Dear parishioners,
The 42nd annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., will be held this Thursday, January 22,
the forty-second anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. Information on buses from Mercer County is on page 6. (Last year, most or all of the buses from our diocese did not go
to the March, because of the snowstorm that day.)
If you cannot attend the march in Washington, you are welcome to go to the annual Rally for
Life (sponsored by New Jersey Right to Life), on the front steps of the State House in Trenton, from
11:00 a.m. to around 1:00 p.m. (Built in 1792, the state house is the second oldest state capitol building in continuous legislative use in the U.S., after only Maryland’s state house, which was built in
1772.)
In addition, our parish’s Respect Life Committee will have an evening of prayer that night,
based on the U.S. bishops’ annual designation of January 22 as a “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”. The evening of prayer will be held in St. Raphael Church -- after the
7:00 p.m. Mass -- including exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, recitation of the rosary, and benediction. (There will not be confessions that evening.)
At Hospitality Sunday on January 4, a parishioner told me that they missed Mass on the holy
day, January 1, but that it was not their fault. They said they had gone to church for the evening Mass
on January 1, but discovered there was no Mass. When they told another parishioner what happened,
that parishioner told them that “Father Chang canceled that Mass”. I then stated to the first parishioner that you cannot believe everything you hear, because I had not canceled the Mass. The parishioner
replied that we always have a 7 p.m. Mass on holy days of obligation. I explained that Catholic parishes do not have evening Mass on New Year’s Day, Christmas Day, and Easter Sunday, because people gather with their family and friends for dinner on those days. (The same practice applies on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving Day -- even though our parish usually
has a 7 p.m. Mass Monday through Friday.) An exception is when Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 fall on Saturday, in which case there are evening Masses, but they are vigil Masses for Sunday. For the third holy
day of obligation (Ascension Thursday), we always have a 7 p.m. Mass. For the remaining three holy
days of obligation in the United States (Aug. 15, Nov. 1, and Dec. 8), we have an evening Mass except
when they fall on a Saturday (in which case the evening Mass is the vigil Mass for Sunday).
This Friday, January 23, is the optional Memorial of St. Marianne Cope, one of three U.S.
saints who were canonized in October 2012 (along with St. Kateri Tekakwitha and St. Pedro Calungsod). Born in Germany, she came to the U.S. at age four and became a Sister of Saint Francis of Syracuse and later ministered to St. Damien de Veuster in the leper colony of Moloka’i (in Hawaii). St.
Marianne Cope, pray for us. Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and of unborn children, pray for us and especially for those children who are in their mother’s womb.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS
Bible Study
The Faith Formation Office will begin the second semester of its
annual Bible Study Program on Tuesday, January 20, at 12
noon, in the Spiritual Center, or Wednesday, January 21, at
7:30 pm, in the All Purpose Room. This semester will be the
Book of James (Jeff Cavins)(10-week course). Program ends

From Monday, December 1, through Sunday, April 5— Holy
Communion is being distributed under only one species (the
Sacred Host) instead of both species (the Sacred Host and the
Precious Blood), because of the flu season. Under the principle
of concomitance, we receive all of Jesus—Body, Blood, soul,
and divinity, whole and entire—under either species. Thus, we
do not have to receive both species at Communion.

If you would like a minister of Holy Communion to bring Communion to you in your pew or wheelchair, would you or a relative, friend or other Mass attendee please contact one of the

Is God Calling You?
Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men who
are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them to a
life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a
priestly vocation with other like-minded men through prayer and
sharing vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings
are not meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their
vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering if the
priesthood is your true vocation and build your relationship with
Christ along the way.

The long standing tradition of Safety Patrol continues at Saint Raphael School. This group of dedicated
middle school students, assist the teachers during lunch and recess. Additionally, they help teachers
during dismissal with students in Kindergarten to third-grade. The teachers and parents are grateful for
the extra hands and eyes that help to keep their children safe during the school day.

FOOD PANTRY
The order list for food that can be purchased, at a reduced cost, from
Mercer Street Friends has been reduced from 20 or 40 items to eight
(8). This means we now have to begin purchasing from other suppliers
at an increased cost to us.
Our main source of food will be dependent on the donations of our parishioners. Hopefully, this will help keep our shelves stocked.
All types of non-perishable food can be dropped off in the narthex of
both churches when you come to Mass; or if you would like to donate
perishable food, prior arrangements can be made by calling 585-3848.

Leading Teens Closer To Christ!
WORD TO THE WISE...
There was an old joke that went like this: “A man came into the store with two bananas in his
ears. The store owner said, “Hey, why have you got two bananas in your ears?” The man replied,
“WHAT? I CAN’T HEAR YOU, I HAVE TWO BANANAS STUCK IN MY EARS!” In our screenbased world, everyone is glued to their smart phone, tablet or computer, instantaneously responding to various forms of communication from anywhere on the planet at any time. We still
struggle to hear the voice of God. We struggle to remove the bananas. We can receive so much
information these days and from so many different sources, yet the most important information
comes from the most important source and we cannot hear it, we cannot hear Him. Why is that?
We must try and be still for a while and get quieter, because God continues to call us and, as the
prophet Elijah found out, He sometimes speaks in “a still small voice”. Small or large voice, God
has something to say to us. He wants us to listen and then to respond. Sometimes it is a direct
message while at other times it may be that He wants to use us as His voice for others. Once we
are able to develop this aspect of our relationship with God, all other relationships will benefit.
Hearing God more clearly will help us hear others more clearly. The number three is synonymous with various stories throughout the scriptures. Jesus fell three times, Peter was asked “do
you love me?” three times (after he had denied Jesus three times). I am sure you can think of
many more. In this week’s first reading, we have the Lord calling out to Samuel (three times) before Eli realizes what is going on and directs him appropriately. Whilst reflecting on this scripture,
I begin to wonder how many times the Lord calls me before I hear him, before I realize it is Him. I
wonder who and where are the “Eli” characters in my life to help me discern the Lord’s call and to
help me answer correctly and reply, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening” and then having
heard the Lord, we, like the psalmist, might also respond,” “Here am I, Lord, I come to do Your
will!” As we enter into this short period of Ordinary Time, let us resolve to lose the bananas from
our ears and listen to the Word so we might be better vessels of His love, peace, and joy to all
we meet.
