We have had a few changes in staff here in the South. Anna Young (regional manager) went on maternity leave in September and Kat Valk has joined the team as Regional Manager during Anna’s
maternity. There have been some new netball development officer appointments since August.
Lois Rideout joined the team in August as Berkshire NDO. Carey McCormick has taken over as NDO
for Hampshire & IOW. Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire NDO positions are currently vacant so
any urgent queries should be directed to the regional office.
A full round up of the current team is at the back of this issue with some photos to help you out a
bit with faces!
Massive Congratulations to Anna and Matt Young on the birth of their daughter
‘Charlotte Eve Young’ . Charlotte arrived on the 10th October, bang on due date
at 10.32am weighing a healthy 8lb 11oz.
County Rounds of
National Schools
The county rounds of National schools are now well under way with
Hampshire and Berkshire both starting theirs early in October.
Hampshire Schools Netball Association
National schools competitions saw 22 teams compete on Thursday 22 nd September in the U16
section. We saw a fantastic standard of netball at the sports centre in Southampton with our highest number of entries to date. We look forward to the U14 and U19 competitions later this month.
Good luck to our representative Portsmouth Grammar School and Thornden School will be representing Hampshire in the next round.
Berkshire Netball's National Schools Netball Tournament
Fourteen schools from across the county competed for a place at the Regional round. There were
some strong performances in the initial rounds across all three age groups –U14, U16 and U19.
In the U14s category, Queen Anne's (Reading),
St Mary's (Ascot), Charters School
(Sunningdale) and Wellington College
(Crowthorne) all progressed through to the semi
-finals following the group stages. Queen Anne's
came out on top in their match against Charters,
meaning they set up a final against Wellington
College, who beat St Mary's in their semi-final.
Wellington College took on Queen Anne’s in the
U14 final and won 9-6.
In the U16s category, The Abbey
School (Reading) took an early lead to
beat Charters (Sunningdale), 18-0, in
the first semi-final. The other semi-final
was a much closer affair, with Windsor
Girls School (Windsor) and Downe
House (Thatcham) fighting hard until the
end. But Windsor managed to pull to
take the other place in the final. The Abbey School and Windsor Girls School
fought hard in the final, but the score
was 23-6 to The Abbey School when
the final whistle went.
In the U19s category, the first semi-final was
contested between Wellington College and St
Marys, with Wellington College coming out on
top, earning their place in the final. In the second semi-final, Reading Blue Coat School
(Reading) beat Charters. In the U19s final,
Reading Blue Coat School and Wellington College were on level terms for much of the game,
with the scores level at 4-all at half time, but it
was Reading Blue Coat School who were able
to turn over a decisive centre pass to win the
game 9-7.
Good luck to the winners and runners-up going on to represent Berkshire at the Regional round.
Club Feature
Didcot Netball Club
Seven over 35 year old ladies rekindled their netball passion following a summer Back to Netball Tournament. Word travelled around and within a few weeks there was a list of 15 ladies
wanting to play. Didcot Netball Club began its journey.
The impact on the community has been immense. We were able to give an opportunity to all
woman of all ages and abilities. Two of our ladies volunteered themselves to go on a coaching
course - To which they successfully passed their level 1 and Level 2 in short space of time.
The club went on to offer young girls within Didcot the opportunity to play netball. We ran taster
sessions in primary schools and from that Didcot Juniors began. We have managed to sustain
the interest and level of commitment and now have 4 teams in the junior league and three
teams in the senior league. We are delighted to have been awarded the Bronze CAPS award
by England Netball and are proud that we have in total 70 members all enjoying a game of netball whether it is for fun, keeping fit or competitively.
Congratulations to the 3 new Bronze CAPS clubs in the South:
Didcot Netball Club—Oxfordshire
Marlow Netball Club—South Bucks
Purbrook Netball Club—Hampshire
Following completion of their folders and a successful assessment in September, they
were awarded their Bronze CAPS. This prestigious accreditation is only given to clubs
who can demonstrate that they are offering a good quality netball provision within their
community.

Back To Netball—Maidenhead
Cox Green School, Maidenhead is the place to be on a Thursday evening from 7pm until 8pm for
exercise, fun and lots of laughter. Ladies of all ages meet here to play and be coached for netball. New players, returning players and players with teams wishing to practice are all welcome.
The evening is run by Gina Macgregor and is assisted by Brenda Fallowfield.
“We currently have 3 teams in the Maidenhead netball league, all made up from the Cox Green
‘back to netball’ girls. We also have several teams with players who have moved into different
teams but came via the ‘back to netball’. Some of our girls who are in the league still come on a
Thursday as they just enjoy the evening.
We are currently looking for our next lot of ladies that would love to join us and have fun, simply
to turn up and play on a Thursday.”
We recently had a ‘back to netball’ BBQ at Gina’s house and about 30 girls turned up and a brilliant evening was had by all, as you can see from the picture.
So come along and join in the fun.
