Building Pride
Dear Friends,
Over the last several weeks, I spent some time reflecting on our accomplishments in 2007 and a theme began to
emerge. It is best captured by the word “pride.” I see pride come to life in the eyes of every patient, family and visitor
when they see the world-class American Family Children’s Hospital for the first time. Together, we achieved our dream of
building this amazing, award-winning facility in 2007, and we could not have done it without your unyielding support.
I am proud to be a member of such a caring and generous community—one that appreciates the needs of children and
families enough to give its time and money toward the creation of a hospital unlike anything seen before in the region.
The generosity of our community—which spans the entire state of Wisconsin—reflects a giving culture that values every
child from the small to the tall. When school kids bring in their piggy banks, lemonade sale proceeds or dedicate their
birthday gifts to the children’s hospital, one cannot help but feel an enormous sense of pride.
I am also proud of our staff that tirelessly comes to work every day to provide the very best care for our children. I am
blessed to work with a large group of professionals who are so completely committed to our mission.
Last but certainly not least, I am proud of our patients and their families who fight every day to overcome the enormous
challenges that life has put before them. They not only fight to heal themselves but, in so doing, find the time and
energy to care about others who have to face similar or other obstacles. We value their advocacy and encourage them
to continue to speak up and improve the care and service we provide at the American Family Children’s Hospital. I am
pleased to share the stories of just a few of our patients with you in this 2007 Annual Report. Every child that enters our
doors touches our hearts, and I believe these stories will touch yours.

After A life-threatening car crash
Kade loves life on the farm
W
atching 10-year-old Kade Vance putter around the family
farm, one almost sees a Norman Rockwell painting come
to life. Kade was born to roam the farm, and it is hard to
imagine him growing up in any other environment.
A week before his 7th birthday, however, Kade’s life hung in the
balance after being gravely injured in a horrible car crash along
with his sister, Karsen, and their dad, Dave. On a drizzly, November
afternoon in 2004, Dave was driving the two kids from their rural
Delavan farm to Janesville in search of a birthday present for their
mom, Jill.
Just before reaching a hilly, obstructed intersection, another driver
heading south at 70 mph came out of nowhere, blew through the
stop sign and smashed straight into the Vance’s car.

Immediately after the Vance’s car turned end-over-end repeatedly,
Kade was thrown about 40 feet from the vehicle. Dave and Karsen,
who also would sustain severe injuries, remained in the car before it
finally came to a stop.
After an initial stop at Mercy Hospital in Janesville, Kade was rushed
by ambulance to what is now the American Family Children’s
Hospital in Madison.
“I was convinced he was going to die on the way to Madison,”
recalls Jill. “When we got there, I remember someone sat me down
and shut the door. I said, ‘You don’t have to shut the door to tell me
that he died.’”
Kade refused to succumb, however. A few hours later, Pediatric
Trauma Coordinator Lynne Sears, RN, MS, put her hands on Jill’s
shoulders and looked her straight in the eye.
“He is not going to die!”
Not quite sure if she could believe Sears’ assurance, Jill told herself
she could handle any outcome short of planning her son’s funeral.
Kade’s injury report was truly numbing: a severe closed head injury,
bruising in his lungs and liver, facial lacerations and a neck injury. He
was on life support for the first two weeks. Slowly, Kade began to
understand what he heard, but it would be months before he could
speak or eat food by mouth. He would not start walking again until
last summer—some 30 months after the crash.
Supported by an incredibly strong family and Children’s Hospital
specialists in trauma, neurosurgery, physical/occupational/speech
therapies and rehabilitation services, Kade has made an amazing
recovery.
“Kade has come a long way from those first weeks and continues to
improve,” Sears says. “He is truly a miracle boy who brings so much
joy to everyone.”
Kade’s mom, Jill, agrees.
“Despite everything,” she says, “we have been very fortunate. It
has also made us better people because we don’t take things for
granted.”
New program eases
stress for children in
the E.R.
Michael Kim, MD, is passionate
about kids. Hired in October 2007
as Director of UW Health Pediatric
Emergency Medicine, Dr. Kim is
the first American Family Children’s
Hospital physician who is trained and
board certified in pediatric emergency
medicine.
“We see about 7,000 children a year
in our Emergency Department,” Kim
says. “With specialists on staff trained
in pediatric emergency medicine, we
can ease some of the distress that
any child or family encounters by
coming through the E.R. doors.”
Kim, whose research focuses on
pain management, is excited about
growing the program and anticipates
hiring additional pediatric emergency
medicine physicians in the near future.

