MASTER`S MESSAGE - Forest City Masonic Lodge No. 388

MASTER’S MESSAGE
The following is our new
Worshipful Master’s
Installations speech.
“As iron sharpens iron, so
a friend sharpens a friend.”
- King Solomon
Brethren, ladies, friends
and distinguished guests.
It is my honor to speak to
you tonight from a podium
in the east.
Six years ago I began this journey. I became a master
mason at Forest City masonic lodge. Very shortly
after taking my third degree, my masonic father,
Worshipful Brother Franck Kakou, appointed me
to the marshals position. Over the next many years
I progressed to the position which I will assume
tonight.
This night is not about me though, it is not about my
plans, my appointments, my aspirations or me at all.
It is about Forest City lodge. An institution that has
withstood the test of time for 147 years. Nearly 125
years before the internet, 110 years before the first
personal computer, 102 years before man walked on
the moon, 36 years before an airplane first flew and
nine years before Alexander Graham Bell patented
the telephone. Forest City has in the past, and the
present, been a place for good men to come and
become better men, and it will continue to be so for
years to come.
To insure the continued thriving of this great
institution it is important to look in all directions,
past, present and future. Just the other day Worshipful
Brother Rothman and I pulled out minute books from
meetings in years 1966 to 1968. Many of the writings
of then master Ronald Wolfe along with his Senior
Warden, Morton S. Negin, are contained within this
very temple. The amount of knowledge contained
within these walls is truly incredible.
Right now this lodge boasts a very impressive amount
of 50 year masons such as brothers Jack Stewart, Sam
Kool, Burt Siebert and others, many masons of the
year, including brothers Dan Lash, Lenny Clark and
Michael Schwartz and others, and a very attentive
group of past masters that continue to be very helpful
by taking leadership roles throughout our ranks.
In the last year the names of brothers Ralph Jurecki
and Todd Francis have become part of our future.
These are some of our newest members. It is through
them that our knowledge base grows. These men
each bring their own life experiences to our midst.
With each new member we grow stronger.
There are a few other names that are very important
to the future of forest city lodge. Benjamin Meske.
These names may not sound as familiar to some of
you as others I have spoke of. That is because they are
the children of some of our members. These children
can be the future of the institution. They can be the
next Sam Kool, or Mort Negin or maybe even the
next Steven Coconaugher. I am sure with the quality
of parenting they will receive that they can go on to
achieve anything they desire. It is up to us this very
day to create a place that they wish to achieve their
goals together. A place where they can follow their
dad, like my Senior Warden, brother Daniel Cohen
has done. Our future lies well outside the confines of
these four walls. It lies in the growth of the seeds we
plant on this very day. Today we commit ourselves to
creating an environment that ensures our survival for
another 147 years.

FROM THE SECRETARY’S QUILL
Several bulletin articles ago I challenged you to
pick up the phone and call a Brother or loved
one that you may have lost contact with. The
challenge went unheeded, and upon checking no
one had received such a call, myself included.
Brethren it is not only the secretaries job to keep
members of the craft in the loop and feeling loved.
It is everybody’s job to promote the feeling of
Brotherly love and friendship. We have great
precepts to live our daily lives by. Therefore I
urge you to contact at least one person NOW and
tell them how much they mean to you.
In our fraternity, as in life, you only get out
what you put into it. So my question to you is
this how much are you getting out of life and
our fraternity? Is there anything you can do to
get more out of life? Our current Grand Master
Steven E. Cokonougher’s theme is “The Time
is Now!” This theme is one that speaks to the
heart of the matter. It is a theme that, if I were
Grand Master, I would have chosen. It represents
a challenge to safeguard our future and puts the
burden of it right back were it belongs, on us.
So how many good deserving men have you
shared the “craft” with? Recently I was at a
family reunion where people traveled great
lengths to attend. Instead of people catching up
on old times and displaying love and devotion,
the family members were on their smart phones
doing Facebook. Is this what we have come
to as a society? Maybe everyone should have
just stayed home and logged into Facebook. It
certainly would have been more efficient.
I close this article with the challenge “The Time
is NOW!”

