It also highlights events, activities and academic prowess and achievements. In this edition of RIPPLES -2k13 we have tried to capture this academic year’s excitement and activities. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the students the very best for their exams and also to share that some of us stop in trying times . We should always face a challenge with “How we can?” and not with “Why we can not?” Have a positive attitude as being an optimist, you can turn scars into stars and thus win laurels of life. An attempt is made to make the magazine more attractive and readable. The student editors deserve kudos for their creativity in designing the cover page. Credit goes both to the editorial team and the students for the choice of topics and art. It is an interesting exercise to see how the young mind looks at the world around us. DEPARTMENT OF ECE Mr. B.Sridhar B.Tech(ECE), M.Tech(DSCE), Ph.d.., Head of the Dept. HOD’s Message Today's youth need to choose a career and that too rightly. It is a significant and a lifechanging decision. Choosing engineering as a profession is highly commendable. Technological development alone will take India to the forefront of developed nations and the momentum to this technological revolution will be lent by none, but the future engineers. In the journey of life, the path one takes is as important as the destination itself. May I, therefore, suggest that before one takes the next step in realizing their career aspirations and professional goals, pause for a moment and give a serious thought to the choice of Institution that one wishes to make, where they would spend four valuable years of their life. This may turn out to be the most important decision of ones life and hold one in good stead in the ever changing and highly competitive environment of today. RAMACHANDRAIAH M.A., M. Phil., Ph.D. HOD's Message: : ॥ Shat doshaah purusheneha haatavyaah bhootimichchhataa Nidraa tandraa bhayam krodhah aalasyam deerghasootritaa One who desires to be prosperous and happy should give up these six faults , namely, excessive sleep, sluggishness, fear, anger, laziness and procrastination in decision-making. Success is a matter of attitude. I t is a matter of futuristic thinking and planning. We can say that it is about doing things carefully. There are three dimensions to success-ASK principle of success- the Attitude dimension, the Skill dimension and the Knowledge dimension. Many people do have all the knowledge in the world and yet fail to achieve anything due to lack of skills, most often in dealing with others. There are the second set of people who have the knowledge as well as the skills but attitudes allude them due to the lack of an attitude. Gandhi, the Mahatma is the combination of these three. With many adversaries and poor financial background Abraham Lincoln<s attitude was always rich. It is the right attitude that helped Henry Ford achieve global success. Right attitude is all about being passionate about what you do. All the great people were passionate about their work. While dealing with people one should not forget an important principle of trying to put oneself in the other person’s shoes and understand his point of view before passing any judgment. To achieve success we need complete knowledge of the task on hand. The statement ‘Knowledge is power’ stresses the need to have complete and undistorted knowledge. The light of knowledge should be kept burning to achieve work-excellence and work- efficiency. Thus success is about having a clear goal in mind, which has achievable possibilities and for which you have put in your best efforts "Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there." - -- John Wooden, Basketball Coach Dr. B. KALYANI MBA, M.Phil., (Ph.D) HOD- Department of Management Studies HOD’s Message:- CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION "Capital isn't so important in business. Experience isn't so important. You can get both these things. What is important is ideas. If you have ideas, you have the main asset you need, and there isn't any limit to what you can do with your business and your life." — Harvey Firestone The economic crisis has made at least one thing clear. This is that over-dependence on large traditional industries, and low productivity, low wage sectors is an immense risk in a globalised economy. In the past, economic sectors have come and gone, bringing first prosperity then wreaking havoc on cities and their inhabitants. A more useful approach is to view creativity as the process of generating ideas whilst seeing innovation as the sifting, refining and more critically – the implementation of those ideas. Creativity is about divergent thinking. Innovation is about convergent thinking. Creativity is about the generation of ideas and innovation is about putting them into action. Creativity – coming up with new ideas - is not enough. We need innovation – the taking of new or existing ideas and putting them into action. This requires the application of existing knowledge and the development of appropriate new knowledge. Coming up with new ideas is the food of innovation. Innovation is a far tougher proposition than creativity. We tend to think of an innovation as a new product but you can innovate with a new process, method, business model, partnership, route to market or marketing method. Indeed every aspect of your business operation is a candidate for innovation. Peter Drucker said, ‘Every organization must prepare for the abandonment of everything it does.’ So do not restrict your vision of innovation to products. Some of the most powerful innovations you can make are in business methods and customer services. If we look at companies like Dell, eBay and Amazon we see that their great innovations were with their business models rather than in new products. Innovations can be incremental or radical. Every improvement that you make in products or services can be seen as an incremental innovation. Most businesses and most managers are good at incremental innovation. They see problems in the current set-up and they fix them. Radical innovations involve finding an entirely new way to do things. As such they are often risky and difficult to implement. Most larger organizations and most managers are poor at radical innovation. If you had been making LP records then you could have introduced incremental innovations in your design and marketing. However if this was your strategy then a radical innovation, the CD, would eventually kill you. The CD manufacturer could similarly introduce various incremental improvements. Once again a radical innovation, music downloads over the internet, would make your offering obsolete. So we need to constantly look for incremental innovations and radical innovations. We need to develop creativity and turn it quickly into innovation. NEW FACULTY MEMBERS NAME OF THE FACULTY 1. Mr.CH. It is generally expected that the graduates should be equipped with a balance of technical skills in addition to the relevant “soft skills” required in the work place. The ground reality is that most of the graduates passing out of various engineering institutes all over India do not meet the industry employability standards. In order to meet this deficit a particular pedagogical system has evolved