Guinness World Record Holders for the World’s Largest Samba Band! On Monday, all 105 children from Year 3 joined up with 1,675 children, aged 7 to 16, from 27 London schools to take over the iconic Royal Albert Hall to bang the drum for street children’s rights and smash the official World Record for the World’s Largest Samba Band! The children have been learning to play the samba drum all term and were really excited to have the opportunity to showcase their talents at a world famous venue such as the Royal Albert Hall. The Guinness World Record attempt required 30 adjudicators to ensure all Guinness World Record rules were adhered to. The announcement was made to the children shortly after the World Record attempt. The attempt smashed the previous World Record, which was set by 1,038 people in São Paolo, Brazil in 2001!!! The performance marked the UK launch of the second Street Child World Cup (SCWC) that kicks off in three weeks in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Up to 250 street-connected boys and girls from 19 countries on five continents will come together to play football and challenge the negative perceptions and treatment of street children everywhere. Running parallel to the world famous Rio Carnival, our samba-drumming Year 3 children helped turn the Royal Albert Hall into a cauldron of vibrant colour and sound as they revelled in the carnival atmosphere. Hosted by former BBC presenter Andy Akinwolere and Sky Sports News’ Hayley McQueen, the event featured an exclusive performance of the official SCWC anthem, “I Am Somebody” by Hospital Records artists London Elektricity, Diane Charlemagne and S.P.Y. We are very grateful to the Sutton Music Service for helping to give our Year 3 children the opportunity to be part of this groundbreaking event and also for the expert tuition provided by world-music teachers from Inspire-works in our Year 3 music lessons this term. All of Year 3 were delighted to support the Street Child World Cup by taking part in the World’s Largest Samba Band at the Royal Albert Hall and the teachers have enjoyed using music as a platform to inform as many people as possible about the vision and aims of Street Child World Cup. It was incredible for our children to unite with almost 1,700 other London school children and we are sure that the memory of becoming Guinness World Record Holders will be something they will remember for ever! The Governors and Staff were delighted that 99% of parents would recommend Cheam Park Farm Junior to another parent. We were also pleased that over 90% of parents also agreed with each question. The results of what percentage of parents agreed with each statement is printed below and we will use these outcomes when planning our school development priorities for the coming year. Thank you to all parents who did return a paper questionnaire this year. No parents chose to complete the online questionnaire. Your help and support was much appreciated. Mrs Young is currently looking into this area and parents will be receiving half termly progress reports with their child’s current levels from next term. b) Homework was raised as an issue by eight per cent of parents in Year 4 and 5. Parents requested more homework for their children and some felt the homework should also be more challenging. Our Year Leaders for Year 4 (Miss Shaw) and Year 5 (Mrs Bishop) will be looking at homework and making adjustments as necessary. If in a few weeks, you still feel we could address this issue any better, please contact Miss Shaw or Mrs Bishop directly. c) One parent asked if the school would consider revising its school holiday dates in light of new legislation and a recent debate on the subject in Parliament. This is something we would need to consider in conjunction with CPFI and other local schools. The governing body will discuss the issue and feedback to parents at a later date. d) One parent raised the question of electronic newsletters. Last year a specific question was asked of parents on this subject and only 31% of respondents requested electronic newsletters. As a result, the newsletter is still sent out on paper each week. e) Finally, one parent felt behaviour at the school was not well managed and four parents expressed concern that bullying is not dealt with effectively. In a recent Quality Assurance Review of the school in January, four external inspectors found behaviour in the school to be outstanding. Any incident of bullying is taken very seriously and all incidents are thoroughly investigated. If these four parents would like to discuss their concerns further please see Mrs Young, Mr Colman or Mr Hedger for an appointment via school office. 100% New Sports Achievement Award Monthly Winners – February 2014 Congratulations to our next two winners of our monthly Sports Achievement Award – Charlotte Cotter & Liam Wolstenholme. The awards are in recognition of the achievements of one boy and one girl who have really excelled in PE and Games lessons or in an inter-school sports fixture against another school, displaying great sportsmanship in the process. The awards were presented to Liam and Charlotte for outstanding performances for Hi 5 Netball team in February. Both Charlotte and Liam have had their names added to the Roll of Honour Board on our Achievement Zone shelves outside the school hall and on the MLE Celebration Room. Congratulations! Look out at the end of term for details of March’s winners. Please remember that children are not allowed to wear nail varnish or make up to school for any reason. Children should also not wear boots instead of shoes as part of their regular school uniform. Mr Parmenter reports on another excellent day for our sports teams, as the school won our fifth trophy of an already incredibly successful 2014 …. On Monday 24th February our Year 5&6 Hi 5 Netball team went to Greenshaw High School to represent the school at the Borough Stage of this year’s School Games Championships. Our team was: Lucy Sturton (c), Liam Wolstenholme (c), Amber Hendra, Charlotte Cotter, Amelia Cornwell, Sonny Salvatore and Sam Branch. All of the children had trained extremely hard up to the event, even beating our Year 6 Girl's Netball team in a friendly! The tournament followed a round robin format seeing all 7 teams play each other once, with the league winners going through to the London School Games Finals. Our first match was against Beddington Park Primary who we beat 6 - 0. After a great start we played Westbourne B who we beat 4 - 0. Still unbeaten and with a clean sheet we played Cheam Fields and won 5 - 0. Our fourth game was against Barrow Hedges and we won 5 - 0. With two games to go we faced our two hardest games. Game five was against Nonsuch. The team had to work hard and dig in deep and we managed to win 2 - 0. Still with a clean sheet and playing some great netball we faced Westbourne A in our last game. Knowing if we won this game we would be overall winners and go through to the School Games London finals, the children went out full of confidence. The game finished 3 - 0 to Cheam Park Farm and we were announced overall winners. The team worked so hard and adapted to the new sport really well. Well done to the whole team who now go through to the London Finals of the School Games at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. Tag Rugby Coaching for Year 3 with Harlequins RFC As part of their weekly Games lesson, Year 3 will be receiving free coaching from fully qualified rugby coaches from our local Premiership Rugby Union team Harlequins. The children are excited to be receiving the coaching and have already had two really fun sessions with Harlequins. Year 3 will be working on passing, tackling, travelling with the ball and creating opportunities to score a try. At the end of the six weeks of coaching, a number of children will go on to form our Year 3 Tag Rugby team for this year and have a tournament in April at Sutton & Epsom RFC to look forward to. Harlequins are also coaching our Y5&6 Tag Rugby team this half term during their after school club sessions and they also have a tournament to look forward to in April. In assemblies, and through our Circle Time & PSHE lessons, we discuss each theme and remind the children of the importance of respecting each other and the world around them.