$670,000 raised during radiothon
Hudson’s family gets new outlook
W
hen Madison’s most popular morning radio team—
Connie and Fish of Z104—began hosting the 39-hour
Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon in 2005, childhood cancer
was not something Connie or Fish had previously spent much time
thinking about.
“We both love kids, but neither of us are parents,” says Connie.
“When we started talking to these kids and their families on the air
about what they have been through and what they deal with, it really
opened our eyes—not only about childhood cancer, but about how
much Fish and I could make a difference.”
What a difference it has been! More than $670,000 was raised
from listeners during the three-day 2007 Radiothon to help support
patients and families through better clinic facilities and more pediatric
cancer research at the UW.
“It really is an awesome experience,” adds Fish. “We give everything
we have for three full days and yet Connie and I still can’t begin to
imagine what these beautiful kids and their moms, dads, brothers
and sisters go through in the hospital and at home.”
Elizabeth, her husband Andy, and Hudson spent that evening at
home, waiting.
“I remember crying in the car for those families on the
radio and just seven hours later, we became one of
those families.”

“It was 9:22 p.m. when the phone rang,” Elizabeth says. “I answered
it and our doctor said, ‘Mrs. LePine, Hudson’s blood work came
back and we think he might have leukemia. I’m sorry to tell you this
over the phone, but you need to come to the hospital right away.’”
A diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia was confirmed the
next day.
“I remember crying in the car for those families on the radio,” says
Elizabeth, “and just seven hours later, we became one of those
families.”
Consider the story of one mom, Elizabeth LePine of Sun Prairie.
Hudson’s cancer treatment will continue until 2009, when he begins
kindergarten. He also has received extensive treatment for a blood
clot on his brain. Despite it all, his prognosis is good.
“My 3-year-old son, Hudson, had fractured his leg in early April
2006,” Elizabeth remembers. “A few weeks later, a fever started
coming and going, which was followed by an ear infection. Another
week passed, and he suddenly started tripping in the yard and not
putting any weight on his leg.
“Hudson has been through a lot, but he has made an excellent
recovery and is doing well,” says Kenneth De Santes, MD, Hudson’s
UW Health oncologist. “He is a very sweet and smart little boy and
has been a pleasure to care for.”
“That afternoon,” she says, “I’m driving Hudson to the clinic, with the
Z104 Radiothon on in the car. They repeated X-rays and blood tests,
which just one month earlier had seemed to rule out cancer.”
Kristina’s star shines
forever
When 9-year-old Kristina Schultz of
Marshall, Wisconsin, passed away in
April 2007 following a six-year fight
with leukemia, Z104’s Connie and
Fish knew right away what had to
be done.
“Fish and I fell in love with Kristina
and her family when we first met
the Schultzes back in 2005,” says
Connie. “When she passed away just
a month before last year’s Radiothon,
there was no choice but to dedicate
the 2007 Radiothon to Kristina.”
Despite undergoing two bone marrow
transplants, years of chemotherapy
and more hospitalizations than
anyone could remember, Kristina’s
focus was always on others.
“She wanted to use her experience
in ways that would help heal other
people,” says her dad, Daryl. “In
2006, for example, she helped launch
Caps for the Cure, a program that
raised money for the hospital by
allowing fellow students the right to
wear a hat to school for one dollar.
Nearly $14,000 was raised, and
all of the proceeds supported her
fellow childhood cancer patients and
families.”

“She can’t stop moving!”
Josselin puts the fun in fitness
A
ngelica Ceballos of Madison beams with pride as she chats
up a visitor about her once sedentary, but now very active
7-year-old daughter Josselin.
“She used to eat a lot of cookies,” Angelica says in Spanish while
watching Josselin chase a soccer ball around a Madison school
yard. “Now, she eats fruits and vegetables and can’t stop moving!
She plays soccer, runs, dances—and she doesn’t get tired. She also
has more confidence.”
One of more than 400 patients who attends the UW Health Pediatric
Fitness Clinic on Madison’s West Side, Josselin illustrates how much
progress a child can make toward achieving a healthier lifestyle.
“Josselin is a wonderful child who really has fun while becoming
more fit,” says Sue Peterson, MS, exercise physiologist. “She also
has a very committed family that is so proud of her. With more
activity and a healthier diet, she has grown taller while maintaining
her weight.”
Aaron Carrel, MD, a UW Health pediatric endocrinologist and
medical director of the Pediatric Fitness Clinic, says Josselin is one
example of what the clinic can do for children who might be at risk of
becoming overweight as they grow into adulthood.
“There are all kinds of kids like Josselin who just need a little direction
to help achieve a healthier lifestyle,” Carrel says. “She has really
found the fun in fitness, and her family’s support is truly invaluable.”
A leading national researcher in pediatric fitness, Carrel was not
willing to stand idly by and watch a generation of children reach
epidemic proportions of obesity.
“It is no exaggeration to call this a crisis,” Carrel says. “We have
25 million kids in this country who are either obese or overweight. If
we don’t turn these kids around, we will have staggering numbers of
young adults at great risk of heart disease or type 2 diabetes.”
As the primary investigator of a published study that linked improved
cardiovascular fitness and greater insulin sensitivity to a lifestyle
approach to physical education, Carrel believes there are plenty of
ways to recapture kids who have been turned off by traditional gym
classes.
“She has really found the fun in fitness, and her
family’s support is truly invaluable.”

