When it boils, reduce heat to a simmer and maintain over low heat, taste for salt and adjust as needed. In a large heavy saucepan over medium heat, heat oil or butter until melted. Add shallots, garlic and rice; sauté until the rice is well coated with oil or butter, about 3 minutes. Add the wine and sage and stir until it is absorbed. Add a ladleful of the simmering stock; wait until it is absorbed before adding another ladleful stirring gently and almost constantly. Fit two pie crusts into the bottom of two 9-inch pie dishes. Combine the veggies, turkey cubes, stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce in a bowl. Stir gently. Spoon half the mixture into each pie crust, then top each pie with another crust. Pinch and roll the top and bottom crusts together at the edge of each pie to seal, and cut several small slits into the top of the pies with a sharp knife to release steam. Bake in the preheated oven until the crusts are golden brown and the filling is bubbly, 30 to 35 minutes. The small North County San Diego tribe, beset by financial woes compounded by a failed casino operation, launched an Internet Bingo website in November 2014. Now both state and federal authorities have filed lawsuits saying the site is illegal. At a hearing in U.S. District Court, the California Attorney General’s Office argued that Santa Ysabel’s Desert Rose Bingo website violates the tribe’s gaming compact with the state that forbids gambling enterprises except on Indian land. The U.S. Attorney’s Office filed a separate lawsuit seeking a permanent injunction against the gambling website, contending it also violates the federal Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. At the heart of the dispute is how tribal Bingo web- sites should be classified under federal law. Woman Banned From Bingo KRQE News in New Mexico has reported that a 70-year-old woman was banned from her local Bingo hall, and that she’s been fighting to get back in ever since. The woman said she’s played Bingo at the hall since 1985. But in January 2013, a supervisor told her they’d received letters from people stating she’d been driving erratically in the parking lot. The woman denies the accusation, and claims she’s never been shown any evidence of wrongdoing. “I was hurt of course, and I’m still hurt, because I don’t think it’s right,” she said. Since the ban, she’s written letters in an attempt to get answers both to the club and to the Attorney General’s Office. A representative from the Attorney General’s Office responded, saying, “While we sympathize with your desire to play Bingo, we do not have any jurisdic- tion over this issue and are unable to force them to allow you on their premises.” The woman maintains the club never showed her proof she did anything wrong. The club told KRQE-News off-camera that there’s more to the story, but declined to elaborate. Bingo Scrutinized in Texas A legislative committee studying gaming in Texas has recommended studying whether some Bingo payouts are “excessive,” whether the state should benefit from a “Bingo prize fee” and whether Bingo operations should be under the Texas Lottery Commission, in case there is a conflict of interest with that commission overseeing the charitable game. Lawmakers also recommended that the legislature encourage local law enforcement to crack down more on illegal eight-liner “gambling operations” that could strip business away from charitable Bingo in Texas. Bingo Makes Comeback in Bingo-less Town After over a decade hiatus, Bingo has returned to Turlock, California, thanks to the Assyrian American Kids Foundation. Paradise Bingo, which celebrated its grand opening at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds on January 2, offers Bingo three days a week. Bingo returns after a 2003 city ordinance that capped Bingo prizes at $250 per game— which is half of the statewide cap of $500. The ordinance also capped the amount an organization may charge per ticket and banned “supplementary games” with instant winners, more commonly known as pull-tabs or scratcher-style lottery tickets. At the time, the Assyrian American Civic Club, which hosted Bingo games through 2003, decided Bingo was no longer profitable under the newly implemented ordinance. Since then, they have received constant calls for the return of the game. The Assyrian American Kids Foundation hopes the return of Bingo will be permanent. © NAPSA Managing Medications Prescription medications can improve your health. A problem, however, can be that the more drugs you’re prescribed, the more likely you are to forget to take them, according to a new national survey by Medco Health Solutions, Inc. The survey found that more than half of Americans aged 65 and older take at least five different prescription drugs regularly and one in four take between 10 and 19 pills each day. What’s more, 63 percent of seniors prescribed five or more medications forget to take them and nearly one in four neglect to fill their prescriptions on time. This can lead to complications and even hospitalizations. Here are some tips to help you manage your medications: Keep medications in a common place: Choose a location that makes your medications easy to spot. Keep medicines in their original containers and remember to keep them out of sight and reach of children. Alert yourself: Try setting an alarm or asking a family member or friend to call to remind you