Created Equal series highlights America’s struggle
W
atch segments of award-winning
films and engage in expert-led
discussions during the series in February that
examines America’s civil rights struggle.
unpaid labor system that lasted until World
War II.
The final program in the series will be
Feb. 27. The film, The Loving Story, uses
interviews and photos from Life magazine
to focus on Mildred and Richard Loving, an
interracial couple arrested in 1958. Verna
Williams of the University of Cincinnati will
lead the discussion. She will address how
this aspect of the civil rights movement still
resonates today.
Portions of four powerful and riveting
documentaries that reveal dramatic incidents
in the history of civil rights will be showcased
in three programs this month.
All programs in the Created Equal series will
be at 7 p.m. Fridays at the Newport Branch.
Registration is required.
Segments of the film Freedom Riders will be
shown during Brave Activists Challenging
Segregation on Feb. 6. An original freedom
rider, Betty Daniels Rosemond, and Christine
Anderson of Xavier University will discuss the
1961 bus rides that challenged segregation
and redefined America.
Auto renewal aims
to help avoid fines
A new service designed to help patrons
avoid overdue fines is now active.
Regular notification messages (text,
phone and email) will continue to alert
patrons when items are coming due.
But now, an automatic renewal feature
allows items to be renewed three days
before the due date. Automatic renewal
of items will occur unless someone has
placed a hold and requested the item,
or if the item has already been renewed
twice. The auto renewal will provide a
new due date based on the date when
the item was originally checked out.
Check accounts online or call the library
to verify when items are due.

Playhouse brings ‘Theory of Mind’
F
alling in love is never easy, but it’s
more complicated for Bill, a young man
who wants desperately to love someone
but struggles with the social skills needed
to achieve a rewarding relationship. The
play focuses on Bill’s first date with a young
woman who is unsure of her own reasons
for romance.
The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s popular
Off the Hill Series for families is performing
Theory of Mind, winner of the 2008 Macy’s
New Play Prize for Young Audiences. The play
is a sensitive and unsentimental portrait of
relationships — an honest and humorous
look at adolescent communication and
dating relationships.
Theory of Mind, for ages 11 and older, will be
performed at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the
Kelsey Torstveit as Hilo and Christopher
Michael Richardson as Bill peform in
Theory of Mind.

ore than 25 programs each week are
