Milwaukee Arts Board and Wisconsin Arts Board, and Rockwell Automation, our educational
activities served 63,788 children and adults, and included workshops, off-site programs,
demonstrations and performances. We also expanded activities and programming offered
as part of WaterStone Bank & FOX 6 Neighborhood Night, an evening each month when the
Museum provides free admission. Neighborhood Night ensures Museum access
by working families and those with limited resources, and served a record
6,172 visitors in 2008 (up 31% from 2007).
Things I Shared
The Museum was named in memory of Elizabeth Brinn, who overcame a difficult childhood to become a successful
Milwaukee businesswoman, wife and mother. As an adult, Betty established the Elizabeth A. Brinn Foundation to
provide support for organizations that help children and families living in poverty or crisis. Betty’s life and legacy, and
the unwavering generosity of the Brinn Foundation, continue to inspire our commitment to meeting the needs of
disadvantaged families in our community through outreach efforts that remain central to our educational mission.
Museum outreach served 39,345 participants (up 17% from 2007) in 2008, and was supported by generous grants
from the Dorothy Watkins Inbusch Foundation, Johnson Controls, Joy Global Foundation, and Quad/Graphics.
Family Focus – a nationally recognized program that provides free parenting education, memberships and
transportation assistance to families whose circumstances often limit their access to educational resources –
served a record 862 families in 2008. In addition to community support, our 2008 program was made possible
by grants from the A.O. Smith Foundation, Forest County Potawatomi Community Foundation, Greater Milwaukee
Foundation’s Bright Futures Milwaukee Fund, Harley-Davidson Foundation, Richard and Ethel Herzfeld Foundation,
Stackner Family Foundation and US Bank. Our strong relationships with social service and community agencies have
helped enrich the lives of Family Focus participants and we were deeply
gratified to receive this feedback during the past year:
• “I work with families who are involved in the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare
and have had their children removed. BBCM has given them a positive place to
have visits with their children allowing them to grow and learn and become role
models for positive educational parenting.”

their generosity touches us deeply.”

In addition to Family Focus, we maintained our significant
commitment to ensuring Museum access by disadvantaged
school groups, daycare centers and community organizations.
Almost 26,000 children and adults visited the Museum as
part of a field trip coordinated through their school, daycare
center, or community organization. These groups enjoyed a
variety of exhibits and activities, including our popular
Renewable Energy Works program sponsored by We
Energies. More than half of the participants in our 2008
field trip program (up 16% from 2007) were low-income and
special needs participants who received free or subsidized
admission through our Special Admission Program
established in memory of Mary Leach Smith.
Funding for Family Focus and our Special Admission Program
was a priority of the 2008 Annual Campaign, and remains the
focus of special efforts to secure increased support as the
need for these programs continues to grow.
Special Days
Valentine’s Day and Halloween continue to be some of the best days of the year to
visit (and work at!) the Museum, and our celebrations got bigger and better in 2008.
Support from Sendik’s Food Market, Breadsmith, Golden Guernsey Dairy, and
Sargento for our Valentine Ice Cream Social and Not-So-Scary Halloween events
ensured that visitors had their fill of sweets, special activities and take home treats.
The Museum’s Teacher of the Year Award was created as a tribute to Alice
Bertschy Kadish, a Milwaukee teacher and Museum supporter who was dedicated
to excellence in early education. The May 2008 event presented awards to Lori
Niemoeller, a 4-year-old kindergarten teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School in
Wauwatosa, and Danielle Pajot, a third- and fourth-grade teacher at Woodlands School
in Milwaukee. Our annual Back-to-School Resource Fair – created to help
disadvantaged families prepare young children to return to school or for their first
year – benefited 1,179 children and adults, another new record. Activities included
tours of a real school bus, health and safety information for parents, and schoolthemed art projects. Free books and school supplies were distributed thanks to a
generous donation from the Diedrich Family.
More than 400 guests enjoyed the Museum’s 2008 Gala – Hooked: Neverland After
Dark. The Gala is our most important and visible fundraiser, and our outstanding cochairs, Kim and Carl Tomich, and Museum Board member Deborah Nustad and her
husband, Tim, led a terrific volunteer committee to create a Peter Pan-themed evening
that acquainted new friends with our mission and programs, and secured more than
$164,000 to support the Museum. The Gala’s Patron Sponsor, the Northwestern Mutual
Foundation, set a wonderful example for support, and the Argosy Foundation and local
organizations joined in providing sponsorship for this important annual event.
My Piggy Bank
With disciplined management and success in our efforts to increase earned income, the Museum’s 2008 financial results were
strong. While the Museum met its fundraising goals, several significant contributions were received for specific projects, making
it challenging to fully fund general operations, important outreach commitments, and Museum resources that don’t always get
the spotlight. We are deeply grateful to all of the families who value our mission and helped support us in 2008, including very
generous gifts from Rob and Karen Dishner, Denise and Gary Elfe, and Mike and Jennifer Keough.
We received an exciting commitment from Children’s Hospital and Health System to develop a new health-related exhibit for the
Museum. Children’s Hospital and Health System has been an important partner and supporter, and is the sponsor of our current
health-themed exhibit, My Body Works. My Body Works has been a popular Museum exhibit since our opening in 1995, and we
look forward to unveiling new activities in this area that will communicate the importance of healthy habits to our young audience.