to take your medications. Many pharmacies offer e-mail refill reminders when you use their mail-order pharmacy. Keep a personal medication record: Writing down all the medicines you take—including over-thecounter drugs, vitamins and supplements—and sharing that list with your doctor or pharmacist can help reduce the risk of a harmful drug interaction. Include the dosage, how you take the medication and the condition it treats. When traveling, consider timezone changes: Ask your pharmacist about how to adjust your schedule so you can avoid missing doses. You can learn more about properly managing your medications by reading a free booklet called The Smart Guide to Managing Medications. Go to www.Medcomedicare.com and get an electronic version of the guide or send a postcard with your name and address to The Smart Guide to Managing Medications, P.O. No Problem! www.ohiobingobugle.com OHIO EDITION ON THE WEB @ www.ohiobingobugle.com Hearts and Petticoats Why was Cupid chosen to represent Valentine’s Day? The last thing on my mind when it comes to romance is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon. –Anonymous According to legend, Augustus Caesar took a day from February and added it to August, the month named after him. He supposedly wanted August to have 31 days to equal the 31 days in July—which was named after Julius Caesar. Thus, February has 28 days except when leap year makes it 29 which occurs in any year divisible by four. 2015 is not a leap year. Why divide by four? Well, it helps synchronize our calendar year with the solar year, the length of time it takes the earth to complete its orbit about the sun which is about 365 and 1/4 days. Have I bored you to tears yet? Hope not, because I have a few more February tidbits for you to ponder. Bingo... ...Still The Best Bang For Your Gaming Dollar! February 2015 First, it is a tradition in Ireland and Britain that women may propose marriage during February leap years. In 1288 Queen Margaret of Scotland decreed that fines would be levied if a marriage proposal was refused by any man. The fine was a pair of leather gloves, a single rose, and a kiss. In the 1600 leap years, women wore britches to propose. A few hundred years later the custom changed and women wore red petticoats, not britches. It’s a good thing I’m already married because if I could even find a petticoat in my closet, I’m fairly sure it wouldn’t be red. Second, Friday, February 6, is National Wear Red Day. This is in support of women’s heart health as heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the United States. This custom began in 2002 to remind women to be mindful of heart disease. If you own a red petticoat as mentioned above, this would be a good day to wear it. Third, February is Black History Month. This began in 1926 as Negro History Week but was changed to a month long celebration in 1976. February was picked in honor of Frederick Douglass and Abe Lincoln who were born this month. So, fellow Bingo players, how does this column relate to you? Well, for starters, I’m thinking that we should take every opportunity this month to wear red; although not necessarily red petticoats unless you plan to propose. We should wear red as a reminder that heart disease is the number one cause of death for both women and men in the United States and claims approximately 1 million lives annually. As for Black History Month, BINGO BUGLE PAGE 7 former President Gerald Ford said it well, “Seize the opportunity to honor the too often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” I’m on board with that. Lastly, not to forget Valentine’s Day, celebrate by telling the Bingo operators, callers, and workers how much you love them. Without them, there would be no games for us to love in return. And share the love with other players too. A warm hug, a cheery hello, a heartfelt congrats after a Bingo win goes a long way towards a rewarding evening of Bingo for everyone. Until next month may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. email me at [email protected] to share your thoughts. OHIO EDITION ON THE WEB @ www.ohiobingobugle.com The birth of a Bingo hall Recently I had the happy occasion of sitting down in a Bingo hall that was just hours away from opening its doors for the first time. It was at the Tropicana Laughlin Hotel and Casino. Now, I should point out to you, if you have not heard of Laughlin, it’s in Nevada…right across the beautiful Colorado River from Bullhead City, Arizona. It is an oasis in the area that is not that old. Decades ago, an enterprising young man named Don Laughlin, who already owned a casino in Las Vegas, saw the potential of the Bullhead City area. The construction of a major dam on the Colorado was turning the area into a tourist trap and Don Laughlin was determined to cash in. He purchased a small 8-room property on the Nevada side of the river. From that humble start, Lauglin— which eventually would bear the name of its “founder”—grew into a multi-hotel resort that is somewhat of a “Little Las Vegas.” There had been Bingo in Laughlin for some time, but recently the Tropicana there, under the direction of slots manager Ed Ailstock, decided to start from scratch and build a new, state-of-the-art Bingo hall. February 2015 Seeing the nearly finished room was very interesting. Wires still stuck from walls. The “tote” boards were not activated yet. There were boxes of Bingo