I.T finishing schools. These institutes enables the entry-level graduate engineer by providing critical skill sets, here people who leave professional educational institutions can work towards accessing the skill required to get into the industry. Current Scenario The current educational system does not equip the student with the desired knowledge and skill set needed to excel in practical- professional life. At present the fresh graduate student is hired and then trained during their induction either through product oriented training program or through in- house training program. In-house training programs are limited to basic orientation as vendor based training programs are expansive. Finishing School is a new concept in which curriculum is developed for students to prepare them for requirements of industries. The finishing school aims to provide skills both technical and soft skills to people to facilitate their employability and play a part in the supply side issues (of talent) of the industry. The Need The Industry sees the fresh graduate as one, needing a “sound base of mathematics and engineering technology” also must be equipped as communicators, with a broad understanding of, and ability to interact in the broader society in which their profession operates. Employer Satisfaction with Graduate Skills, in particular notes the following “skill deficiencies in new graduates: Creativity and flair, oral business communication and problem solving. An independent study conducted on CEOs, found that long-term job success depends75 percent on people skills and only 25 percent on technical knowledge. Another study reveals that 85 percent of jobs and promotions happened because of the candidate’s attitude and only 15percent due to the facts and figures he packed under his belt. Financial services firms in India are experiencing difficulties in recruiting the right people with the right skills, and that a “soft skills gap” is making itself increasingly apparent. This report attempts to highlight the gaps and provide direction for employers and educators looking to bridge this gap between the expectations of the financial sector and the current talent availability. The urgency of the need for inculcating good soft skills can be understood from various surveys conducted recently which concluded that presently only 15 to 20 percent engineering and other graduates being churned out every year in India were employable in the IT industry. Sadly, of the large number most are unsuitable because of lack of soft skills. The concept of Finishing School programme is a pre-employment training programmes for graduating students from Engineering/ Polytechnic Colleges offering different specializations to cater to the needs of different industries.Finishing School is a supplementary training school that attempts to make-up for deficiencies of students providing The Finishing School aims to provide skills both in technical and soft skills to students to facilitate their employability and play a part in the supply side issues of the industry. The aim is to “sharpen some of the social, presentation and communication skills in which many Indian engineers are found wanting when they interact with clients and colleagues from other cultures Finishing School is needed to bridg the gap that existing between the needs of the industry and the academic curricula. Through Finishing School, the students will get an opportunity to acquire and reinforce industryspecific knowledge, skills and competencies delivered by trained faculty and practicing managers from the industry. OBJECTIVES • To enhance the employability of engineering students. • To enhance the standard of fresh engineering graduates so that they become acceptable to the industry. • To cater to the needs of the industry. • To create a platform where the students can work towards accessing the skills required to get into industry. • To bridge the gap between industry and educational institutions. • To provide both technical and soft skill to people to facilitate their employability. • To meet the needs of unemployed and non-employable engineering graduates and to improve their communication as well as I.T. skills. • To reinforce the students skills and acquire industry–specific knowledge from trained faculty and experts from industries. • To offer suitable candidates to different industries. • To help young graduates to find jobs through appropriate training. Sphoorthy Finishing School Career planning needs a scientific approach to get success. Sphoorthy strongly believes that students are to be moulded and shaped through a systematic approach on the line of Finishing School concept. While pursuing their programme, they will undergo competency mapping and development process to be prepared for entry to their dream career. Sphoorthy has lunched the much awaited Finishing School. The school is benchmarked according the present ability of our professional students and enabling them with the required expertise on corporate code of conduct and business etiquettes. This Finishing School conducts Power Packed Personality Placement Grooming Module (4PGM) for all the students to shape them as professionals. Its high time that companies also got involved in the education scenario. The curriculum and the examination system is controlled by a lobby of text book publishers and university staff. The finishing school concept bridges the gap between the generic and concept-oriented university education and the market demand for application-ready software professionals. It would result in enormous savings for the software company. A company like Tata Consultancy Services spends Rs 8 crore annually on training engineers before getting them started on projects. On an average around six months is spent on training new recruits Need for Finishing School Finishing School is needed to bridge the gap that existing between the needs of the industry and the academic curricula. Through Finishing School, the students will get an opportunity to acquire and reinforce industry-specific knowledge, skills and competencies delivered by trained faculty and practicing managers from I.T. & ITES (I.T. Enabled Services) industry. Especially the fast growing I.T. sector has created a huge career opportunity in its wake. The profiles of the career opportunities keep dynamically changing as newer and newer technologies emerge and the global market requirements change. The formal education focuses on the fundamentals, concepts in different subjects and brings out with excellent basics and strong foundation over which the super structure could be built. However, the need and demand placed by the fast technological changes and the emerging global market trends that are making the growth of I.T. industry brings out the demand for complementing and supplementing the formal education through the non formal education and training. Hence, the need is in the form of “Finishing School” for training the students, faculty and even working professionals to keep pace with the demands of the industry as well as technological changes. Facilities The Finishing School, the concept is that learning and development happens best in an environment, which supports it. It has the potential to treat head injuries suffered in combat, car