Many of you may recall that during
the High Holy Days I announced
that Beth El will be traveling to
Israel this summer. As Jews, our
connection to the Land, State, and
People of Israel is strong and eternal, and there is no better way to
show common cause with our
Israeli brothers and sisters than to

visit them in our ancestral homeRabbi
land. Additionally, Israel is a land
of vast history and everyone would both benefit and
enjoy visiting a land which is both an ancient wonder
and a modern miracle. When you travel the Holy
Land, in the span of a few minutes you can see an archeological dig that unearthed evidence of Jewish civilization thousands of years ago and then pass a world class
teaching hospital or a state of the art semi-conductor
facility. Israel is a wonderful and magical place that will
connect visitors with one another, with our history, our
heritage, and with a marvelous, democratic and independent Jewish State.
Summer is not that far away, and it’s now time to start
planning for Beth El’s Israel Adventure from July 5 –
July 16, 2014. We have secured the services of David
(“Dudu”) Cohen, one of Israel’s finest tour guides. I
have known Dudu for forty years when we were both
students at the Hebrew University and lived in the same
dorm in Jerusalem. Even back then, he would lead
tours for rabbinical students who were amazed by his
encyclopedic knowledge of Israel’s history, geography,
archaeology and everything that had to do with Eretz
Yisrael. Several years ago when I returned to Israel with
Debbi, my sister, brother-in-law, and niece, we engaged
Dudu as our guide in Jerusalem’s city of David and
Petra, Jordan. (Our past president Ben Cooper and his
family also hired Dudu to be their private tour guide not
long ago.) A lifelong student, Dudu recently earned his
doctorate in Bible from the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem. I promise everyone who joins us an experience of a lifetime!
Enclosed, in this issue of the echo, you will find a flyer
for our upcoming Israel Adventure. You will notice that
in addition to the “package price” which includes airfare
and the land package (tours, hotels, most meals, etc.),
there is also an option for “land package only” which is
ideal for people who have amassed many airline or credit card points. Since airfare prices have skyrocketed,
using “points” can make such a trip much more economical.
I hope that all Beth El members, especially those who

have never been to Israel before, will give serious consideration to joining us on our congregational pilgrimage
to Israel. We hope to attract travelers of all ages. Bring
your friends, neighbors, your brothers or sisters, singles,
married, with or without children, Jewish or not Jewish.
This is precisely the adventure that will inspire you,
enhance your appreciation of your faith and your people, and draw you closer to one another.
In addition to our extensive touring, there will also be
time to explore Israel on your own. Furthermore, if you
wish to extend your stay to do additional traveling or to
visit with friends or relatives, our tour agency, Israel
Tour Connection, will do everything in their power to
accommodate your needs and your wants. ITC provides more synagogue congregational tours than just
about anyone else in the industry and their expertise
and connections insure that all of their clients are well
served.

“It Takes A Village”
This phrase has become commonplace since Hillary Clinton published
her book of the same name in 1996.
The story actually originates from an

parents, its upbringing belongs to the
community. Even though this phrase refers to the raising of a child, I believe with a stretch of the imagination,
we can compare this to our community at Beth El.
Let us assume Beth El is the village. The “biological”
parents of our “village” are our staff, from Rabbi
Lavinsky to the janitorial staff. They work many hours
every day to make sure that everything runs smoothly,
seven days a week. You are the members of our village.
We count on you to help support our congregation.
Many of you support us generously with monetary donations, and other donations that we ask for during the
year. Many of you give so generously of your time by volunteering in a variety of different ways at Beth El.
We would love to have more “villagers,” like you, participate by volunteering. We really need your help. Our
staff have full-time jobs running the day-to-day operations and are so grateful to have an extra pair of hands to
help them co-ordinate and execute the many additional
programs and services that we offer.
Please contact me or the synagogue office directly if you
would like to jump in and help with any of the following:
help at the front desk, prepare Kiddush lunches on
Friday mornings, do weekly shopping, volunteer in our
Preschool (read to the children, help teachers, help in
the office/library/garden etc.), fundraising and social programs (Photo Exhibit, Gala event, Purim Carnival, Men’s
Club, Women’s Group etc.), reading the Torah on
Saturday mornings, and attending Minyan. Please let me
know if you have an interest in starting something new or
reviving something old. I’d love to hear from you.
Our Youth Department is setting a very good example
twice a month by volunteering their time running two
excellent programs that serve our community: Junior
Congregation and Cafe Kehilla. You can help by supporting their efforts and keep their programs running.
It is January of a brand new year and we often associate
this with New Year resolutions. We have two “New
Years,” so if you didn’t follow through with your Jewish
New Year resolutions, you have a second chance! Make
a resolution to be an active part of Beth El. Your participation in whatever way you can, will help this village of
ours grow and flourish.