sheets lying around. But, Ed assured me it would not be that many hours before the first number was to be called. If I went home with one big memory of the experience it was Ed’s promise that Bingo would be FUN there. I was frank in my own feelings about the dullness of Bingo in some places and how so many peo- ple, even when they win, don’t look excited. Ed assured me that that would not be the case. “We will even have daubers with glow-in-the-dark ink,” he told me. He talked about nights that would cater to a younger crowd. I’m not sure in this competitive world if Ed will be able to follow through on all of his plans, but I have never seen a Bingo hall “boss” who is so determined to put the fun back into Bingo. And, I should point out that Ed BINGO BUGLE PAGE 9 didn’t give me any freebies to write a good review, only a complimentary glass of soft drink. I even paid for my own motel room across the river. But, the trip was worth it; I got to see someone who is committed to doing something I wish all managers had the liberty to do…make Bingo fun again. I wish I could have stayed another day to go to the first session. Oh, well, there’s always next time. Speaking of next time: Just how slow can a caller get? PAGE 10 BINGO BUGLE THIS IS A TEST If you are a producer of any of the items I purchase when I shop for groceries and other household needs, this test is for you. It’s February 2015 easy and no one but you will ever know your score. Go ahead. Take the test, I dare you. 1) Your costs for the coffee you sell have gone up. You will: a) raise the price. b) substitute a coffee of lesser quality. c) use a can with a false bottom and hope the customer won’t notice. 2) You produce bathroom tissue and your costs go up. You will: a) raise the price. b) chop an inch off one end of each roll. c) produce a thinner quality of paper, fluff it up and call it a double roll and hope the customer won’t notice. Your costs to bake those little snack crackers have increased. You will: a) raise the price. b) knock off four crackers in each roll and bunch up the paper at each roll end. c) make each cracker smaller, label the box “reduced calories” and hope the customer won’t notice. Your chocolate candies have always cost a little extra and we know your costs stay right up there. You will: a) raise the price. b) put fewer candies in a bigger box with extra packing. c) make each piece smaller and hope the customer won’t notice. When your customers go to Bingo would you rather they told all their friends: a) your product costs a little more but it is worth the price. b) your deceitful practices have caused them to look at other brands. c) They found one they like. Think I’m kidding? Then how would you play these hands (assume you are playing 9/6 Jacks or Better). 1. 6h 7h 8h Jd Qd 2. 5h 7h 8h Jd Qd 3. 5h 7h 8h Jd Qc 4. 7s 9s Js Ah Kh 5. 8s 9s Js Ah Kh 6. 4h Jc 6h Kd 2h In hand #1, the three-card straight flush (6h 7h 8h) is consecutive. In hands number #2 and #3, the three-card flush contains one STRETCH Your Dollars... ...PLAY BINGO! February 2015 gap and no high card (5h 7h 8h). Hand #4 contains a three-card straight flush with two gaps and one high card (7s 9s Js), while hand #5 has one gap and one high card (8s 9s Js). Lastly, do you see the three-card straight flush in hand #6 (how many gaps and high cards does it contain)? The value of a three-card straight flush depends on the number of high cards and gaps that it contains. For example, without any high cards, a three-card straight flush that is consecutive (no gaps) has more value than one with one gap, and the latter has more valuable than one with two gaps. In addition, the presence of a high card in the three-card flush increases its value. Fortuitously, the positive value of a high card in a three-card straight flush will nearly eliminate the negative value of a gap. Thus the three-card straight flush 8s 9s Js (containing one gap and one high card) has nearly the same value as the three-card straight flush 6h 7h 8h (no gaps and no high cards). The following table classifies and ranks three-card straight flushes in value according to the number of high cards and gaps it contains. For example, the three-card straight flushes that have the highest value are those where the number of high cards is one greater than the number of gaps (e.g., 9h-Jh-Qh or 9h-10h-Jh). The next grouping BINGO BUGLE PAGE 11 contain an equal number of high cards and gaps (or none of each), and so forth down the column to the lowest value three-card straight flush (containing no high cards and two gaps). If you follow the strategy in the table below when playing Jacks or Better, you’ll never again misplay a hand containing a three-card straight flush and high cards. Among its February 2015 principal tourist attractions are Walt Disney World, SeaWorld Orlando, and Universal Orlando. The establishment of such megaamusement centers has resulted in thousands of well-priced hotel and motel lodgings in the Orlando area, and just as many restaurants, golf courses, and numerous other attractions great and small. Walt Disney World is Florida’s most popular family attraction and has been for many years. Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot Theme Park, and MGM Studios are just some of the highlights that have long entertained children and parents. There is enough to see and do to keep families occupied for days on end. Additions such as Downtown Disney cater to a more adult crowd, with shopping, restaurants, theaters, and music venues. Universal Studios offers an inside look at a major film studio as well as a range of attractions and entertainment. Rides, shows, and restaurants are all part of the experience. City Walk features dining, shopping, and entertainment day and night. Islands of Adventure offers theme areas with rides and eye catching sights. Blue Man Group performances are also a highlight. Wet ‘N Wild, one of Florida’s first water parks, contains enough fun and thrills to entertain people all day long. On site are a wave pool, water slides, chutes, raft rides and flumes. Highlights include The Surge, a six-story speed slide; and Bomb Bay, where riders are dropped in a capsule from a great height. For those looking for a little less adventure but just as much fun there’s Lazy River, where you can drift down a manmade river in an inner tube. The Orlando Science Center showcases several branches of science from mechanics to biology and applied technology. There are a variety of themed exhibitions. For the less adventurous there is a popular self-guided swamp walk, which is much nicer than it may initially sound. Of course, a region that offers this much fun is not going to stop with outdoor amusements. Opportunities to slip out for a little fun at the Bingo tables also abound. OHIO EDITION ON THE WEB @ www.ohiobingobugle.com Older Drivers n Car shopping tips Dear Savvy Senior, What resources can you recommend to seniors who are shopping for a car? My wife and I are relatively healthy 70-yearolds and are looking for a new seniorfriendly vehicle, but could use some help. Older Drivers Dear Older, For seniors who are in the market for a new or used car, the AAA (American Automobile Association) and the University of Florida’s Institute for Mobility, Activity and Participation has just updated an excellent resource called “Smart Features for Older Drivers” that can help you choose a vehicle that meets your needs as you age. Senior-Friendly Vehicles While the automotive industry doesn’t make vehicles specifically designed for senior citizens, they do make certain vehicles with features that can help accommodate the needs of older drivers. With that in mind, “Smart Features for Older Drivers” addresses the age-related physical changes – like diminished vision, arthritis, and range of motion loss – that can affect a senior’s driving ability and comfort behind the wheel, and outlines various vehicle features that help address those issues. Here’s what they recommend: Safety First The first priority is to identify vehicles FebruaryFEBRUARY 2015 with a proven safety record which you can research online at safercar.gov and iihs.org/ ratings. Also look for vehicles that have dynamic stability control, anti-lock brakes, adjustable head restraints, and side and dual-stage/threshold airbags that adjust the deployment force based on the severity of the crash. Your next step is to identify specific vehicle features that can help meet your physical needs. So depending on what ails you, here is what to look for. Hip and knee problems: For comfort, a better fit, and easier entry and exit, look for vehicles that have six-way adjustable power seats that move the seat forward and backward, up and down, and the seat-back forward and backward. Also look for low door thresholds and seat heights that don’t require too much bending or climbing to get into. The ideal seat height for seniors is between mid-thigh and lower buttocks when standing next to the vehicle. Leather or faux leather seats are also easier to slide in and out of than cloth seats. Stiff upper body: If you have difficulty looking over your shoulder to back up or merge into traffic, look for vehicles with a large rear window for better visibility, wide-angle mirrors which can minimize blind spots, back-up cameras, active parallel park assistance, and blind-spot warning systems that alert you to objects in the way. Also, for comfort and fit, consider vehicles that have a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, adjustable seatbelts, and heated seats with lumbar support. 2015 Arthritic hands: For easier use, fourdoor vehicles are recommended because redictors the doors are smaller, lighter and easier to open and close than two-door models. ucky ard orgripping ebruary And to help with painful and turning problems, look for keyless entry and a push-button ignition, a thicker steering wheel, power mirrors and seats, and a sliding channel gear selector. Diminished vision: Drivers with vision loss due to cataracts, glaucoma or some other condition will find vehicles with larger instrument panels and dashboard controls with contrasting text easier to see and manipulate. And those with sensitivity to glare will benefit from extendable sun visors, auto-dimming rearview mirror and glare reducing side mirrors. Need a boost? According to new research, some foods have the same effect on your body as taking a prescription mood-enhancing drug. Do you reach for food or caffeine during the day in an attempt to feel calm, find a jolt of energy or a moment of bliss? But above all else, do you just really crave a better mood? While good habits such as eating breakfast every morning and regular meals and snacks throughout the day form the cornerstone of an energized outlook, science is revealing the vital ways in which