LODGE VISITATIONS
MUSINGS FROM THE WEST
Soon, after the beginning of the new
year, starts the Inspection Season. This is a
good time for brethren to visit other lodges in
district, make new friends, and view degree
work with an eye to improving our own work.
Going through the line up, visitations proved
to be very valuable, because when I arrived at
the Senior Deacon’s place I knew the identity
of the many visitors I was required to present.
It is with great happiness
that I address our brethren
this January as the weather is
clear and cold. It is this time
of year when many of us
spend happy hours amongst
friends and family during the
holidays. It is also when we
have our Brotherhood Night,
quite possibly my favorite
night during the Masonic year. The Brotherhood
that it fosters is unparalleled. I would like to thank
all of those who volunteered and helped with this
event. The charity we provide is an attempt to
make those less fortunate aware that somebody
is out there looking out for their best interests. I
would also encourage any of you brethren who
happen to reside locally in the Cleveland area to
come and witness the stated meetings with the
new officers. We are all younger and trying to
learn our way. We need the strength and support
of those of you who have come before us to
ensure that we can steer the lodge in the direction
which best represents our membership at large.
Recently Worshipful Brother Don
Samuels and I had the occasion to visit
Harding-Concordia Lodge, to witness the
raising of a brother to the Sublime Degree
of Master Mason. As first time visitors to
this lodge, we were welcomed at the altar,
and presented with Forget-Me-Not lapel
pins. The Concordia part of this lodge was
German, in it’s origin, and the explanation
of the pin was given as follows. As early
as the year 1934, soon after Hitler’s rise to
power, it became apparent that Freemasonry
was in danger. The German Grand Lodge
realized the imminent problems facing them
and elected to wear a little blue flower, the
Forget-Me-Not, in lieu of the Square and
Compasses, as a mark of identity for Masons.
It was felt the new symbol would not attract
attention from the Nazis, who were in the
process of confiscating and appropriating
Masonic Lodges and property. Throughout
the entire Nazi era, this little blue flower
marked a brother and distinguished the lapels
of those who refused to allow the Light of
Masonry to be extinguished. Needless to
say, Worshipful Brother Don and I had a very
pleasant visitation experience.
Burt Siebert, P.M.
Happy Holidays and New Year to everyone and I
look forward to seeing you in lodge.
Thank you,
Brother Daniel N Cohen
Senior Warden
Happy
New Year!
BURT’S NIGHT
On December 3, 2014, about 200 masons and non-masons,
ladies and men, gathered at Forest City Lodge to pay tribute to
a man who personified the masonic ideal. Those in attendance
experienced an unparalleled event and witnessed the effects a
man living a true masonic life can have on his fellow travelers
along life’s path, whether they are masons or not.
This was Burt’s night. The theme of the night was “A
heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much
you are loved by others.” Judging from the crowd gathered
that evening and by anyone who ever met him, Burt Task’s
heart was as large as the universe. His heart will live on in
the many individuals he influenced and inspired to be better
and do better. People came forward that night and told Burt
how deeply he had touched their lives and Burt had a chance
to express his love to them. More than one person stated that
the first time they met Burt they knew immediately that they
had just made a friend for life. Burt had a true gift for turning
anyone he met into a friend and the gift of knowing how to be
a true friend. This writer has never witnessed such a powerful
instance of people coming together to express love with a
person while they are still with them. Than again, I have never
met anyone like Burt.
All of us, as we walk down our path in life, meet a few
fellow travelers along the way, who profoundly effect us
and we them. Burt had hundreds. This is rare and should
be celebrated. It should also be emulated. Another one of
Burt’s talents was as a master teacher. He taught not so much
through words but by being who he was. We come to Lodge,
participate in ceremonies, and memorize words in order to
glean some wisdom that will help us live a good life that
positively impacts our fellow human beings. Burt showed us
that wisdom in action. We are all better for knowing him. Lets
carry on this masonic wisdom in action out into the world so
that his legacy can live on.