We have precious treasures within
our Beth El community, our congregants, and I’m delighted to say that
this year we have added many more.
Our membership has increased by
39 plus member families, and with
the ebb and flow of our congregation, this year has been as good, if

years at Beth El. I welcome each
and every one of you, whether you’ve been a part of our
congregational family for a few months or for many years.
With this charged energy, there has been talk of reviving
both the Men’s Club and the Women’s League (some call
it Sisterhood), both of which we would love to see happen
within our community.
I’m sure most of you know that typically the women’s
group is affiliated with the Women’s League for
Conservative Judaism. It has been the place where lifelong bonds of friendship are formed as well as good
times, and the women gain the satisfaction of knowing that
their membership supports the synagogue in so many
ways. They foster Jewish education by sponsoring
informative programs, support a full range of “fun” fund
raising events that support the Jewish community, and get
involved in national projects as well.
The Federation of Men’s Club mission “is to involve
Jewish Men in Jewish life by building and strengthening
Men’s Clubs in the Conservative/Masorti Movement.”
Along with the friendship of other Jewish Men, the organization “mentors leaders at the club, region and international level, develops programming that better connects
people of all ages to the Jewish community, and builds
community by forming meaningful long-lasting relationships based on camaraderie, common interests and core
values.”
Please, let’s talk this up! All it takes is commitment, some
time and energy. As in Nike’s motto…..let’s “Just do it!”

Bar Mitzvah
Benjamin Isaac Ulan, son of Gail and
Paul Ulan, will become a Bar Mitzvah
with honors on Saturday, January 17th,
2015.
Grandparents are Nick Gregos and
Marcia Gregos (of blessed memory),
and Sylvia Ulan and Leon Ulan (of blessed memory).
Ben has older siblings, Emily and Sam, and a younger
brother, Michael.
Ben is a student in the REACH program at Madison No.
1 Middle School. He enjoys music, bowling, cooking,
photography and Arizona Cardinals football. Ben is an
excellent babysitter and has helped out at home with his
younger brother, and also at Camp Yad B'Yad last summer before going off to Camp Ramah.
Ben enjoys donating his time to various causes and
events and he has participated in charitable activities
such as volunteering at the Desert Mission Food Bank,
riding in the Tour de Cure (to raise money and awareness for Diabetes research), and running the Undy 5000
(to raise money to eradicate colon cancer). He also volunteers as a math tutor after school at Madison No.1.
Ben’s current mitzvah project is raising money to buy
iPods for the Music and Memory program (http://musicandmemory.org). A program that helps elders in care
facilities suffering from a wide range of cognitive and
physical challenges find renewed meaning and connection in their lives through the gift of personalized music.
Ben saw a screening of the movie, Alive Inside, “a joyous
cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken
our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity,” and chose to support the effort (go to

Let me start by wishing all of you a Happy
New Year. May 2015 bring you nothing
but joy, happiness and good health. Let
me also remind you of the “other” New
Year that is right around the corner, Tu
B’Shevat, the New Year of the trees. The