food impacts our mood. And it might surprise you that some of the best weapons to help cure crankiness and boost energy can February 2015 be found in your local grocery store. The following foods will help your mood in two ways. First, they deliver some key nutrients that help support brain chemistry to reduce the risk of depression and help improve the quality of your sleep. And they do something equally important: Powerful combinations of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants help you build up your energy and capacity to handle life from your body’s deepest levels (your cell’s metabolic and energy pathways). This is what we all should aim for, not the quick burst of stimulation from a sugar or caffeine fix that ultimately leaves you feeling cranky or tired. Make these feel-good foods a part of a new happiness and health routine. Dark Chocolate Not only is it delicious, dark chocolate is high in magnesium, a mineral that calms your muscles and reduces anxiety. It also contains tryptophan, which helps reduce symptoms of depression. Salmon and Walnuts Salmon and walnuts are packed with omega-3s, which help fight off depression and mood swings. Bonus: They also can help improve memory and focus. Spinach This leafy green is stocked with folic acid, a B vitamin that has been found to boost your mood. It’s also an antioxidant that works to protect your brain cells from free radicals, which can lead to low energy and mood swings. Chicken The white meat contains B-12, a vitamin that helps to keep you calm. Low B-12 levels can make you moody and tired. ON THE WEB @ www.ohiobingobugle.com Tofu Tofu helps muscles relax, causing a calming effect on your body. Avocado Contains serotonin, a feel-good neurotransmitter. It’s also really good for your skin, hair and nails. Greek Yogurt Not only is it a wonder-food, the probiotics in Greek yogurt help boost your mood and immune system. Green Tea It’s full of theanine, an antioxidant that acts as a calming agent. Berries Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries contain anthocyanidins and anthocyanins—nutrients that help reduce stress and depression. Chia and Flax Seeds They have about the same amount of protein per ounce, at 4.4 grams and 5.1 grams respectively. However, chia is one of just a few plant sources that is a complete protein, meaning that it contains all of the needed protein-forming amino acids. Both of these seeds are a great way to get more fiber in your diet, but chia has the edge: an ounce gives you 10.6 grams of fiber, or 42 percent of your recommended daily intake, versus 7.6 grams and 31 percent for flax. These seeds also provide different types of fiber. Chia is one of the richest sources of soluble fiber, the kind that takes longer to get through your digestive tract, which adds bulk and slows glucose absorption. The fiber in flax has been tied to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. In fact, research has shown an association between daily flax consumption and lower cholesterol. The attention to customer service stands out in the hotel, and it’s present in the poker room and in the approach to dealing with players. It’s one of the few casinos I’ve seen that consistently treats poker players like treasured customers— one of the reasons the Borgata has been able to retain (or increase) its tournament prize-pools while many are shrinking. Poker’s saturation has been great for spreading the game, but it can also spread the player pool thin. Yet year after year at the Borgata, I see new faces in the tournament. The only trouble with having so many unfamiliar players in a tournament is that it can be hard to discern how they play. I’m not one of those people who think they “do better against pros” (an absurd notion in a game where profits come from the mistakes of others), but I do believe that I have a better sense of what to expect from February 2015 professionals—that is, I have pretty well-established parameters for what they’re capable and incapable of. In many poker situations, I know that an opponent who’s a professional can’t have certain hands, because he knows better than to ever play them that way. This isn’t always the case with amateurs; sometimes I’m lost because I have no clue what to expect. At the WPT Borgata Poker Open in September, I was seated next to an unfamiliar player after the dinner break. We’d met briefly during the player party held during the break. I knew he wasn’t a professional player, but I had no idea how seriously he played. The table was new because my stack was new—I had bought in during dinner break after busting my first bullet right before we adjourned. I won a few small pots in the first orbit, then the player on my right raised to 1,200 in early position with blinds of 250-500. I was behind him with Ad Kc and reraised to 3,000. Everyone folded back to him, and he quickly made the call. The flop came Ac 6s 2s, and when he checked, I decided to check back. I’m not sure that was the best play, but I thought he might have been new to poker and more likely to fold pocket pairs on the ace-high flop than call many bets with them. I also thought it was possible he’d take my check for weakness, and make bluffs on the turn (and, hopefully, river) with a hand that was essentially drawing dead. After I checked, the turn brought the 8s. My opponent checked again, and I bet 4,500. He thought for a while, counted