“We all remember the boys and girls who never got picked for team
sports,” Carrel says. “Our study demonstrated that individual life
sports such as bicycling, walking or snowshoeing can strike a chord
with kids who otherwise might tune out and become serious risks for
irreversible obesity.”
Carrel and his team are now working with the Wisconsin Department
of Public Instruction and local school districts in hopes of measuring
students’ fitness and introducing a lifestyle approach to physical
education.
“Schools are clearly the best place to try and reach kids,” Carrel
says. “It is incredibly fulfilling to get them hooked on fitness before
they graduate into the adult world, where old habits die hard.”
Pediatric fitness clinic
expansion eyed
Getting kids hooked on fitness
requires more than desire. It also
means having the physical space to
support a state-of-the-art pediatric
fitness clinic with growing demand.
“We are thrilled to be serving
more kids and families,” says
Paul Montague, coordinator for
the Wisconsin Pediatric Fitness
Initiative, “but we have a critical
need for additional clinic space, a
new children’s fitness center, and a
pediatric exercise laboratory.”
Accordingly, a $1.6 million fundraising
campaign has been launched to
expand the existing Pediatric Fitness
Clinic facility, allowing for increased
programming and capacity. More

Jay tackles cancer one yard at a time
UW Coach Bielema among his biggest fans
J
ay Haraldson of Sun Prairie may have only been 5 years old
when cancer entered his life, but he was quite certain of one
thing: his tumor might visit, but it would not stay.
“Jay loves life and loves the Badgers,” Bielema says. “He just keeps
moving forward.”
Not long after being diagnosed in 2001 with a soft-tissue cancer
on his jaw known as rhabdomyosarcoma, Jay was waiting with his
mother, Sharon, to have a CT scan when he noticed a little girl who
had two noticeable lumps on her jaw.
Indeed, moving forward is something Jay does better than many
around him. Only one hour after being infused with chemotherapy,
Jay surprised his dad, Joel, by walking the entire 1.5-mile trip back
from Camp Randall Stadium to the Children’s Hospital following a
football game in 2006.
“I have one bump and look, Mom, she has two bumps,” Jay said
rather matter-of-factly. “I just know they’re going to get better by our
birthdays.”
“Jay loves life and loves the Badgers. He just keeps
moving forward.”
Despite a recurrence of his disease in the spring of 2006 just
before turning 11, Jay is now 12 and doing well following surgery,
chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
While many would visit Jay during his frequent hospital stays at the
American Family Children’s Hospital, one rather tall fellow made
quite an impression on Jay—UW Badgers Head Football Coach Bret
Bielema.
“I just walked into a big smile and it never left,” Bielema says about
his first visit to Jay’s hospital room.
Since then, Jay and Bret have developed a special bond. For weeks,
Jay kept a photo from Bret’s visit next to his hospital bed. Bret, in
turn, keeps a special place in his heart for Jay, asking the young
Badger fan how his siblings are doing before the two pose for
photos at Camp Randall Stadium.

There was also the time when his UW Health pediatric oncologist,
Diane Puccetti, MD, asked Jay if he wanted some company while
they both ran the 5K Suzy Favor Hamilton Run/Walk for Capital
Candlelighters, an organization that provides support for childhood
cancer patients and families.
“I thought it might be fun if we ran together, but he took off like a
jackrabbit,” Puccetti says. “I remember seeing him way ahead of me
only to turn around and yell, ‘Only a mile left!’”
Like many hospitalized children, Jay inspires so many through his
resiliency and thoughtfulness.
“Kids don’t know that they’re supposed to feel bad,” says Joel. “Jay
tells me so many times, ‘Dad, a lot of kids have it worse than I do.’”

patients and families who have
participated.

