St. Mart o in f Tours Academy Saint Martin of Tours Academy CONNECTED Parent Newsletter • February 12, 2015 MISSION STATEMENT St. Martin of Tours Academy, in partnership with parents, is a Catholic parish elementary school that prepares students to be lifelong learners through a curriculum that has a strong moral, spiritual, and academic foundation. Students understand the need for peace and justice, and as responsible Catholics, are challenged to answer the call to service and become engaged citizens of the world. Dear Parents, Today, we begin our twenty-fourth annual Walkathon campaign. The event itself is a highlight of each school year and an occasion when we can clearly see the spirit, teamwork, and cooperation that typifies this community. This year’s Walkathon promises to be as exciting and successful as in past years. Our chairperson, Tracy Giordano, has been working hard to make this year’s event even better. We will once again enjoy the beautiful scenery and facilities at Santee Lakes. Besides being an occasion to gather and celebrate as a community, Walkathons have a record of being successful fundraisers. Last year we were able to add a new concrete play area, order large microscopes and keep our technology up-to-date. This year we will use the funds from Walkathon 2015 to update our school’s website, purchase a 10-pack of iPads for the classrooms and replace out-dated docu-cameras. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to fund these projects. I encourage you to get involved; most importantly, to send out the donation request letters to relatives, neighbors, friends and businesses. A separate Walkathon envelope is enclosed with form letters, envelopes and directions. Thank you in advance for your spirit and support for this very important fundraiser. The school’s goal is $20,000. We hope to have 100% participation to reach our goal. Teachers will also be explaining to the students about this worthwhile and fun event. Our t-shirt color will be lime green. (The staff voted on the color.) The idea for our t-shirt logo was created by one of our eighth grade students, Sarah Pearson. We thank Tracy Giordano for chairing this large event and also Lee Ann Iagmin for the record keeping, Reina Castro for organizing the lunches and Tiffani Fleming for the design of our donation request letters that we are using. If you would like to order a Walkathon “Paint a Bright Future” adult t-shirt, the order form is enclosed. The order is due Friday, 2/20 with payment of $10.00 each. Please note: a Walkathon t-shirt has already been ordered for every student. They will receive it when at least 5 donation letters are turned in to the office for mailing. If you would like to volunteer for the Walkathon please complete and return the form in the packet with your letters. New this year is the opportunity for your child to begin basketball in the 3rd and 4th grades. Depending on the number of participants, we will have either an all boys or girls team or mixed. A coach is needed. Please contact Michael Mains at mmains@ stmartinacademy.org if you would like to volunteer. Basketball games begin on March 7. Page 1 of 2 The Lenten Season At St. Martin’s This Lent our school and parish will participate in the CRS Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that will help us experience Lenten spirituality by living in solidarity with people in need around the world. Every student will receive a CRS Rice Bowl after the blessing of the bowls during Ash Wednesday’s Mass at 8:30am. We invite all families to attend Mass. Visit crsricebowl.org for more information on the work Catholic Relief Services does around the world. We also invite you to the Parish/Academy Community Dinner next Friday. Parent, Hector Casanova is catering the dinner with his excellent fish tacos! More information on the Rice Bowl will be in next week’s parent envelope. If you plan on attending the dinner, please email the school office so we have a general idea how many are coming. ([email protected]) We hope to “Bring Lent to Life” at St. Martin’s! Please come! Thank you! The faculty and staff thank the kindergarten and first grade room parents and parents who donated the wonderful breakfast and lunch items during conference week. All of it was appreciated! There are assorted dishes that need to be claimed in the kitchen. Please come by to pick them up. SMA news Bits!