accidents, falls, or gunshot wounds. Developed by Dr. Ning Zhang at Clemson University in South Carolina, the gel is injected in liquid form at the site of injury and stimulates the growth of stem cells there. Brain injuries are particularly hard to repair, since injured tissues swell up and can cause additional damage to the cells. So far, treatments have tried to limit this secondary damage by lowering the temperature or relieving the pressure at the site of injury. However, these techniques are often not very effective. More recently, scientists have considered transplanting donor brain cells into the wound to repair damaged tissue. This method has so far had limited results when treating brain injuries. The donor cells often fail to grow or stimulate repair at the injury site, possibly because of the inflammation and scarring present there. The injury site also typically has very limited blood supply and connective tissue, which might prevent donor cells from getting the nutrients they require. Dr. Zhang's gel, however, can be loaded with different chemicals to stimulate various biological processes at the site of injury. In previous research done on rats, she was able to use the gel to help re-establish full blood supply at the site of brain injury. This could help create a better environment for donor cells. In a follow-up study, Dr. Zhang loaded the gel with immature stem cells, as well as the chemicals they needed to develop into full-fledged adult brain cells. When rats with severe brain injuries were treated with this mixture for eight weeks, they showed signs of significant recovery. The new gel could treat patients at varying stages following injury, and is expected to be ready for testing in humans in about three years G. MUKESH (Assistant Professor in ECE) FYI: Why Is There A Winter Flu Season? An illustrated explanation of why the world's most obnoxious virus at least doesn't stick around all year. Flu season is in full swing across the U.S. this week, and it's right on time. Actually, it would have been on time if it showed up in November, too, or even in March--unlike the actual seasons, the timing of flu season is a little hard to predict. Except for one thing: it always happens in winter. In fact, everywhere on Earth where people have a winter season, they also have a flu season: Flu-related Google searches: Part of what makes the timing of each flu season unpredictable is that scientists still don't understand exactly why we have one at all. There have, of course, been lots of theories: One theory is that flu peaks in winter because people spend more time indoors, with the windows closed, breathing each other’s air: The Togetherness Flu Theory: Other scientists have argued that the darkness (i.e. lack of Vitamin D and melatonin) and cold of winter weaken our immune systems, making us more susceptible to the virus: The Dark Cold Flu Theory: A third theory is that--regardless of how we deal with the cold--the flu virus thrives in the cold, dry air of winter, but suffers in the warm, humid air of summer. The Cold-Weather Virus Theory: There's even a theory about how the winter flu is ushered in by changes in air circulation in the upper atmosphere: The Upper Atmosphere Flu Theory: For a while, scientists had a hard time thinking up ways to test these theories: they needed to be able to run experiments, but researchers aren't allowed to infect humans with nasty illnesses, and most lab animals aren't affected by the flu the same way people are. But then, in 2007, a medical researcher named Peter Palese stumbled across an 80-year-old journal article that reported that guinea pigs get infected and pass on the flu just like humans. Palese decided to test theory #3--the idea that the flu virus does better in cold, dry air than warm, humid air. He acquired some guinea pigs and ran several experiments to see how temperature and humidity affect the way the flu spreads. In each experiment, he injected half the guinea pigs with influenza A (the common flu), and put them in a crate next to a crate of uninfected animals. Guinea Pig Experiment: At a temperature of 41 degrees, all four of the exposed guinea pigs caught the flu, but when Palese repeated the experiment at 68 degrees, only one of the exposed animals was infected. And when he and his colleagues ran the test at a temperature of 86 degrees, none of the exposed animals got sick. Since winter air is also much drier than summer air--cold air can't hold as much water vapor--the researchers also ran experiments where they varied the humidity in the room but kept the temperature constant: the drier the air, they found, the more animals got sick. Palese's guinea pig study showed that the influenza virus really does spread more effectively in cold, dry air-but it left one important question unanswered: why? One possibility has to do with the way the flu spreads through air. When an infected person breathes in and all the tiny airways in their lungs open, a thin film of fluid stretches across the opening airways and then breaks, releasing little virus-containing droplets into the air in the lungs. When the person breathes out, those droplets are expelled into the air, where they begin to fall toward the ground: The Exhaled Flu Virus: And here--in the flu droplet's earthward fall--is where humidity comes in. As this droplet falls, it also begins to evaporate. The drier the air is, the more moisture evaporates from the droplet, and the smaller the droplet gets. AND if it gets smaller, the effect of air resistance gets bigger. Eventually, if enough of the droplet evaporates, the flu virus is whisked away on air currents and can float around for days, until someone else breathes it in: How Humidity Might Help The Flu Travel: Several studies have made the case for this "transmission" hypothesis since Palese's guinea pig study, but other researchers think the biggest factor is actually the virus's survival. One study found that the flu virus survives for much longer in low humidity than high humidity: How Humidity Affects Virus Survival: Quite possibly, the flu's annual winter-time parade through our immune systems has to do with both factors: the virus survives better and transmits more easily in cooler, drier air. The case isn't closed yet--and researchers are still looking into some of those other theories, like the idea that our immune systems are weaker in winter--but, for anyone looking for ways to avoid the seasonal flu (in addition to the flu shot, of course), a portable humidifier seems like a good place to start. G. Kiranmayee (Assistant Professor in ECE) My Idea about Happy Life The word happiness is relative and it varies in terms of personal belief and experience. According to me a Happy Life is something that helps me to be content from my inner self. As depicted earlier, happiness varies in terms of personal belief, I believe in the happiness that not only satisfies me, but also makes my near and dear ones feel good. An important object of happiness is sacrifice. We must sacrifice something or the other to see our closed ones happy. According to me it is very important to prioritize whom we want to make happy and how important it is to sacrifice something for that. For example, I love my mom and I also love to smoke, but my mom does not