The Transfiguration of Our Lord LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE CROSS & LUTHERAN CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER A Christian family who cares for you! THE ORDER OF DIVINE SERVICE (As derived from the Lutheran Service Book Setting Three beginning on page 184) February 15, 2015 THE PREPARATION We prepare our hearts and minds by confessing our sins and humbly turning to our God who alone is able to forgive our sins. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (II Corinthians 5:17) A REMINDER PLEASE: We honor and respect our parents and grandparents who bring your children to worship. We love for all children to learn of God’s love for them. If you find you would like to use our nursery, it is located in the old kitchen area, down the hallway to the ladies restroom. We have closed circuit TV broadcasting the service and a viewing window in that area as well. Also, please turn your cell phone to mute or to vibrate during the worship service. Thank you. A WORD TO OUR FRIENDS ABOUT COMMUNION: As members of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe that the body and blood of Christ are truly present “in, with, and under” the bread and wine when we receive the Sacrament. We do not believe that the bread and wine somehow mystically “change” into something other than bread and wine, nor do we believe that the bread and wine merely “represents” Christ’s body and blood; rather, we are bound by the words of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, when He said “Take eat, this is my body” and “Take drink, this is my blood.” We believe and teach that when we receive the bread and wine, we are also truly receiving the body and blood of Christ (because of His divine Word.) We therefore, also believe that the Sacrament of Holy Communion is more that just a memorial, we believe it is Christ truly coming to us and offering His body and his blood in an outward sign of His love for us and as an outward assurance of the forgiveness He won for us by His death on the cross. This is our belief and confession regarding the Sacrament of Holy Communion. If you are not a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and if you have any questions or concerns about our Communion practices and desire to partake of Holy Communion, will you please consult with the pastor beforehand. Having read this Communion Statement and prayerfully considered what you believe and confess, please complete the Pew Card found in the pew rack. After you place your tithes and gifts in the offering plate, please pass your Pew Card to the center aisle and the ushers will pick them up as they return from presenting our offerings to the Lord. May God truly bless our Communion Service this day. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC Alleluia! Amen. The TOLLING OF THE BELLS (The The tolling of the bells is an ancient custom that according to some is said to call upon the name of the Lord and alert the community to our call to worship. As the bells toll, we reverently prepare our hearts and minds to receive the blessings God has promised in His Word and Sacraments.) T Confess Confession and Absolution (Please stand) HYMN OF INVOCATION T O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright LSB 395 (continued) 3 (3) Lord, when You look on us in love, At once there falls from God above A ray of purest pleasure. The sign of the cross T may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P C In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. LSB pg. 184 Amen. Matthew 28:19b [18:20] P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us [Hebrews 10:22] forgiveness. P C Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8 P C I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Psalm 32:5 Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. 4 P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. [John 20:19-23] C Amen. The word “transfigure” comes from a Latin word meaning “to change form or appearance.” Scripture tells us that Jesus’ appearance changed right before His disciples’ eyes. His face became as bright as the sun, and His clothes became as white as light. T KYRIE Service of the Word Mark 10:47 GLORIA IN EXCELSIS T LSB pg. 186 Luke 2:14; John 1:29 5 6 SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY LSB pg. 189 2 Timothy 4:22 O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Be seated) The Church longs to be in the real presence of Jesus. And we are. Through Word and Sacraments, Christ’s presence is made known. We stand in the lineage of saints who have beheld the glory of God: Moses at the burning bush and Elijah swept away into heaven. Later, these two join Peter, James, and John in witnessing the radiance of Jesus, transfigured on a high mountain. All people are changed when they can truly see Jesus. 7 The Old Testament Reading for The Transfiguration of Our Lord is from Exodus, the 34th chapter. 29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the LORD had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. 34 Whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him. A C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The ANTHEM (10:15) This Is My Beloved Son He was still speaking when, behold, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them, overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, with whom I am well pleased, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him, listen to Him, listen to Him, O listen to Him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified, and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise and fear no more, rise and fear no more.” 8 The Epistle Reading is from 2 Corinthians, the 3rd and 4th chapters. 12 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, 13not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 14But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 4:1Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. 4In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. A C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Please stand) ALLELUIA AND VERSE LSB pg. 190 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 9th chapter. 9 2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. God’s holy Word teaches us: “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved” (Romans 10:10) NICENE CREED C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Mt. 26:28) P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is My blood in the new testament which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” PAX DOMINI John 20:19 12 LSB pg. 197 When we sing the Agnus Dei, "Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us," we are preaching and praying all at once. It was, after all, with these very words that John the Baptizer pointed his disciples to Jesus (John 1:29, 36). LCMS.org AGNUS DEI (Latin term means Lamb of God) John 1:29 (Be seated) DISTRIBUTION The pastor and those who assist him receive the body and blood of Christ first and then distribute them to those who come to receive, saying: Take, eat; this is the true body of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, given into death for your sins. Peter, James, and John had been transfixed by the sudden appearance of Moses and Elijah, but the Father’s voice directed the three disciples away from His servants and toward His beloved Son: “Listen to Him” (Mark 9:7). And suddenly, when the glory had faded, when the ancient fathers were gone, there remained Jesus only, heading down the mountain toward death and resurrection for our salvation. When my grandson asked me to help him put together a game that he had received for Christmas, we had to read and follow the instructions. Fortunately, the instruc instructions tions were very simple. Life, unfortunately, does not come with simple instructions. When we struggle making decisions and are searching for direction, God tells us “do not be anxious” but prayerfully bring our requests to Him. We have a God who listens and understands. . . .
