In senior care, the thought of Valentine’s Day can evoke warm and sappy memories of years past. For others the holiday may bring a sense of emptiness or sadness. With the absence of loved ones long ago lost, people may feel alone.! ! It’s my goal to fill that potential void with some valuable insight from my perspective. You are not alone. People are nice, but let’s face it; dogs make the best Valentine. ! ! Here is why: Dog slobber is acceptable. Date slobber is not. Your friends expect you to lead a dog on a leash. People frown upon that with a significant other. If your dog demands too much of your attention, you can put him/her in its crate without breaking any laws. There is no expectation of chocolate or flowers from a dog. You can actually train a dog. All you have to do is snuggle your furry friend and feel the unconditional love. So, if you’re feeling down this month, I strongly encourage you to come and hug our facility pet, Princess Holly. She is sure to shower you with tail wags and puppy kisses. Happy Valentine’s Day!! ! February 2015 4 Issue 14 February 2015 Random Acts Of Kindness… February’s Theme is Compassion Merriam-Webster defines compassion as “a feeling of wanting to help someone who is sick, hungry, in trouble, etc.” “a sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it”! “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” ! An Inspiring Story of Compassion Two boys walked down a road that led through a field. The younger of the two noticed a man toiling in the fields of his farm, his good clothes stacked neatly off to the side.! ! The boy looked at his older friend and said, “Let’s hide his shoes so when he comes from the field, he won’t be able to find them. His expression will be priceless!” ! The boy laughed.! ! The older of the two boys thought for a moment and said, “The man looks poor. See his clothes? Let’s do this instead: Let’s hide a silver dollar in each shoe and then we’ll hide in these bushes and see how he reacts to that, instead.”! – Leo Buscaglia ! The younger companion agreed to the plan and they placed a silver dollar in each shoe and hid behind the bushes. It wasn’t long before the farmer came in from the field, tired and worn. He reached down and pulled on a shoe, immediately feeling the money under his foot.! ! With the coin now between his fingers, he looked around to see who could have put it in his shoe. But no one was there. He held the dollar in his hand and stared at it in disbelief. Confused, he slid his other foot into his other shoe and felt the second coin. This time, the man was overwhelmed when he removed the second silver dollar from his shoe.! ! Thinking he was alone, he dropped to his knees and offered a verbal prayer that the boys could easily hear from their hiding place. They heard the poor farmer cry tears of relief and gratitude. He spoke of his sick wife and his boys in need of food. He expressed gratitude for this unexpected bounty from unknown hands.! ! After a time, the boys came out from their hiding place and slowly started their long walk home. They felt good inside, warm, changed somehow knowing the good they had done to a poor farmer in dire straits. A smile crept across their souls. Amethyst, the birthstone of February, is believed to possess many powers, among them, protection against intoxication. Associated with the god of wine, it was common practice to serve this beverage from amethyst goblets in the belief that this would prevent overindulgence. Amethyst is also symbolic of spirituality and piety and adorned churches and crosses.! ! February 2015 7 Issue 14 February 2015 Groundhogs - The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 to 15 pounds. Punxsutawney Phil weighs about 20 pounds and is 22 inches long. Groundhogs are covered with coarse grayish hairs (fur) tipped with brown or sometimes dull red. They have short ears, a short tail, short legs, and are surprisingly quick. Their jaws are exceptionally strong. ! A groundhog's diet consists of lots of greens, fruits, and vegetables and very little water. Most of their liquids come from dewy leaves. ! A groundhog can whistle when it is alarmed. Groundhogs also whistle in the spring when they begin courting. ! Insects do not bother groundhogs and germs pretty much leave them alone. They are resistant to the plagues that periodically wipe out large numbers of wild animals. One reason for this is their cleanliness. ! Groundhogs are one of the few animals that really hibernate. Hibernation is not just a deep sleep. It is actually a deep coma, where the body temperature drops to a few degrees above freezing, the heart barely beats, the blood scarcely flows, and breathing nearly stops. ! Young Groundhogs are usually born in mid-April or May, and by July they are able to go out on their own. The size of the litter is 4 to 9. A baby groundhog is called a kit or a cub. ! A groundhog's life span is normally 6 to 8 years. Phil receives a drink of a magical punch every summer during the Annual Groundhog Picnic, which gives him 7 more years of life. February 2015 9 Issue 14 February 2015 Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. ! ! ORIGINS OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after theThirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.! ! In the decades the followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the Civil Rights Movement and a growing awareness of black identity, Negro History Week had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses. President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”! ! February 2015 10 Issue 14 February 2015 Valentine's Day - Why St. Valentine? ! Valentine's Day comes from the Anglo-Saxon culture, and has more than five centuries of tradition.! ! Sometimes I can't help but wonder, why has the patron of epileptics and mental illness been chosen as the patron of love and lovers? Maybe because an emotional state of being in love, regardless of IQ, sometimes could resemble a mental illness?! ! Valentine's Day Magic ! A lot changed since then, but a cupid with an arrow piercing through a heart still reigns among the attributes of Valentine's Day - in the colors of gold and red.! ! Not everyone knows that this common holiday is a very good opportunity for love divination. And although most of us are too skeptical towards superstitions to rely on 'Valentine Magic', why not to have some fun, and enjoy an evening of mystery and future telling! As Blaise Pascal wrote, "The heart has its reasons, which reason does not know" - we may not believe, but it doesn't hurt to check... It doesn't make sense? Maybe. But you can't go through your life only guided by your intellect... Listen to your heart!! ! Valentine's Day Superstitions and Divination: The day before Valentine's Day place a sprig of rosemary under your pillow. Magical power of herbs will make you see the face of your future lover in your dreams.! Cut an apple in half, and count the seeds. How many are there? That's the number of children you will have. In the morning turn on the radio or TV. The first male name you hear will be the name of your future husband. Birds also have their own symbolism on Valentine's Day. If a woman sees a robin flying over her head, she will marry a fisherman. If she spots a sparrow - she will marry a farmer. Do you dream of a millionaire? You need to see a goldfinch. But if you hear a hooting owl or woodpecker tapping, turn your eyes away - unless you want to be an old maid!! ! If you are torn which man to choose, write their names on pieces of paper, and attach them to small clay balls. Throw the balls into a bowl filled with water, and wait which ball floats first to the surface. A name attached to that ball, will be the name of the man you should choose. Everyone wore bright colors, particularly yellow, and each resident who came to the party got a big yellow smiley face mug full of golden colored treats. We heard songs about sunshine and sang along to the ones we recognized. Residents worked hard solving “sun” related puzzles and overall we had a bright and lovely time. Below are Beverly Collver and Ted Tennant hugging our guest honor, Tweety Bird. “You are my sunshine, My only sunshine, You make me happy when skies are grey.