It is the time of year when children all over Israel begin to
plant trees. In most of North America, it’s still a little too
cool for that so we plant indoors. If you are lucky enough to
live here in Arizona, outdoor planting may be a possibility.
Our Talmud Torah is actually looking at the possibility of
doing just this as we gather together on a warm Sunday
morning to remind ourselves of how Tu B’Shevat reminds
us that it is our responsibility to take care of the earth.
Our school Tu B’Shevat Seder, an event in which we will
offer tastes of various fruits native to Israel, is also on the calendar. Almonds, figs, carrots, and dates are just a few of the
favorites that will be on the “menu” for the day.
Planting a tree in Israel through the Jewish National Fund is
a wonderful way to honor someone or pay tribute in a loved
one’s memory. You might also wish to consider planting
seeds at home with your family. Parsley is fast growing and
works well on your Passover Seder plates.
Below is a family favorite recipe that my Bubbie made every
Tu B’Shevat, The Israeli Date Cake. Please enjoy…
Ingredients:
½ cup boiling water
1 pound chopped dates
2 cups chopped pecans or walnuts
1 cup sugar
2 tbs. butter
2 eggs
3 ½ cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
½ cup carob or cocoa powder
2 tsp. vanilla
Dash of cinnamon
Directions
1. In a large bowl, pour boiling water over chopped dates
2. Add nuts, sugar and butter
3. Beat eggs slightly and add to other ingredients
4. In a spate bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and carob or
cocoa powder
5. Add to wet mixture
6. Add vanilla and cinnamon and mix well
7. Bake in a lightly greased 9x13 pan at 350 degrees for one
hour - do not overcook. Allow to cool before serving. Dust
with powdered sugar.

growing our USY family. If you
haven’t already, come check out our
Cafe Kehillah, where we bake fresh
goods for our community and spend time with our families, on Sunday January 11th from 8:30-9:30am. The
day before, we also have our Junior Congregation,
which is growing and is better and better thanks to all of
your amazing kids. Please encourage them to come
participate in a service tailored just for them on
Saturday, January 10th. With our focus on family we
also want to encourage all our families to support each
other by being a part of their simchas (celebrations) as
well. Ben Ulan’s bar mitzvah is January 17th. Ben is a
huge part of our USY family and we can’t wait to support him on this day! USY really does create a great
sense of “bond” within the kids and we want to continue to foster that in every action that we do with them.

Hadashot from the Beth El Preschool
Our secular calendar is coming to a close and
as I think about the many things that have
happened over this past year, one of my
favorite experiences is moving to Arizona
and meeting the Beth El Family. It is incredible how quickly time flies. Each day I am

children continue to grow and be excited
about the learning opportunities we provide
at the Beth El Preschool. Stop - - take a few minutes out of your
day and look at the world through the eyes of a child then you can
feel how I do each day.
Ella’s Thanksgiving Turkey
My favorite each day is spending time with the children. I was sitting with a group of children as they experienced the texture of
“gak.” Simply by adding water to corn starch the texture changed
into clay like material. How amazed the children were to see the
two materials combine together. We spent time talking about this
material, playing with it, using a variety of kitchen tools and exploring the texture. It is important that we also keep this awe and
amazement in our everyday lives.
During the month of January our theme will be community. We
will be honoring Martin Luther King Day on January 19th and
remembering how some of the Rabbis marched with MLK for a
just cause. Toward the end of the month we will have Parent
Conferences for our 2’s – Pre-K classes. School will be closed
from 9:00 -12:00 for those classes, with a babysitting option during
conferences. Please be sure to make the appropriate arrangements.

BLANKET
BOOSTERS
Many of you have seen Blanket
Boosters listed on the calendar
and in the weekly Shabbat flyer
and do not know what this group does. Beth El
Blanket Boosters was started by a group of women
in 2001. We have been meeting in the lobby of our
synagogue on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every
month except in the summer or when Talmud
Torah is not in session. Since our inception, we
have knitted or crocheted over 1500 blankets for
children that either have been abused or removed
from their home for one reason or another. Some
of the places we have donated these blankets to are:
The Phoenix Police Department, Phoenix
Children's Hospital, a women's shelter, The United
Way and we have even sent blankets to Israel.
We are a completely self-supporting group. We
have raised money by having raffles, selling completed blankets, and by donations. We supply all materials (yarn & needles) to make these blankets. Some
women (and even some men) only "work" at home
and bring us the completed blankets. Some of us do
come to Beth El and we spend the morning just kibbitzing and sharing our personal stories. We would
love to have more of you join us even if you do not
stay the entire time. We are there from 9:00 a.m.
until noon. If you have any questions, please feel
