why do we have to suffer? Guest Writer Barry Brown At the time of this writing, our daily devotions in George Guthrie’s Reader’s Guide to the Bible have started in the book of Job. I hope you are reading through the Bible this year and following up with Pastor Aaron’s sermons on Wednesday nights, by the way! Reading through the book of Job can be both encouraging and depressing at the same time. Without prior knowledge of how the book of Job ends and reading through the first few chapters, you can tend to shift focus to your own trials and think there’s no real purpose to your own suffering! I can only imagine being hooked up with Mrs. Job and her own “Curse God and die” attitude. That makes the single life look a lot better all the time. But much like David in the Psalms, Job is extremely honest with God. He just tells it like it is - after all that happened to him with health problems to top it off, he’s tired. He’s hurting. He’s exasperated! He says in verse 11 of Chapter 3, “Why did I not die at birth, come out from the womb and expire?” He goes on to elaborate on his line of thinking, wondering why life can seem so futile sometimes. Enter his 3 friends Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar, and their brand of “encouragement” does nothing but send Job further to the edge of despair. In Chapter 7, verse 16, he says, “I loathe my life; I would not live forever.” I think I’d be saying the same thing after his wife’s rebuke and friends like these. Yet in the midst of all this discouragement, Job still understands the character of our God. Chapter 13, verse 15 shows he still has hope: “Though He slay me, I will hope in Him; yet I will argue my ways to His face. face.” And on he goes to question out loud - where IS God in all this? Eventually, in Chapter 38, the Lord answers Job. God’s answers come in the form of many questions, all of which emphasize the power, might and glory of God Himself. What would you think if God asked you what He asks Job in verse 4, “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding”? I would think that would give all of us a perspective that we would need to get back into a right mind of knowing Who is actually in control! There has been a lot of suffering throughout many families in our church over the past few months. Suffering is exhausting, and in the midst of it we can tend to wonder why in the world we have to go through tough circumstances. We can be encouraged to know that just like Job, we can go to God through Jesus and be completely honest. Tell Him how you feel as honestly as you possibly can! He was big enough to take it from Job - and He certainly hasn’t changed. The Bible says He is the same yesterday, today and forever, and thankfully His mercies are new every morning. Run honestly to God with your problems. You’ll find He’s there with open arms to listen, comfort and sustain you through even your worst times. The timing of such things is rarely ideal, but for it to happen days before Christmas, for the visitation and funeral to take place out of town, and for so many of you to take the time and effort to be there was extremely meaningful to me. In addition, I cannot count the number of calls, e-mails, texts, and, yes in this day of technological dependence, the incredible number of sympathy cards my family has received in the last few weeks. On top of that, so many of you have stopped me in the halls of the church to express your sorrow, many with teary eyes from your own personal experience of such loss. I simply cannot express my appreciation in a way that I feel is adequate. Thank you for your care, your concern, and especially the many prayers you have lifted up to the Father on our behalf. They are priceless gifts. Others in our church body have also ex-perienced loss in the last few weeks, and as Marilyn Fleming told me the day after her husband Bill died, “I don’t know how people make it without their church fam family.” She’s right. And the answer is they don’t. At least not in the way our Lord provided. This is just one more reason to share the Gospel with lost people. God not only saves us from Hell that we deserve, He comforts us through His Spirit and His people until we are with Him in Heaven. Thank you, ERBC, for being tools in the hands of the Master as He fulfills His word in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (ESV). Please be in prayer for us! SO WHAT? Family Ministries Pastor Travis Cross Worship Arts Pastor Clay Smith As I write this newsletter I am preparing to go on a mission trip to the Philippines! I am so excited about this trip. Our team is made up of myself, Steve Rhea, Dick Stroup, and Marion Terry. We are going to serve/minister with Steve and Ahmie Deal. The plan is for us to help with some repair work at the children’s ranch that they run as well as to minister to some people and families who have been affected by recent typhoons. We leave on Thursday, February 5 and return on Saturday, February 14. Please be in prayer for us, the ministry, the Deal family, the people we will be ministering to, and our families while we are away from them. I cannot wait to see how the Lord will work during this trip! There are moments in life when you must just stop the mindless routine and ask yourself a very important question. Why am I doing what I’m doing? I am so thankful to be a part of such a missionminded church! Since being at ERBC I have been blessed to go to Brazil, Romania, Kenya, and now The Philippines! Each trip is special and the Lord has used each trip to teach me something new about Himself. I want to encourage you if at all possible to go on a mission trip at least once during your lifetime! I can guarantee you will never be the same! If we are not careful, life can become nothing more than a set of activities and tasks that only change depending on what day of the week it is. That is the very nature of a wasted life. And that is certainly not the life that the Lord intends us to live nor provides for us in His promise of abundant life. God offers you and me a life filled with meaning, purpose, direction, and significance. Unfortunately, stemming from the pressure of the culture around us, we too often get caught in the deception that the goal of life is to find our own significance, when the truth is that Jesus Himself is our significance