want me to smoke at all. In this case, I need to decide what can make me more happy- smoking, or my mom's happiness that she gets if I quit smoking. For me, second option would make me happy. In this case, I need to sacrifice smoking. If someone opts to have the first option, he has to sacrifice his mom's happiness to be happy. A Happy Life, in a nutshell, is a life of our choice, and it's our choice that makes us what we are. K. Deepti ECE III A Does Green tea prevent certain types of cancers ? Apparently a few scientists in Spain and Britain think this may be the case. Researchers in both countries have been able to show that a specific compound found in green tea known as EGCG (the AP article on green tea did not disclose what this acronym actually stands for) has the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. EGCG seems to accomplish the remarkable feat of preventing cancer cell growth by inhibiting a particular enzyme, dihydrofolate reductase and according to a Professor Roger Thorneley of the John Innes Center in Norwich, England, "This is the first time, to our knowledge, a known target for an anti-cancer drug has been identified as being inhibited by EGCG". The wonderful news for green tea afficionados, of course, is that green tea contains about five times as much EGCG as regular tea. However, as Professor Thorneley states, so far there has been no determination as to how much green tea an individual would need to consume to obtain the beneficial effects provided by this compound. But since he also goes on record to state that EGCG may be just one of several ingredients in green tea that have such properties, there's certainly no reason to stop drinking green tea. Unless you are a pregnant woman, that is. Women who are pregnant are given the advice that folic acid supplements may protect newborns against spina bifida. Apparently, green tea, if consumed in large amounts, can have the effect of decreasing folic acid's effectivene Eshan Yadav ECE III A Computer Diagnosis One day Bill complained to his friend that his elbow really hurt. His friend suggested that he go to a computer at the drug store that can diagnose anything quicker and cheaper than a doctor. ''Simply put in a sample of your urine and the computer will diagnose your problem and tell you what you can do about it. It only costs $10." Bill figured he had nothing to lose, so he filled a jar with a urine sample and went to the drug store. Finding the computer, he poured in the sample and deposited the $10. The computer started making some noise and various lights started flashing. After a brief pause out popped a small slip of paper on which was printed: "You have tennis elbow. Soak your arm in warm water. Avoid heavy lifting. It will be better in two weeks." Later that evening while thinking how amazing this new technology was and how it would change medical science forever, he began to wonder if this machine could be fooled. He mixed together some tap water, a stool sample from his dog and urine samples from his wife and daughter. To top it off, he masturbated into the concoction. He went back to the drug store, located the machine, poured in the sample and deposited the $10. The computer again made the usual noise and printed out the following message: "Your tap water is too hard. Get a water softener. Your dog has worms. Get him vitamins. Your daughter is using cocaine. Put her in a rehabilitation clinic. Your wife is pregnant with twin girls. They aren't yours. Get a lawyer. And if you don't stop jerking off, your tennis elbow will never get better." He picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. The frog spoke again and said, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I'll become your girlfriend." The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. The frog spoke again and said, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll become your wife." The engineer took the frog out of his pocket again, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. Finally, the frog said, "What is the matter? I'm a beautiful princess. Why won`t you kiss me?" The engineer said, "Look, I'm a busy engineer. I don`t have time for a girlfriend or a wife, but a talking frog, now that's cool." Sai Pavan ECE IV B Bird Brained Two Irishmen walk into a pet shop. Right away they go to the bird section and Sean says to Paddy; "Dat''s Dem". The shopkeeper comes over and asks if he can help. "Yeah, we''ll take four of dem dere budgies in dat cage op dere", says Mick, "Put dem in a pepper bag" The shopkeeper does as asked and the two pay for the birds and leave. They get into Mick''s van and drive until they reach a cliff with a 500ft drop. "Dis looks loike a grand place", says Mick. He then takes the two birds out of the bag, places them on his shoulders and jumps off the cliff. Paddy watches as his friend drops off the edge and goes straight down for a few seconds followed by a loud "Splat!" As Paddy looks over the edge of the cliff he shakes his head. "Focket Dat," Paddy says, "dis budgie jumpin'' is too dangerous for me..." A few minutes later, Seamus approaches. He too has been to the pet shop and is carrying the familiar 'pepper bag.' Seamus pulls a parrot out of the bag and Paddy notices that in the other hand Seamus is carrying a gun. "Watch this Paddy" he says, as he launches himself over the edge of the cliff. Paddy watches as half way down Seamus takes the gun and blows the parrot''s head off. Seamus continues to plummet until he joins Sean''s mashed remains at the bottom of the cliff. Paddy shakes his head and says, "An oim never troyin'' that parrotshooting oider..." After a few minutes, Danny strolls up. He too has been to the pet shop and walks up with his 'pepper bag.' Danny pulls a chicken out of the bag. He puts the chicken above his head, holds its legs and launches himself off the cliff with the same result. Once more Paddy shakes his head. The chicken takes out a cigarette and begins to smoke. The egg, pissed off, takes one look at the chicken, rolls over and pulls the blanket over him and says, "I guess we answered that question!" K. Pavan Kumar ECE IVA A Question of Time Puzzle The hour and minute hands are at equal distance from the 6 hour, what time will it be exactly? Solution: Say answer is "8 hour X minute". According as proposition, the angle between the minute hand and "mark 4" of the watch is equal to the angle between the hour hand and "mark 8" of the watch. We know in 60 minutes the minute hand makes 360 degrees (360/60=6 degrees per minute) and the hour hand makes 360/12=30 degrees (30/60=1/2 degrees per minute). Therefore, (20-X) minutes corresponds to 6(20-X) degrees (this is the angle between the minute hand and "mark 4"). And in X minutes the hour hand makes X/2 degrees with "mark 8". Thus, X/2=6(20-X) gives X=18 minutes 27 and 9/13 second. So, the answer is 8 hour, 18 minutes, 27 9/13 second. U. Siva Jagan (Assistant Professor in ECE) Meet Diego-San, The Humanoid Robot Toddler Anyone who has witnessed the development of a newborn into a toddler knows that babies progress fairly quickly from making seemingly random, spastic body movements to interacting with the world in what seems a much more natural way--through touching and grabbing as well as through social cues, like