Dear parishioners,
Next Sunday, February 15, will be “kickoff Sunday” for the diocese’s Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). (From 2000 to
2013, it was called the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.) The ACA supports the pastoral activities of the Church of Trenton, which is one
of more than 3,000 local Churches (dioceses) that comprise the universal Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. I made a personal
pledge for last year’s appeal and will do so again this year. I ask that you please consider joining me in making a pledge, in whatever amount you can afford, even if it’s only five or ten dollars. Your participation will show Bishop O’Connell – the chief shepherd
of the Church of Trenton -- that you support his efforts to minister to the various needs of the people (Catholic and non-Catholic) in
the four counties of our diocese.
Last Sunday, I received an e-mail from a parishioner which said: “Dear Father Chang: Regarding your Pastor’s Message,
less trivia, fewer parentheses and a more spiritual message would be appreciated.” As I have said before, the Church does not mandate a pastor’s message in the weekly parish bulletin and therefore most parishes do not have a weekly pastor’s message in their
bulletin. The purpose of the parish bulletin is to share information with the parishioners about liturgical and non-liturgical activities
in the parish. (Some parishes have a four- or six-page bulletin. Our parish has a twelve-page bulletin, the cost of which is completely covered by the ad payments that the bulletin vendor receives from the businesses that generously advertise in our bulletin.) Some
pastors do choose to add a pastor’s message, even though it is not required. As pastor, I enjoy taking the time to write a weekly
message, because I want to share additional information with you (even though I am not required to) -- about your parish, your diocese, the universal Church, and secular matters. As you can see, I do like trivia and I also love history. If you do not like trivia or
the other contents of my weekly message, you are not required to read it. You can choose to skip page 3 and read only page 2 and
pages 4 through 10 (plus the ads on pages 11 and 12). If you are looking for a weekly spiritual message (in addition to the homily at
Mass), there are Catholic websites that will send you a weekly (or daily) spiritual message via e-mail. One such website is AmericanCatholic.org, which has various e-newsletters they can send you (for free), including “Minute Meditations” (daily) and “Saint of
the Day” (daily). The website is operated by the Province of St. John the Baptist (headquartered in Cincinnati) of the Order of Friars
Minor (O.F.M. Franciscans). That province is the publisher of St. Anthony Messenger magazine.
A parishioner asked me if we will be sending a parish bus to the papal Mass in Philadelphia in September. I explained
to them that Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., has probably received requests for blocks of tickets to the
Mass from each of his fellow diocesan bishops of the other seven Latin Catholic dioceses and the two Eastern Catholic dioceses in
Pennsylvania (3,244,000 Catholics; 25% of the total population; as of August 2013), as well as those of the bordering states of Delaware (one diocese [including nine Maryland counties]; 240,000 Catholics; 18%), New Jersey (five Latin Catholic and two Eastern
Catholic dioceses; 3,761,000 Catholics; 42%), New York (eight Latin Catholic and two Eastern Catholic dioceses, plus an Eastern
Catholic exarchate; 7,111,000 Catholics; 35%), Ohio (six Latin Catholic and three Eastern Catholic dioceses; 1,964,000 Catholics;
17%), and Maryland (one diocese [consisting of only nine of the state’s 23 counties, plus the City of Baltimore]; 485,000 Catholics;
15%), plus the Archdiocese of Washington (District of Columbia and five Maryland counties; 630,000 Catholics; 22%). The combined Catholic population of the said thirty Latin Catholic dioceses is 17.4 million (out of a total population of 60.4 million). Even
though there will be a finite number of tickets for the papal Mass, many Catholics without tickets will still attend, just like the six or
seven million Catholics who went to the recent papal Mass in Manila (in the Philippines). In the January 25 bulletin (on page 9), our
youth minister stated that our parish’s LifeTeen youth group will begin raising funds for a possible trip to the papal Mass.
Today is World Marriage Day. Sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, the day “honors husband and wife as the
foundation of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life.”
This Wednesday, February 11, is the optional Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes and the 23rd annual World Day of the
Sick. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for our sick relatives, friends, and fellow parishioners, and for us.

CONFESSIONS: The will be no confessions on Tuesday, February 17
(Mardi Gras celebration) and Wednesday, February 18 (Ash Wednesday). Please also note that confessions during Fridays of Lent will
start at approximately 8:15 pm, i.e, after the completion of the Stations
of the Cross.
MARDI GRAS
On Tuesday, February 17, the Christmas Carol Festival committee
will be hosting a Mardi Gras celebration. It will immediately follow the
7:00 pm Mass, in the All Purpose Room beneath St. Raphael Church.
Come and enjoy various desserts, music, and dancing before the start
of the Lenten season.
MASS DURING SNOWSTORMS
Our parish does not cancel Mass during a snowstorm, because the
priests’ residence (in the rectory, along with the parish office) is near
the church and a priest is able to walk through the snow to the church.
Many parishes follow the same policy. Some parishes do cancel Mass
due to snow or ice, but usually the priest’s residence in those parishes
is in a separate building that is not near the church (and therefore it
might be dangerous for the priest to attempt to drive to church). For the
same reason, it is not a sin if you miss Mass (on a Sunday or holy day
of obligation) when it is too dangerous to drive (e.g., snow or ice)--or
when you are sick (in which case your fellow parishioners would prefer
you stay home, so as to not share your germs…).
From Monday, December 1, through Sunday, April 5— Holy Communion is being distributed under only one species (the Sacred
Host) instead of both species (the Sacred Host and the Precious
Blood), because of the flu season. Under the principle of concomitance, we receive all of Jesus—Body, Blood, soul, and divinity, whole
and entire—under either species. Thus, we do not have to receive both
species at Communion.
HOLY NAME SOCIETY
The monthly meeting of the Holy Name Society will be held on
Wednesday, February 11, after the 7:00 pm Mass, in the parish center. There will be light refreshments afterward.

