BE MADE CLEAN
Every human person feels the need to connect with others, to
be in communion with others. No one obviously would like to
be isolated or cut off from family, friends, or the wider
community. This brings to mind the challenges that one may
face due to sickness or physical disability and the isolation
that it brings. Some people become housebound because of
a physical condition; the things they used to do to meet up
with others become practically impossible. Certain forms of
illness can be more isolating than others. In the Old
Testament, leprosy is depicted as punishment for
disobedience of God’s commands. They are considered
unclean and the requirements imposed on lepers in today’s
First Reading - rent garments, shaven head, covered beard are signs of death, penance, and mourning. So there’s more
to the story in today’s Gospel than a miraculous healing.
Jesus is revealed as far more than a great prophet - He is
God visiting His people. Only God can cure leprosy, cleanse
from sin and bring about what He wills. Jesus stretches out
His hand - as God, by His outstretched arm, performed
mighty deeds to save the Israelites. This is accompanied by
his divine word “Be made clean”. And, like God’s word in
creation “Let there be”, Jesus’ word “does” what He
commands as He continues to live and work today in the
sacraments. We make special reference today to the
Sacrament of Reconciliation where He heals our broken
relationship and our disfigured image caused by sin. On our
knees like the leper, we confess our sins to the Lord, as we
sing in today’s Psalm. Like the leper we should rejoice in the
Lord and spread the good news of His mercy. As Paul says in
today’s Epistle, we should do even the littlest things for the
glory of God and that others may be saved.
God Bless you.

MISSION, PEACE, AND DEVELOPMENT
Our MPD committee is very appreciative of the support Holy
Cross parishioners continue to show for MPD's varied
projects: food drives, Debra Dynes, African AIDS Angels, and
children’s shoes for the DR, Fair Trade, recycling and other
environmental issues. Please take a few minutes to view the
bulletin board at the back of the church for these and other
MPD efforts.
Today at church you were asked to participate in a 'reverse
offering' for next weekend's Lenten Food Drive (February
21/22). Please bring to church next weekend, a quantity of
the food item identified on the paper you chose. If that item is
not convenient, bring any non-perishable food items of your
choice.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP – IT’S ABOUT BEING
CHRISTIAN: During Mass on February 09, Pope Francis
reflected on our responsibility towards creation. He raised the
question as to how we identify those among us who have
meetings about how we may preserve creation. Do we
identify them as “the greens”? Pope Francis’ stated, “No, they
are not the greens! This is the Christian! This is our response
to the ‘first creation’ of God. And our responsibility...A
Christian who does not protect Creation, who does not let it
grow, is a Christian who does not care about the work of God,
that work that was born from the love of God for us.”