smiling, grimacing, and other facial expressions. Now we’re getting our first real glimpse of a multidisciplinary project mashing up robotics, neuroscience, computer vision, developmental psychology, and machine learning, a project led by University of California San Diego researchers has created Diego-san, a robotic one-year-old that learns to control its body and interact with others the same way a human baby does. At four feet 3 inches tall and 66 pounds, Diego-san isn’t a perfect physical analog for a toddler (miniaturizing all of the parts would have driven Diego-san’s price tag way up), but his 44 pneumatic joints and the 27 moving parts in his extremely life-like face make for a humanoid that can mimic human movements--at least those of a one-year-old--quite deftly. The high definition cameras in his eyes take in the world around him--gestures, movements, facial expressions-and the team is developing algorithms that allow Diego-san to “learn” from these cues the same way a human baby would (to the extent that developmental psychologists understand this process, anyhow). The first of Diego-san that’s been publicly released, depicting the robot moving through a variety of facial expressions that it has learned from the humans it interacts with. Fair warning: Diego-san flirts dangerously with the uncanny valley phenomenon, as his facial expressions are just life-like enough to be somewhat creepy. But the ability to build a humanoid robot with this kind of human-like sophistication--particularly where the face is concerned--is fairly amazing. Diego-san’s research goals go both ways. for the roboticists and computer scientists on the project, Diego-San is granting a deeper understanding of sensory motor intelligence from a computational vantage point. From the other side, by mimicking the development of human babies Diego-san is helping developmental psychologists understand this phase of human development during which children first learn to interact with their physical environment and the other humans that populate it. The Samsung SR8855 NaviBot Robotic Vacuum Cleaner offers an efficient, innovative way to clean your home. Its Visionnary Mapping technology uses an onboard camera to capture images of the area to form a virtual map of the cleaning zone, helping it plan the most efficient route. And while in progress, its 38 sensors ensure you won’t have to supervise it, instead working to prevent it from colliding, falling or getting tangled in wires. Programme it from entering certain areas with the Virtual Guard feature which creates an infra red barrier the NaviBot can’t cross and choose from its six cleaning modes to best suit your cleaning needs. Visionnary Mapping takes an image of the room to plan the best route Visionnary Mapping designs the best cleaning route The NaviBot is equipped with an onboard camera, which prior to cleaning, takes a picture of the room’s ceiling. The camera, capable of capturing up to 30 frames per second, creates an image which is then used by the vacuum cleaner to produce a virtual map of the cleaning zone. This map directs the NaviBot in its cleaning of the room maximising its efficiency with an approach that’s methodical and focused. This prevents it from missing any areas and as it remembers where it’s already cleaned, stops needless repeat cleanings saving time, energy and money. Multi sensors for effective and safe cleaning With 38 sensors directing its path, the NaviBot is constantly alert to its surroundings. This information helps direct its movements ensuring it makes a safe and effective path around your home, keeping your involvement to a minimum. Clean into the corners with the Edge mode function Sensory functions include: Anti-collision. Protecting your furniture are the vacuum’s infra red anti-collision sensors which detect obstacles. If in edge mode, it will approach an obstacle and stop before impact. Create cleaning barriers with the Virtual Guard Touch sensors. If you wish the NaviBot to clean up to the edges of your furniture, programme it to edge mode. When in edge mode, the robot’s sensors alert it to approaching obstacles and it slows down, bumping lightly into the obstruction with its soft rubber bumper. It will gently try to push the obstacle out of its path and then, if it’s unable to do so, will clean around the edges. Anti-fall. Stairs aren’t a problem with the NaviBot. Its multi sensors detect when it’s about to fall and so it immediately stops and quickly shifts into reverse. Anti-tangle. If it becomes entangled in wires, the NaviBot will stop and reverse its brush rotation to free itself. Helping it manoeuvre in tight spots, its wheels are also spring-loaded enabling it to travel over obstacles up to 15 millimetres (mm) in height, such as door sills, rugs and wires. Keep areas out of bounds with the Virtual Guard Want to clean around a pet or sleeping children? Simply select the NaviBot's Virtual Guard feature which ensures it doesn’t enter these out of bound areas. Once programmed, an infra red barrier is created which the robot cannot cross; limiting the areas it can clean. There are three distance settings, allowing you to choose the robot’s cleaning boundaries, or alternatively use the Virtual Guard function to prioritise the cleaning route. Using this feature, you can choose for one area to be fully cleaned before another is started to give you greater control over the robot’s cleaning pattern. The SR8855 model has two Virtual Guards. Recharges automatically and resumes where it finished Recharging items can be a nuisance that is all too often overlooked until the last moment. D. Kishore (Assistant Professor in ECE) Engineer's Puzzle Big Jim, engineer of the Oval Express says: "We blew off a cylinder head an hour after leaving the station and had to continue the trip at three-fifths of the former speed, which brought us in two hours late. If the accident had occurred fifty miles farther on, the train would have arrived forty minutes sooner". How long was the run between stations? Solution: If the train takes x minute to cover 50 miles then its full-speed would be 50/x miles per hour and it's speed after blowing one of the cylinder would be 50/(x+40) miles per hour. Therefore, (3/5) of (50/x)=50/(x+4x) gives X=60minutes or one hour; i.e. the full-speed of the train was 50 miles per hour and its three- fifth speed was 30miles per hour. Suppose, the train needed to cover y miles when the cylinder blew. Then, {(y/50)+2} hour=y/30 hour gives y=150 miles. Since, the train already had covered 50 miles at full-speed before the cylinder blew, so the run between the stations was 50+150=200 miles. T. Mounika ECE II A Burning Island A man is stranded on an island covered in forest. One day, when the wind is blowing from the west, lightning strikes the west end of the island and sets fire to the forest. The fire is very violent, burning everything in its path, and without intervention the fire will burn the whole island, killing the man in the process. There are cliffs around the island, so he cannot jump off. How can the man survive the fire? (There are no buckets or any other means to put out the fire) The Solution . . . The man picks up a piece of wood and lights it from the fire on the west end of the island. He then quickly carries it near the