Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. During some Ash Wednesday services, the minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers. The Bible does not mention Ash Wednesday or the custom of Lent, however, the practice of repentance and mourning in ashes is found in 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1; Job 2:8; Daniel 9:3; and Matthew 11:21. I use to love Michigan winters, but as I have grown older, I am not so enchanted with them. I usually find myself grumbling and complaining from the tine I have to cover my bike in the late fall until I am able to saddle up again in the spring. February is often the longest month of the year for me! However, I made a change this year. Not in location to a sunnier climate, but in choosing to have a sunnier attitude regarding winter. I made a decision not to complain about winter- and this after hearing that this "And whatever you winter was supposed to be worse than last year! Ya know what? whether in It's working!! Here we are on the brink of February and I have do, word or deed, do it been able to take this winter in stride. all in the name of It certainly helps that we have not had the snow that I though we might have, and it seems (at least to me) that we have had an the Lord Jesus, unusual amount of sun these last few months when our Michi- giving thanks to gan skies are usually grey and gloomy. But I am convinced that God the Father my intentional action toward not complaining about it has made through him." the biggest difference. Pastor, teacher and leadership expert John -Col. 3.17 Maxwell has often said, "Attitude determines your altitude." If you want to soar, it starts with your attitude. Paul tells his readers in Colossians that in everything action, thought and word, we should have an "attitude of gratitude." He says we are to give thanks to God doing all that we in the name of Jesus Christ. It's pretty hard tp complain in Christ's name isn't it? Despite the hardships we face, we can always find things to be thankful for. In fact, we are even told be thankful FOR our hardships, knowing it strengthens our resolve and faith. Want to know something's I am thankful for? Here's just a short list: The wonderful community of faith i have the blessing to serve. New people God has brought into my life to love beyond measure and to be loved by them in return. My family. Sunshine! (Today is gorgeous!) A beautiful home where friends are received regularly. That February is upon us that means riding season is close at hand! What are YOU thankful for? Make a list! It's easy to find reasons to complain. It's easy to have a negative attitude. But what's that get you? In all things GIVE THANKS! Take a moment right now and give thanks to God for three things.