out his chips, then added 6,000 more and raised. BINGO BUGLE PAGE 23 I was stuck. I had checked the flop so that he’d put more chips in the pot. But I didn’t know if he could run a big bluff, or if he would only take big risks with a strong hand. I decided to call once and evaluate his river action, but I suspected I was wasting money. The river was the 10c, and after 20 or 30 seconds of what seemed like posturing, my opponent went all in for 18,000. I didn’t think too long before tossing my cards into the muck and saying “Nice hand” to my opponent. “Nice fold,” he said as he tabled as the As Qs. It feels better being right when I don’t waste the money to find out. Tony Dunst is a poker pro and host of Raw Deal on World Poker Tour telecasts. PAGE 24 BINGO BUGLE February 2015 go hall manager announced that Bingo could not continue and that she would issue credit vouchers to everyone for a future Bingo. About two thirds of the way through giving us our vouchers the power came back on. Most everyone was still in the building and many of us wanted to go back and finish the games. I definitely did because I was very close to Bingo on the current game. But the Bingo manager said no because the power could go out again and they had already started refunding people’s money. We all left and the power never did go out again so in fact we could have finished the games. My question is whether you think the Bingo boss did the right thing by closing the games or if she violated any regulations by failing to return to Bingo once the power returned. —TTM, via email Emergency situations n How are they handled Dear Aunt Bingo, We were in the middle of a game in the second session of Thursday night Bingo on a rainy night. I was one number away from winning on two cards when there were two bright flashes of lightning, a loud “crack!” and then all the power went out. Along with all the lights going off the Bingo machine went dead, too. Everybody waited for a while in the dark but the power didn’t come back on. The Bin- Are YOU A Sweepstakes Winner? Check out the current winners posted below! ===== Dear TTM, Regulations governing Bingo cover the actual operation of the games, not emergency situations that disrupt a Bingo session. A broken water pipe, a power outage, a broken furnace, an earthquake…any number of things can occur that would cause the games to cease. To the best of my knowledge, regulators leave it up to the people operating the games to determine how to handle the situation. In your case, I believe the Bingo manager did a superb job. She waited a period of time before determining that the power might remain out before announcing that the games were cancelled. She then offered everyone refunds so that they could play again in the future. When the power came back, I think she was wise to assume that it might go out again—especially if that is typical of power outages in your area. It also sounds like refund vouchers had already begun to be issued. What a mess it would have been to try and take back the vouchers and restart the games with no assurance that power couldn’t be lost again! Of course you were disappointed to be closing in on a Bingo when the lights went out. Many other players may have been in BINGO BUGLE FEBRUARY SWEEPSTAKES WINNERS! ON THE WEB @ www.ohiobingobugle.com OHIO EDITION the exact same situation. But when an act of God brings Bingo to a screeching halt, it’s probably wise to call it a night, pack up your Bingo bag and head for home. —Aunt Bingo Dear Aunt Bingo, It has been bitter cold for weeks and it takes every bit of personal strength I have to leave my nice warm home and go out into the cold and drive to Bingo. I seriously thought of skipping today, but one of my Bingo friends called to check and see if I was going. I told her I was on the fence, but she insisted she had a “really good feeling” that she was going to win big and wanted friends there with her when she did. She gets this feeling a lot and is always wrong! But she did get me excited about playing and I agreed to meet her at Bingo. And guess what—she was right about her winning feeling, but the winner was ME! I won two jackpots tonight for $1,650 total. And to think…I almost didn’t go because I didn’t want to get cold! —Marie, via email Dear Marie, Congratulations! I’ll bet your winnings will warm your soul for weeks to come! It just goes to show you that with any type of gaming, the bottom line is that you have to play to win and you have to show up to play. I actually play more Bingo in the winter than in the summer for two reasons: I have fewer activities in the winter which makes it easier to get out to Bingo more often, and the cold keeps people home so there is less competition for prize money. As your experience shows, braving the winter cold and snow can be quite financially rewarding! —Aunt Bingo Share your views! Write to Aunt Bingo c/o the Bingo Bugle, P.O. Marla, Kate and I planned a boot-shopping expedition to the city and oh, my, did we ever find the most wonderful boots. We had agreed beforehand that we would limit ourselves to two pairs each but that was very difficult. I no longer have room in my closet for any more shoes, so it was either abide by our decision or find a new place to keep them. Marla bought some great faux crocodile ones and Kate found thigh-highs, while I went with fashion boots. We had just carried our purchases to the car and