east end of he island and starts a new fire. The wind will cause that fire to burn out the eastern end and he can then shelter in the burnt area. The man survives the fire, but dies of starvation, with all the food in the forest burnt. The research simply involved analyzing plotlines, themes and the connection of the director to engineering to simply come us with a list of movies lacking the cliché love stories and half-baked attempts at intellectual engagement. The following list is simply the 10 best movies that would be highly entertaining for any engineer. The Social Network Director David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven) teams with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) to explore the meaning of success in the early 21st century from the perspectives of the technological innovators who revolutionized the way we all communicate. The year was 2003. As prohibitively expensive technology became affordable to the masses and the Internet made it easy to stay in touch with people who were halfway across the world, Harvard undergrad and computer programming wizard Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) launched a website with the potential to alter the very fabric of our society. At the time, Zuckerberg was just six years away from making his first million. But his hearty payday would come at a high price, because despite all of Zuckerberg's wealth and success, his personal life began to suffer as he became mired in legal disputes, and discovered that many of the 500 million people he had friended during his rise to the top were eager to see him fall. Chief among that growing list of detractors was Zuckerberg's former college friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), whose generous financial contributions to Facebook served as the seed that helped the company to sprout. And some might argue that Zuckerberg's bold venture wouldn't have evolved into the cultural juggernaut that it ultimately became had Napster founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) not spread the word about Facebook to the venture capitalists from Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, the Winklevoss twins (Armie Hammer and Josh Pence) engage Zuckerberg in a fierce courtroom battle for ownership of Facebook that left many suspecting the young entrepreneur might have let his greed eclipse his better judgment. The Social Network was based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich 21 Director Robert Luketic adapts Ben Mezrich's best-seller Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions to tell the true-life tale of six genius students who used their brains to beat considerable odds. Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) may be shy, but his wallflower reputation betrays his inner brilliance. As smart as Ben may be, however, if he can't pay his tuition he'll be kicked out of M.I.T. Fortunately, the answer to all of Ben's problems is right there in the cards. Recruited to join a team of extremely gifted students who have used their mastery of numbers to beat the odds at blackjack, Ben procures a fake identity in order to join the casino scammers and their brilliant leader -- eccentric math professor and stats genius Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey) -- in some highly profitable weekend excursions to Las Vegas. Counting cards isn't illegal, and by using a complex series of signals, this team has cracked the code. Of course, it doesn't take long for Ben to become seduced by the glamorous Las Vegas lifestyle, and the attention afforded to him by his sexy teammate Jill Taylor (Kate Bosworth) finds him pushing his luck to the absolute limits. Laurence Fishburne stars as Cole Williams, the Sin City security chief who catches on to the group and makes it his mission to expose their lucrative blackjack scam. The Bridge on the River Kwai Perhaps one of those movies that every civil engineer should watch, The Bridge on the River Kwai is about British prisoners of war during World War II who are ordered to build a bridge to accommodate the BurmaSiam railway. Their instinct is to sabotage the bridge but, under the leadership of Colonel Nicholson, they are persuaded that the bridge should be constructed as a symbol of British morale, spirit and dignity in adverse circumstances. At first, the prisoners admire Nicholson when he bravely endures torture rather than compromise his principles for the benefit of the Japanese commandant Saito. He is an honorable but arrogant man, who is slowly revealed to be a deluded obsessive. He convinces himself that the bridge is a monument to British character, but actually is a monument to himself, and his insistence on its construction becomes a subtle form of collaboration with the enemy. SWADES Here's an interesting movie that follows one man's journey back to his home country and to the one person from his past that holds great memories. Mohan Bhargav returns to India to find the elderly woman who took great care of him in his youth, one that he truly sees as a mother of his heart. Mohan takes time off to go in search for her, but comes to realize that there is more work to be done in the small village that he finds her living in. It is the general need of humanity that stirs an awakening within him, and he is compelled to do all that he possibly can. Shahrukh Khan stars. Worth seeing. Primer At night and on weekends, four men in a suburban garage have built a cottage industry of error-checking devices. But, they know that there is something more. There is some idea, some mechanism, some accidental side effect that is standing between them and a pure leap of innovation. And so, through trial and error they are building the device that is missing most. However, two of these men find the device and immediately realize that it is too valuable to market. The limit of their trust in each other is strained when they are faced with the question, If you always want what you can’t have, what do you want when you can have anything? Flight of the Phoenix Flight of the Phoenix, also by Jimmie Stewart, along with a top notch cast is an engaging story about a group of men stranded in the desert and how they “engineer” a way out. Picture this interesting premise: a cargo plane goes down in a sandstorm in the Sahara with less than a dozen men on board. One of the passengers is an airplane designer who comes up with the idea of ripping off the undamaged wing and using it as the basis for an airplane they will build to escape. Three Idiots Chetan Bhagat's best-selling novel 5 Point someone makes the leap to the big screen in this comedy about three engineering students whose friendship stands the test of time. As Farhan (R. Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) search the valleys for their missing friend Rancho (Aamir Khan), their memories drift back to the days when they we're all college roommates, and Rancho incurred the wrath of their headstrong dean Viru Sahastrabudhhe (aka Virus) (Boman Irani) by daring to propose radical theories that directly contradicted his teacher's lessons. Later, Rancho begins dating Virus' daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor), and gradually begins to gain the dean's respect. Flashing back to the present day, Farhan and Raju uncover some previously unknown facts about their old friend that leads them to question everything they ever thought they knew about him. The Dam Busters Finally, we are happy to officially proclaim The Dam Busters as an engineer’s war movie. The Dam Busters is the story about British engineer Barnes Wallace and his development of a bouncing bomb used to attack hydroelectric dams critical to Germany’s war production in WWII. The special effects are okay by 1950s standards, but still intriguing and well-acted. No Highway in the Sky The premise is as follows: Theodore Honey is an aeronautical engineer sent to Labrador from London to examine the wreckage of a new passenger plane designed by his company. His theory is that the planes are susceptible to metal fatigue after a specific amount of time in the air. The absent minded Honey boards the Reindeer class plane and only realizes that this particular plane is due to fail in the next few hours after the plane is airborne. He decides to warn the crew and creates an incident regardless of whether he is right or wrong. We like the movie because it does not have the typical chase scenes, blood or gratuitous skin. The movie is just an engrossing human story, a hallmark of Neville Shute’s writing. Flash of Genius Now for a more recent movie that is based on the true story of college professor and part-time inventor Robert Kearns’ long battle with the U.S. automobile industry. Flash of Genius tells the tale of one man whose fight to receive recognition for his ingenuity would come at a heavy price. But this determined engineer refused to be silenced, and he took on the corporate titans in a battle that nobody thought he could win. We like this movie not just because it is a well played little-guy-fights-back-against-the-big-corporation type of movie, but it also provides an epic story on ingenuity, family values and sanity. DID YOU EVER THINK ABOUT ‘Thinking’? Did you ever think about ‘Thinking’?... the query may seem weird and eccentric when you look at it for the first time, but if you care to reflect upon the idea in earnest, you will find that the question is a rational one and the answer to it is seldom in affirmative. All of us had spent more than three fourths of our lives so far in learning things new to us which may eventually help us to make a good living. The society had fed us with loads of information during this time and we, in turn, have dutifully taken it and tried to remember all that we can, but to this day, did anyone teach us ‘How to think properly and constructively?’ Eternal belief in age old principles is not a virtue and neither is complacency, unfortunately both these are prominent features of our educationists, they are under the impression that today’s system of education is impeccable, they think that their only obligation is deliberate transmission of the huge amount of information accumulated with them to the students, and worse, they feel it is good enough for the pupil as well as the nation When you ask them why they don’t approach the practice of education differently, by incorporating new methods like teaching children how to think, and similar things, they are ready with their answers, saying,” Information is enough, besides thinking cannot be taught” . This is a classic example of ignorance and misconception at its peak. Yes, I agree that there is no other solid substitute for information, we need as much as we can get, but it alone is just not enough, we need thinking as well. There is a thin line separating knowledge and wisdom, to cross that line and to become wise, we need the skill of thinking. Thinking is needed to see where to get more information. Thinking is needed to interpret information at hand. Thinking is required to put that information together to design solutions for various problems. Pure information is absolutely useless, except for answering quizzes or showing off your knowledge. Fatefully the traditional system of education emphasizes on giving the students as much as information possible and later on testing the pupil for his ability to remember the information rather than his ability in using that information to resolve and survive challenging situations .The flaw in this system is its failure to see the simple fact that when information is blended with the correct thinking methods, that amalgam is capable of producing incredible results. Most of the people feel that thinking is a matter of inborn intelligence and cannot be taught, that is simply not true. Do you know that a South American nation had introduced ‘Thinking’ as a part of academic curriculum of its children? The ‘SIX THINKING HATS’ method, a revolutionary thinking tool introduced by Dr. Edward de Bono is finding some use in the United Kingdom innovation sector, is offered by some facilitation companies, and has been trialed within the United Kingdom's Civil service. It is a tried and tested formula to teach thinking as a part of daily curriculum. But for us, here in our part of the world there is no ray of hope in the immediate horizon to learn ‘thinking’ as a subject, but we need not lament that fact, we can always improve our skills of thinking by reading avidly, solving brain teasers, spending less time on facebook and by not copying any of the assignments given to us. At least we have to start somewhere. And believe me it can really change your life and the lives the people around you as well. -Raghunandan B. (Third year CIVIL) The Indian Constitution What is a Constitution? A constitution is a written document that contains a set of rules for a government. It defines the fundamental political principles, and establishing the structure, procedures, powers and duties, of a government. By limiting the government's own reach, most constitution’s guarantee certain rights to the people. The term constitution can be applied to any overall law that defines the functioning of a government. Introduction to the Indian Constitution The Constitution of India is the world's lengthiest written constitution with 395 articles and 8 schedules. It contains the good points taken from the constitutions of many countries in the world. It was passed on 26 Nov 1949 by the 'The Constituent Assembly' and is fully applicable since 26 Jan 1950. The Constituent Assembly had been elected for undivided India and held its first sitting on 9th Dec.1946, re-assembled on the 14th August 1947, as The Sovereign Constituent Assembly for the dominion of India The constitution of India draws extensively from Western legal traditions in its outline of the principles of liberal democracy. It follows a British parliamentary pattern with a lower and upper house. It embodies some Fundamental Rights which are similar to the Bill of Rights declared by the United States constitution. It also borrows the concept of a Supreme Court from the US. India is a federal system in which residual powers of legislation remain with the central government, similar to that in Canada. The constitution provides detailed lists dividing up powers between central and state governments as in Australia, and it elaborates a set of Directive Principles of State Policy as does the Irish constitution. The constitution has provision for Schedules to be added to the constitution by amendment. The