DuPage Children’s Museum Position Description Position Title: Exhibit Fabrication, Maintenance, and Repair Technician Status: Full-time, benefits eligible Job Classification: Exhibits Job Summary: The Exhibit Fabrication, Maintenance, and Repair Technician position is responsible for fabricating, maintaining, and repairing DCM exhibits, and assisting with building and facilities maintenance as requested. Essential Responsibilities: 1. Prototypes new exhibit components; gives and accepts constructive feedback regarding prototypes and exhibit concepts. 2. Fabricates new exhibit components from drawings or approved prototypes. 3. Maintains museum tools, shop, storage areas, and other resource materials in an appropriate and professional manner. 4. Conducts daily, scheduled and as-needed inspections of exhibits to ensure that they are functioning correctly and are visitor ready. 5. Meets daily with Senior Exhibits Manager to: identify potential problem areas needing immediate or future attention; solve potential emergency situations; perform immediate repairs when warranted; troubleshoot immediate problems identified by routine inspections and staff/visitor feedback; assist in delegating appropriate maintenance and repair tasks to shop volunteers 6. Performs and documents maintenance and repair work on exhibits, which may require various construction techniques as well as painting and laminate, mechanical, electrical, or finish carpentry work. 7. Inspects daily the paint and finishes of all D.C.M. exhibits; works closely with housekeeping and other operations staff to help maintain the appearance of all exhibits. 8. Manages exhibit maintenance quality and timeliness expectations within approved budget. 9. Provides regular, user-friendly management information related to exhibit status. 10. Organizes supplies and manipulatives for easy stocking and inventory. 11. Assembles, installs and removes temporary (rented) exhibits on museum floor as needed. Assists with moving permanent exhibit components to allow display of temporary exhibits. Secondary Responsibilities: 1. As part of the museum maintenance team, may perform other museum repair, maintenance, landscaping, and occasional other activities as needed. 2. Other duties as assigned Job Relationships: Supervised by the Senior Manager of Exhibits. Demonstrates and models a positive collaborative approach and works well as a team member. Demonstrates and models appropriate safety precautions in the shop and when working with tools. Establishes and maintains productive relationships with exhibit staff and vendors. Works collaboratively with the Museum Floor Manager, other D.C.M. staff and volunteers. Behaves appropriately around children and works well with diverse museum visitors. Education and Experience: Must be skilled in use of power tools, machine tools and hand power tools. Requires knowledge of and experience with cabinetmaking. Prefer experience with mechanical and electrical systems, finish carpentry, painting and laminate, fasteners and other building skills. High school or trade school degree mandatory. College degree, technical training, and certification preferred. Familiarity with pool operator guidelines or water pump and filtration systems a plus. Ideal candidate will have some knowledge of CAD program and willingness to learn to program and operate a small CNC router. Skills and Abilities: Superior skills in organizing, determining priorities and taking initiative; willingness and ability to work toward objectives, shifting priorities when needed. Good communication abilities are essential. Ability to use online email and calendar functions a must; basic knowledge of Word, Excel, and Maintimizer Database knowledge a plus. Familiarity with children, educational theory, or teaching certification a plus Ability to operate a forklift vehicle desired. The following abilities are required for the position: (a) Heavy physical exertion and activity will be required; (b) Bend, reach, kneel, squat, walk and climb stairs and ladders; (c) Lift and carry large/bulky items weighing up to 75 pounds; (d) Display the dexterity and motor skills necessary to perform mechanical repairs and work on a variety of machinery; (e) Work outdoors for short periods of time in hot and cold weather; (f) Communicate appropriately, clearly and verbally with museum visitors and co-workers. Comprehend and speak English with the general public and coworkers; (g) Use a keyboard and mouse to enter, retrieve or transfer words or data; (h) Tolerate dust, paint, cleaning solutions and plastic/latex. Other: Must have driver’s license, own transportation and appropriate liability insurance. Schedules may fluctuate depending on the departmental needs. Some evening and weekend hours required.