LENTEN RETREAT with POPE FRANCIS
This Lent, come and spend a few hours, reflecting on the life and

Our parish community is hosting this special retreat, led by Fr. Anthony Ciorra (via DVD), which will be divided into three parts, each on a
Saturday morning. Each morning we will cover two different topics and
allow time for prayer, scripture and reflection.

18th ANNUAL CATHOLIC MEN for JESUS CHRIST
MEN’S CONFERENCE
Join other Catholic men from across the Diocese of Trenton at the
18th Annual Catholic Men for Jesus Christ Men’s Conference on Saturday, February 28, at Saint Gregory the Great Parish, Hamilton.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Dare to Be a Disciple.” The
day runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (doors open at 8:00 am for bagels
and coffee) and will feature Holy Mass and inspiring talks by: Jose
Romero, Catholic author, radio host, and evangelist; Mike Piazza,
former major league baseball all-star catcher; and a blockbuster
speaker, who can not be announced in advanced, but is someone you
will not want to miss! There will also be Catholic vendors, and the
opportunity to interact with other men who are looking to grow in their
Catholic faith. A youth breakout session will also be offered for young
men from 8th grade to college age.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP

TECH
Kindergarten students recently learned how to create parabolic curves, using straight lines
in Microsoft's paint program. The lesson reinforced skills such as, logging on to Windows 8
Professional Touch Screen computers, launching the start button, and searching for the
“paint program.” After logon>start>paint, which the students opened, then the teacher provided the students with the templates for drawing the curve. After connecting the dots
properly, a curvy checker flag appears. The students then used the “paint bucket” tool to
complete the project with lively colors.

Leading Teens Closer To Christ!
Valentines Day for broken hearted.
“Praise The Lord Who Heals The Broken Hearted”, says the psalmist in this week’s readings. Good news
for us, as we prepare to leave the season of Ordinary Time (only ten days to go) to get ready for the Lenten
journey. Fresh from the secular bombardment of Valentines Day, and all that goes with it, we have been
manipulated to think of the heart on a purely romantic level. And, in so doing, we tend to think of love as a
purely romantic notion. Even the word “romance” has an odd connotation. Some define it as a relationship
that involves love between two people. Others as a quality or feeling of excitement and mystery that can be
associated with love, while still others talk of romance as a state that involves heroic and chivalric actions.
Rarely do we see or hear of romance without hearing of love. Love has been heralded throughout our history as the ultimate goal for individuals and societies. That being said, it is no wonder that in many ways, everyone can identify with “the broken heart syndrome”. Only in our scriptures do we hear of love as a selfless
act. “Greater love has no man than to lay down his life for another” or the radical commandment of Christ.
“It has been said that there is no greater commandment than to love the Lord your God...and your neighbor
as yourself...but I tell you love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you!” In this week’s readings, St. Paul tells us, he “has made himself a slave to all...to save some...for the sake of the gospel”. Job
states that he is filled with restlessness and questions whether “man’s life on earth is nothing more than a
drudgery?” Jobs fidelity is based upon the promise of the Lord. In this week’s gospel, Jesus is seen curing
the sick, healing the broken hearted, preaching the good news, expelling demons and proclaiming, “for this
purpose I have come”. The Church is a community of love. It continues the person and purpose of Christ in
space and time. While it remains imperfect, it’s a incarnate state. It remains inviolable, without spot and
wrinkle for Christ the Head of this mystical body. Let us prepare for our Lenten journey and join with St.
Augustine, proclaiming that our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee O Lord and join with Mother Theresa who reminds us to give God permission. Come into my heart, Jesus, and heal me of all that is not
of you so I better do your will.

Steubenville Retreat in New York City, August 5-7, the approximate cost for a group of 30 teens
will be $8,000. For the trip to Philadelphia on September 22-25 to see the Holy Father, the approximate cost for a day trip for a group with 30 teens is to be determined, but initial estimates
suggest between $3,000 and $6,000.

In today’s Gospel, the description of the “town” gathered outside Simon’s
door, indicates that this a small village or an out of the way place. Jesus is
going to the least of people in the least of places. As members of a music ministry, we are challenged to bring our song to people on the margins. For those
who can no longer raise their voices in song or play an instrument because of
illness or infirmity, may the song of the assembly be a source of comfort. We
pray: God, our comfort and consolation, bless us with your presence today.
Remain with us in the struggles of life and continue to strengthen us to serve.
Let our song of rejoicing go on. May our witness to the Gospel never waiver
when we face trials or suffering. Send your angels to watch over us,