ten schedules in force cover the designations of the states and union territories; the emoluments for high-level officials; forms of oaths; allocation of the number of seats in the Rajya Sabha. A review of the constitution needs at least twothirds of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to pass it. The Indian constitution is one of the most frequently amended constitutions in the world. Infact the first amendment to it was passed after only a year of the adoption of the constitution and instituted numerous minor changes. Many more amendments followed a rate of almost two amendments per year since 1950. Most of the constitution can be amended after a quorum of more than half of the members of each house in Parliament passes an amendment with a two-thirds majority vote. Articles pertaining to the distribution of legislative authority between the central and state governments must also be approved by 50 percent of the state legislatures. DRAFTING THE CONSTITUTION The Constituent Assembly, consisting of indirectly elected representatives, was set up for the purpose of drafting a constitution for India (including what are now the separate countries of Pakistan and Bangladesh). The Drafting Committee was appointed, with Dr B. R. Ambedkar as the Chairman along with six other members assisted by a constitutional advisor. These members were Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi (K M Munshi, Ex- Home Minister, Bombay), Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer (Ex- Advocate General, Madras State), N Gopalaswami Ayengar (Ex-Prime Minister, J&K and later member of Nehru Cabinet), B L Mitter (Ex-Advocate General, India),Md. Saadullah (Ex- Chief Minister of Assam, Muslim League member) and D P Khaitan (Scion of Khaitan Business family and a renowned lawyer). The constitutional advisor was Sir Benegal Narsing Rau (who became First Indian Judge in International Court of Justice, 1950–54). Later B L Mitter resigned and was replaced by Madhav Rao (Legal Advisor of Maharaja of Vadodara). Owing to death of D P Khaitan, T T Krishnamachari was chosen to be included in the drafting committee. In the event, it remained in being for almost three years, acting as the first parliament of India after independence in 1947. The Assembly was not elected on the basis of universal adult franchise; plus only Muslims and Sikhs were given special representation as "minorities". The influential Muslim League initially boycotted the Assembly after having failed to prevent its gathering. The Constituent Assembly was a one-party body in a one-party country. The Congress Party had wide diversity within itself, from conservative industrialists to radical Marxists, but party members mainly drove the process. The Assembly met for the first time in New Delhi on 9 December 1946. . In regard to its composition the members were elected by indirect election by the members of The Provisional Legislative Assemblies (lower house only). At the time of signing 284 out of 299 members of the Assembly were present. The last session of the Assembly was held on January 24, 1950. Over the course of this period (two years, eleven months and seventeen days), the Assembly held eleven sessions, sitting on a total of 165 days. The hope behind the Assembly was expressed by Jawaharlal Nehru: "The first task of this Assembly is to free India through a new constitution, to feed the starving people, and to cloth the naked masses, and to give every Indian the fullest opportunity to develop himself according to his capacity." Text of The Constitution: Preamble We, The people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens: JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do hereby Adopt, Enact and give ourselves this Constitution. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family. One day when her son was in elementary school his mom came to say hello to her child. He was so embarrassed. He felt how could she do this to him? He ignored her and he threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of his classmates said your mom has only one eye? He just felt to bury himself and he also wanted his mom to disappear. He confronted her that day and said, If you are only want to make me laughing stock why don’t you just die? His mom did not respond…He did not even stop to think for a second about what he had said because as he was in full of angry. He was oblivious to her feelings. He wanted to leave that house as he was nothing to do with her. So he Studied real and hard and got a chance to go abroad to study. Then he got married he bought a house of his own. He had kids. He was happy with his life his kids and the comforts. Then one day his mother came to visit him. She hadn’t seen him in years and didn’t even meet her grand children. When she stood by the door, his children laughed at her and he yelled at her for coming over uninvited. He screamed at her’ How dare you to come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE ! NOW!! And to this ,his mother quietly answered oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten to wrong address, and she disappeared out of sight. One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to his house ,so he lied to his wife that he was going to business trip. After the reunion he went to his mother just out of curiosity. His neighbor said that she died. He didn’t shed even a single tear. They handed him a letter which his mother wanted him to have. My dearest son, I think of you all the time. I’m sorry that I came to your house and scared your children. I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion .But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you .I’m Sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up. You see…. When you were a small boy ,you met with an accident and lost one eye .As a Mother, couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with one eye. So I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me in my place with that eye with all my love to you. Your Mother Then this son started shedding tears by thinking of his Mother’s love on him. QUOTE : A mother loves his children even when they least deserve to be loved .If you have parents treat them care, because you never knows there value until you see their empty chair Our parents have strong feeling inside their heart, just saved for us, you may wonder what it is but it’s their love for you. Divinity In Purity :(Mother)-by Lohit Vamaraju A person carrying true love, No signs and marks of defects, Negligence and arrogance, neither of these evils can be found in this person of divinity. With softeners, she moulds a situation, Even a chaos when goes into her hands, just for a few moments I may see, But never again ,as she feels I’d be hurt. The best soul sent by the Heavens, changing into a white bird when I’m tensed, and then ,cheers me up showing a rainbow, So, never after I tried to hate her. Beauty is the love which she sprinkles, For the beauty of my life, she struggled, Lots of unnecessary remarks, she suffered, Her every tear is flooding away me from getting lonely. Let me be her custodian through all my heart, I’m going to carry a life time promise, It’s not a load of responsibilities, “My every breath will work for you”, this is for sure .