were looking around for a place to have lunch when Kate spotted an inconspicuous doorway that promised a Bingo game at 1pm. We quickly grabbed lunch and went off to play our favorite game. It turned out to be pretty crowded but I like that as the big payouts are usually percentages of the intake. Our cards were lucky right from the start, Marla and I being on for the first game and although neither of us won, we felt good to be that close. Kate won the February 2015 third game and you would have thought she won a million dollars so happy was she. “That pays for one pair of boots,” she crowed. “Now I just have to fund the other pair.” I was delighted for her, too, although I really wanted a win for myself. Before long we noticed a lady had a puppy in her purse. He was cute as a button with his head sticking out curiously. Naturally, as soon as intermission arrived we went to talk with her. She let the puppy out and he went straight for Marla’s new boots, growling and charging. The lady said “No, no. Bad dog,” several times but it had no visible effect. She tried putting him back in her purse but he refused that also, and continued barking and charging Marla’s boots. We were all very embarrassed and the lady said maybe she would have to put him in the car until the end of the games. “Oh, I hate to have you do that,” said Marla bending down and trying to pet the excited little guy. “Maybe if we let him get a good closeup of the boots, he’ll calm down,” said the lady. So we let him sniff the boots but he wanted to do them real damage and kept trying to bite. The games were ready to start again and the lady dumped the puppy into her purse and closed the zipper most of the way. Muffled barking came from inside. We returned to our seats, ready for more action, which we got right away as I was on and more than ready to win. I didn’t win that game, however, and we went right on playing until the final blackout when Marla was on early and we had high hopes. The puppy seemed to sense our excitement and started barking inside the purse. When Marla won, the lady let the puppy out and he went right for the boots again. Marla danced around, kicking out to keep the puppy away while having her card verified. The lady quickly realized she had made a mistake and tried to corral the puppy but he was having none of it. All he wanted was to bite those boots. Marla got paid although it was difficult as she was dancing around, doing puppy avoidance steps. At last Kate scooped the puppy up and handed him back to the lady who unceremoniously dumped him in the purse. We took our winnings and our new boots home. By Guy Williams Bingo buddies n Making friends in a different state Hi Guy, I live in Illinois and am visiting family in Florida and decided it would be fun one night to go out for an evening of Bingo. I found a church Bingo online not far from the house that had games the same night my relatives had a business obligation, which made it easy for me to go on my own and not have them worry that they were “abandoning” me. I headed out early so I could grab a bite at a nearby diner we had been to that I really liked. I got a booth and ordered and was sitting waiting for my meal when I noticed a couple looking over my way. I shrugged it off, until the woman stopped at my booth as they were leaving. “Excuse me,” she asked. “Are you from Illinois?” I said I was, and the woman said she recognized me from Bingo. I was floored. She then said they were on their way to Bingo from the diner, and I laughed and said I was, too. We agreed to meet there and play Bingo together. After my dinner I headed to the church and met up with the couple that had saved me a seat. It turned out we knew a number of the same people back home, and we remarked on how crazy it was to finally meet in an entirely different state. We had a very pleasant night of Bingo together and exchanged numbers and agreed to do it again. I still cannot get over crossing paths with these people half a country away from where we all live. It really is a small world. —Karl B., Illinois/Florida, via email Hi Karl, That really is a great story. This is one of those stories you’ll be able to tell 20 times when you get home! —Guy Hi Guy, I read the letter in your column from the reader who was frustrated about arriving at Bingo and finding out that the prizes were lower because of low turnout. This has happened to us players too a few times in my area, but luckily it is rare. It is annoying, but it isn’t a big surprise because the games include this warning in their hall policy sheet, which they print out and have ready to hand out to players if you ask for it. The policy doesn’t cover Bingo regulations as much as it covers “social” things that have come up in the past or that people question the most—like reduced prize money, cancellations, player disputes and that sort of thing. The guy who wrote in should ask if the hall in question has a policy sheet like this. If they do, then it wasn’t false advertising, he was just not fully informed. —BB, Texas Hi BB, You make a good point that I should have included in my response. Hall policy handouts are extremely valuable in keeping players educated on the rules and regs in place where they play Bingo. A sign conspicuously posted with hall policies clearly stated is also a useful tool. The bottom line is that no Bingo hall wants its players to feel misled or unappreciated. A