Deacon’s Corner
Everybody loves to get some attention. We enjoy
getting recognition for the good things we do in our
lives. Some people need to be recognized for their accomplishments more then others. For some, personal
gratification is enough for others the more fuss made
over them the better they feel. If some people don’t receive the recognition they were expecting they will
quickly remind all those around them of their accomplishments.
In our Gospel Simon says to Jesus, “Everyone is
looking for you.” Jesus had been working very hard
healing many people and driving out demons. All who
encounter him adore him.
Jesus fame was quickly spreading he was quickly
becoming a real rock star overnight. Nonetheless, Jesus chooses to move on to other villages. Personal idolization is not the purpose for which He has come. His
ministry is not about drawing attention to himself, but
about preaching the Good News of salvation. Yet, His
ministry is about himself, for He is the Good News of
salvation. His ministry is about reaching out to others and easing their burdens of life. So He cures those
who are brought to Him who are “ill or possessed by
demons.” But, his saving ministry is more than this.
Jesus never looses sight of why he came. He came
to preach the Good News of salvation. His ministry
is about helping others move beyond their immediate
life concerns and reach for the life he offers them.
We need to allow Jesus’ Presence to transform us so
that our every breath is a proclamation of God’s Good
News. Most of us won’t go out to our neighbors to
preach. But we can smile and say a simple thank you to
someone we meet during the day. We can bite our
tongue rather than snap back at someone who may
have annoyed us. We can do something thoughtful for
someone when it is not expected. Like Jesus, we can
live the Gospel, the Good News in action. We are the
Good News when we like Jesus take time in prayer to
encounter him, grow in our live for Him, draw strength
from Him.
God bless! Deacon John

(215) 884-3252 if you wish to arrange for an Announced
Mass.
MARRIAGE CONVALIDATIONS
For Catholics a valid sacramental marriage is before a Priest
and two witnesses in what is called the Forms of Marriage.
If you have been married by a Justice of the Peace or in a
Civil Marriage and wish to have your marriage blessed by
the Church and be able to return to the sacraments, most
especially, the Sacrament of the Eucharist, please call the
Rectory at 215-884-3252 and ask to speak to Fr. Murray.
Fast and Abstinence
And Other Acts of Penance for Lent
The Bishops of the United States prescribed, as minimal
obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and
older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, February 18th, 2015, on all Fridays of Lent and Good
Friday. Further, all persons eighteen year of age and older, up
to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on
Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to
be light.
All faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at
Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of Sacred scriptures, and to participate in parish Lente devotions as well as educational programs. Adoration of the Blessed sacrament is especially recommended.
All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which
has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese
as well as throughout our nation and our world.

PHILADELPHIA 2015
TWO BECOME ONE
We are not made to be alone. Human
beings need and complete each other.
Friendship and community satisfy that
longing with bonds of common interest
and love. Marriage is a uniquely intimate
form of friendship that calls a man and a
women to love each other in the manner
of God’s covenant. Marriage is a Sacrament. Married
love is fruitful and offered without reservation. This
love is in the image of Jesus’ faithfulness to the
Church.
.
Chapter 4: Two Become One
Our First three chapters reviewed basic Christian faith.
We saw how confidence in Jesus opens the door to faith,
enable us to know God and what God has done in
history. God creates male and female in his image, and
makes covenant with Israel and the Church. God is
faithful to his promises, even when we sin. Because God
loved us in this way, we spend our lives trying to return
our love to God and share it with our neighbor.
In this month’s chapter and in the chapters to come, we
will study the implications of these doctrines for marriage
and the family. When husband and wife promise to love
each other as God loves us all, they mae a commitment
to love not only romantically, but also with mercy and
forgiveness. Our culture sometimes teaches us to think
of marriage as a negotiable contract between two
individuals who happen to feel sexual chemistry. The
view of love is a recipe for instability, since it is still
premised on individualism and the waxing and waning
of romantic feelings. The Church's alternative account
of love enables us to transcend the culture of individual
ism and become who we were created to be. Founded
in Christ, sustained in the sacrament's, Catholic
marriage builds humility and self-sacrifice into the
dynamic between male and female. As this month’s
chapter explains in more detail, sacramental marriage
creates intimate communion even in times of suffering
and hardship. “Love is our mission,” as our catechism’s
title declares, because Christ’s love frees us from false,
shrunken accounts of love and makes us fully alive.

Action AlertSupport for Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36)
In a January 20th letter to congress, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., Chairman of the United States Bishop’s Committee
on Pro-Life Activities, urged support for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36). He cited that the 2013 conviction of Philadelphia’s Dr. Kermit Gosnell for crimes committed while providing abortions has. “ Lead many Americans to realize
that our permissive laws and attitudes have allowed the abortion industry to undertake these procedures.”
He added that, “these procedures after the middle point of pregnancy also pose serious dangers to women—evidence by D.
Gosnell’s own manslaughter conviction for one women’s death, and news about the death or serious complications of other women
undergoing such procedures.”
Cardinal O’Malley urged Congress to support the common-sense reform offered H.R. 36 and to oppose all weakening
amendments. Please show your support for H.R. 36 by contacting your U.S. Representative, Madeleine Dean.
