Marijuana: myth or truth?
Education for Parents and families ~ Talk to your kids!
MYTH: Marijuana is not an addictive drug.
TRUTH: Marijuana can be addictive. Research estimates about 9% of users become addicted,
and 25-50% of daily users become addicted. Of those that start young, 1 in 6 become addicted.
MYTH: People smoked marijuana in high school 20 years ago and turned out fine. It’s not a
big deal if teens smoke it today.
TRUTH: In 2012, THC concentrations in marijuana averaged close to 15 percent, compared to
around 4 percent in the 1980s. Marijuana use is associated with a higher likelihood of dropping
out of school and going on to abuse other drugs.
MYTH: Marijuana does not have negative effects on the brain.
TRUTH: Studies show that marijuana use can cause difficulty with thinking and problem solving, and can disrupt learning and memory. When used heavily by young people, the effects on
thinking and memory can last a long time, and for some people, memory loss may be permanent. The brain is not fully developed until the age of 25 years old, especially the prefrontal
cortex, which is where impulse control and organization of emotional reactions are controlled.
MYTH: I can smoke marijuana, and it won’t affect my life.
TRUTH: Research shows marijuana users generally report lower life satisfaction than nonmarijuana using peers. Marijuana users also reported poorer mental health, more relationship
problems, and less academic success.
Of adults 26 years or older who used marijuana before age 15, 62% went on to use cocaine at some point in their lives; 9% went on to use heroin at least once, and 54% made
some nonmedical use of mind-altering prescription drugs.

THE FALLON PAIUTE-SHOSHONE TRIBE APPOINTS
NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS
A well-constructed committee
with a clear mission can make
all the difference in achieving
your program’s goals.
Many tribal members are stepping up to fill committee positions within the tribal organziation . Effective committees
don't just happen. They are
carefully planned and constructed to have a balanced
representation of members, a
clearly defined mission or objective and work plan and a
dedicated chair. The committees take a close look at issues
within their mandate and
make recommendations to the
tribal council. We would like
to thank those individuals for
making a commitment to
serve their people.

You Play a Role in Protecting Your Community
Across the nation, we're all part of communities. In cities, on farms, and in
the suburbs, we share everyday moments with our neighbors, colleagues,
family, and friends. It's easy to take for granted the routine moments in our
every day—going to work or school, the grocery store or the gas station.
But your every day is different than your neighbor’s—filled with the moments that make it uniquely yours. So if you see something you know
shouldn't be there—or someone's behavior that doesn't seem quite right—
say something. Because only you know what’s supposed to be in your everyday.
Informed, alert communities play a critical role in keeping our nation safe.
"If You See Something, Say Something” engages the public in protecting
our homeland through awareness–building, partnerships, and other outreach.

The Fallon Tribal Health Center is now offering a permanent Family Planning option for
adult men, specifically “No-Scalpel Vasectomy.”
Any adult male considering this option should schedule a Family Planning/ Vasectomy consult with Dr Eric F.
Herzog, M.D. During the consultation the procedure will be discussed, including the risks, benefits and alternatives, a brief exam, and information about what to expect during recovery from the procedure, and the necessary follow up before sterilization can be confirmed. For those who wish to proceed , the Sterilization Consent process can be initiated. The laws regarding permanent sterilization require a minimum of 30 days from
the time the consent form is signed, until the procedure can be performed. And, the procedure must be performed within 180 days of giving written consent to remain valid. Most men will need a few days of down
time before returning to light duty. Those with more physically demanding jobs will need to plan for modified
duty or additional time away before returning to regular work. Additional details will be discussed during the
consultation, and all questions will be answered. Spouses/significant others are most welcome to be included at
the initial consultation, but it is not a requirement that anyone else be present for the consultation.
Special thank you to Churchill Coalition for making the acquisition of the instruments possible by their
allocation of their Family Planning Grant resources to the Tribe.

SENIOR CENTER PROGRAM
Notice of Intent to File Application
The Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe has filed a loan/grant application with the USDA-Rural Development Community Facilities programs for the purpose of financing a food delivery truck (i.e.: Meals on Wheels) to meet
the present and future needs of the Senior Center demands of those eligible (i.e.: homebound/tribal elders) for
food delivery service within the service delivery area on the Fallon Paiute Shoshone Reservation and Colony
located in Churchill County, NV. The Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe has a federal reservation, the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Reservation, at 39°31′16″N 118°37′03″W / 39.52111°N 118.61750°W / 39.52111; -118.61750,
in Churchill County. The reservation, established in 1887, comprises 5,540 acres (22.4 km2). Closer to the city
of Fallon the smaller and geographically detached is the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Colony, at 39°29′05″N 118°
45′38″W / 39.48472°N 118.76056°W / 39.48472; -118.76056, which has two separate sections that lie between downtown Fallon and the Fallon Municipal Airport, northeast of the city. The two sites are the service
delivery locations where the food delivery truck will provide food delivery services.

Measles: Make Sure Your Child Is Fully Immunized
Measles is a highly contagious disease. It can be serious for
young children. Protect your child by making sure he or she is
up to date on vaccinations, including before traveling abroad.
Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus.
Measles starts with a fever. Soon after, it causes a cough, runny
nose, and red eyes. Then a rash of tiny, red spots breaks out. It
starts at the head and spreads to the rest of the body. Measles can
be serious for young children. It can lead to pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and death.
Measles Spreads
Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs
or sneezes. It is so contagious that if one person has it, 90% of the
people around him or her will also become infected if they are not
protected
Your child's doctor may offer the MMRV vaccine, a combination
vaccine that protects against measles, mumps, rubella, and
varicella (chickenpox). For more information contact your doctor.