busy Bingo hall is a happy Bingo hall—with lots of games and maximum prizes for everyone! —Guy Hey guys! (And gals!) Write to: Guy’s Turn c/o The Bingo Bugle, P.O. OHIO EDITION ON THE WEB @ www.ohiobingobugle.com February 2015 Chemical Weapons he pictures of blistered skin T and the photocopies of the medical records make it clear: Service personnel in Iraq were exposed to chemical weapons— nerve agent Sarin or mustard blister gas. It wasn’t just one or two broken and leaking canisters that were uncovered. Photos show dozens, even hundreds, of canisters in multiple caches. Depending on which version of the story you read, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel either did or didn’t recently order medical examinations of those soldiers who’d been exposed to those chemical-warfare agents. He asked that the medical treatment they received be examined. A Department of Veterans Affairs press release dated 2000 says that a former acting VA secretary had been “helping secure expanded benefits for veterans who were prisoners of war, or who were exposed to Agent Orange, radiation or mustard gas.” A 2005 press release says that the VA “announced a national outreach campaign to locate veterans who were exposed to mustard gas,” but goes on to say that “most of these veterans participated in chemical testing programs during World War II.” Nothing about what was being found in Iraq. Somewhere between 2000 and 2005, troops in Iraq unearthed caches of chemicals—and were injured. As late as 2008, soldiers reported contact with the chemicals. Some were denied decontamination. Some were accused of malingering. A few were given ineffective creams. A few were hustled out for care; most weren’t. Some veterans who handled those canisters still have symptoms that were not taken care of at the time, especially breathing problems. If you were there, make an appointment to be checked out. Howard Browning and Lynn Anne Poirier began living together in 1991 and, according to Browning, entered an oral agreement in 1993 that they would split any lottery winnings. In 2007, Poirier bought a lottery ticket with a $1 million prize, leading to a legal fight about whether she was required to share it with Browning. Court documents indicate the two sides also dispute whether a romantic relationship continued at the time Poirier bought the ticket. A Seminole County judge sided with Poirier, and the 5th District Court of Appeal also ruled partly in her favor, but has asked the Supreme Court to take up the case. The legal question involves what is known as the “statute of frauds,” which generally bars lawsuits about agreements that take more than a year to carry out unless those agreements are in writing. Scratch-offs Mean Millions for Two New Yorkers A scratch-off game called Franklin’s Fortune created instant fortunes for two men in New York State. Phillip Alger, 25, of Buffalo, and John Fisher, 21, of Lima, each won $3 million in the game. Alger, a history buff who said he isn’t a frequent lottery player, decided to take a chance after seeing Benjamin Franklin on a $10 ticket. He bought two of them at a convenience store and scratched them when he got home. “I scratched the first one and didn’t win,” he said at a New York Lottery press conference. “I was upset that I wasted my money. Then I scratched the second one and saw it was a jackpot winner. I was in disbelief.” Alger, who supports five children, said he plans to pay bills, set up college funds, get a new car and talk to a financial adviser about investing in a franchise. Fisher, who likes to buy tickets for the fun of it, said: “Winning the lottery feels like all my problems are gone. I can set my daughter up for life.” The onetime, lumpsum payout on those winning tickets is $2.25 million, or a little more than $1.48 million ANIMAL CRACKERS By Fred Wagner after taxes. Texas Lawmakers Give Thumbs Up to Lotto Lawmakers studying whether it’s time for the state to cash out on the Texas Lottery reported that they oppose ending the game because that would devastate funding for public education and could spark higher taxes for nearly all Texans. At the same time, a legislative committee studying the issue said lottery officials should study where the tickets are being sold as well as how advertising dollars are being used—and that the state should stop promoting the games in print media. “The committee recommends the Legislature continue the Texas Lottery and the Texas Lottery Commission,” according to the report. “It is the committee’s opinion that the loss of state funding for education and other valuable programs, as well as the loss to Texas businesses, would be highly detrimental to the state.” This comes as lottery sales ended the year at a record-breaking pace in Texas, generating $4.38 billion in sales—$1.2 billion of which went to public education and veterans programs. Lottery Tickets Not for Kids The Minnesota State Lottery and other state lotteries are advising against gifting lottery tickets to minors as birthday or other special event gifts. Lottery tickets can be a popular last minute gifts during birthdays and holidays. However, the State Lottery said when given to anyone under 18, research shows it can set them up to develop gambling problems later in life. A study by the Yale School of Medicine finds that children who received lottery tickets as gifts tend to begin gambling earlier in life.