Bound and determined
Muscle disease no obstacle to Samantha
S
amantha Ceplina has had her heart set on a career in
healthcare ever since childhood.
Samantha’s mother, Kristine Ceplina, remembers how relieved she
was once Samantha was finally diagnosed after years of uncertainty.
“First I wanted to be a doctor, then it was a surgeon, then a
pathologist,” says the 19-year-old Stevens Point native who is now a
sophomore at picturesque Edgewood College in Madison.
“Samantha crawled and walked a bit late and she never ran very
much, but it took until she was six before she was diagnosed with
SMA at UW Children’s Hospital. Once we knew, it was a lot easier
for all of us to move on. We never treated Samantha any differently,
and never told her there was anything she couldn’t do.”
With some help from her mother, Kristine, Samantha discovered
what appears to be the perfect field: cytotechnology—the
microscopic study of cells for evidence of disease.
“I want to work in a hospital lab,” Samantha says. “Edgewood
College has a great program in this field, and I just love it here.”
With Grandma and Grandpa (Michele and Donald Last) living near
campus, Samantha is thankful for the many warm meals, rides and
laundry service.
A strikingly beautiful, good-humored, and determined young woman,
Samantha could have easily viewed her life as the proverbial halfempty glass. Diagnosed at age 6 with spinal muscular atrophy
(SMA), Samantha has not been able to walk for the past six years. Of
course, she has no time for what others might view as obstacles.
“SMA is something I have,” she says, “but I have never let it define
me. It has never changed what I have wanted to do.”
Deborah McLeish, MD, a UW Health pediatric specialist in
neuromuscular diseases, has treated Samantha for the past
13 years.
“Samantha’s form of SMA—Type 3—is the least aggressive form of
the disease,” says McLeish. “It results in a weakening of muscles—
usually affecting the legs more than the arms, but can affect the
breathing muscles as well.”
“SMA is something I have, but I have never let it
define me. It has never changed what I have wanted
to do.”

The older sister of Colton, 17, and twins Tad and Emma, 13,
Samantha was a high school senior when she met a young marine
on the Internet named Chris Przybylski—also from Stevens Point.
“We never knew each other from home,” Samantha says. “He was
a little older and went to another high school. He added me as a
‘friend’ on his myspace.com page and soon we started going out.”
On Christmas Eve 2006, Chris proposed to Samantha and she said
yes. While they both plan to finish school before getting married
(Chris, 22, is now in the Police Science program at Madison Area
Technical College), both are very excited about their future together.
“Chris is very good to her,” says Kristine. “He will make her very
happy.”
Pediatric specialty care
from A to Z
Fortunately, most patients who come
to the American Family Children’s
Hospital never spend the night. More
than 30,000 patient appointments
occur each year in the Pediatric
Specialty Clinics located on Level 2.
From cardiology to cancer, pediatric
specialists and staff see children in
this beautiful space that features 35
exam rooms, two spacious waiting
areas, teaching space, special
procedure rooms, radiology and
rehabilitation areas.
In September 2007, this space was
named the George A. Fait Family
Pediatric Specialty Clinics in honor of
a $3 million gift from Mr. Fait, a retired
insurance company president from
Middleton.
“Contributing to this world-class
children’s hospital is both an honor
and a privilege,” says Mr. Fait. “The
new facility will be a beneficial legacy
to all of the children and families that
pass through its doors.”

Opening
the Gift
in 2007!
After years of dreaming, planning,
fundraising and building, the American
Family Children’s Hospital finally
opened its doors in 2007. A four-day
grand opening weekend of festivities
in late July—including a formal
dedication—was followed by the
actual patient move and clinic opening
in late August.
More than 8,600 people attended
at least one of the grand opening
events, with everyone marveling at
the new hospital. From the pure fun
of the Main Lobby “Town Square,” to
the twice-as-big inpatient rooms, to
the soothing colors that emanate from
every wall and floor, this is one place
any family would want to be if their
child is hospitalized.
“I have seen many grand openings
in Madison, but I have never seen
so many jaws drop,” says John
Flad, chair of the American Family
Children’s Hospital Advisory Board
and president of Flad Development
Corporation. “We all know that the
quality of care was never in question
at the old UW Children’s Hospital, but
the rooms were quite small and the
place was looking very tired.
“With so many worthwhile causes
in this community,” Flad says, “I am
so proud of what we accomplished
here for hospitalized kids and their
families. Whether you are a parent or
grandparent, your child may need this
hospital at the drop of a hat. Now,
if it ever happens, your family will
be in one of the nation’s very finest
children’s hospitals.”