realized. So what makes the difference? Is it our attitude? Our perseverance? Our keeping a proper perspective? A never-quit or give-up mantra? No. What makes the difference? The gospel does. The gospel changes everything. So when will Jesus, His Word, and His gospel be enough? Here are some important dates and deadlines coming up in Family Ministries: First Steps Class: Wednesday, February 18 (Deadline to register is February 17) Family Dedication Service: Sunday, March 1 (Deadline to register is February 23); Family Dedication Class for Parents will be Wednesday, February 25 Easter Egg Hunt: Saturday, March 28 VBS: Sunday, June 7 - Wednesday, June 10 (from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. nightly) Children’s Camp: Tuesday, July 21 - Friday, July 24 Camp McCall: Thursday, July 30 - Saturday, August 1 (Deadline to register and pay the total $150 is February 15) 5th Grade Boot Camp: Sunday, August 2 - Monday, August 3 The Worship Choir is working on a song that captures this truth so well. Here are the lyrics to the song: Please look over these dates carefully – especially deadlines coming up in February! Jesus changes everything; There is no greater mystery, That God would come to rescue me From who I was. The kindness of my Savior Calls me to the wonder of His love. Jesus changes everything and He is changing me. The Gospel Changes Everything The gospel changes everything; The turning point in history. Even now it’s changing me from who I was. The story of my Savior calls me to The wonder of the cross. The gospel changes everything And it is changing me. You saved my soul by Your blood. And I’m undone by Your great love. You made a way so I could come Just as I am to You, my God. I pray that the gospel is making a difference in how we live our lives and giving us an answer to the question, “Why am I doing what I’m doing?” firmly planted Student Ministries Pastor John Freeman Here is a great devotional from Experiencing God Day By Day entitled Firmly Planted. Read it and be challenged. God bless you, and if you haven’t heard it today, Jesus loves you! Psalm 1:1-3, Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. It is possible to spend your whole life knowing about the truths of God and never experiencing any of them. Simply knowing about the truths of God does not mean that they have become a part of your life. Here is the important question: What are you doing with the Word of God? Some people allow themselves to come under the influence of ungodly thinking to the point that God’s Word makes no difference to them. If you seek your counsel from ungodly persons, you will find yourself moving away from the direction God’s Word commands. If you intentionally seek out sinners as your companions, they will lead you down paths that take you far from God. If you choose to join those who are scornful, you will eventually become cynical. The righteous man does not find encouragement in the opinions of others but in God’s Word. He is not content with a surface knowledge of Scripture but meditates on it day and night until he is satisfied that what he reads reflects his own experience. He becomes like a fruit tree standing firmly on the bank of the river. The tree is well nourished and produces delicious fruit and bountiful leaves. People come from miles around to sit in its shade and eat its fruit. If you allow God to implement His Word in your life, others will draw encouragement from you. The more you grow in God’s righteousness, the stronger you will become. Some people would look in vain to find anyone they were encouraging, but not so the righteous person. A constant stream of people will seek you out because they know that your life will be a blessing. MISSIONS MINISTRY Missions, Evangelism and Outreach Pastor Eric Wooten As you read this I will be traveling back from Africa where Pastor Aaron and I have visited with missionaries including Taylor and Emma Nash. I can’t wait to let you know what all we did there. I want to let you know that we are planning to roll out The City, a new Internet portal solely for our church to communicate together in, next month. Be on the lookout in your Sunday School class on how to join your group. It’s going to be a great tool for us to stay in touch the other 6 days of the week. My prayer is that we don’t resist change but look at it as something that will be beneficial for communication here at ERBC. I also want to share with you a new way we are making contacts with those who have visited our church or accepted Christ through one of our ministries here at ERBC. If you would like to be part of this process, then we are asking you to put together a team of two or three people that you would like to make visits with. This could be your spouse, a friend that you hang out with a lot or a prayer partner. Come by the Library on Wednesday nights between 6:00 - 6:25 p.m. for me to give you a notebook and let you know how you can make the most of this great opportunity to reach out to our community. Please be sure to be in prayer for the mission teams that have planned trips in February: Philippines, February 5-14: Pastor Travis Cross, Steve Rhea, Dick Stroup and Marion Terry; Alaska, March 5-12: Pastor Eric Wooten, Kelsie Windsor, Hannah Bridger, John Partin, Seth Furman and Dale Winser. Thanks for continuing to support our basketball teams! We also are looking forward to ERBC Soccer coming up in March. Signup and practices are set for Tuesday, March 10 and Thursday, March 12. Games will be held March 14 and 21; April 11, 18, and 25; and May 2. The cost is $50 ($20 for returning players), and the league is for K4-6th grade players. SHINE! Groups meeting on Sunday and Wednesday evenings report times of real growth as we make a point to put Jesus first by meditating on Scripture, memorizing pertinent verses, staying accountable with each other, and striving to be the men we know He wants us to be. After the course we will spend 6 weeks walking through a DVD and book-driven study called Life On Mission. Pastor Aaron has said he wants us to be a “Life on Mission church.” Let’s make a strong move in that direction with the men of ERBC! The textbook and study guide will be $20. However, 100% of the royalties for the textbook go to supporting missionaries in North America through Send North America!
