The Gregorian “I do will it. Be made clean.” February 15, 2015 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 February 15, 2015 St. Gregory the Great Mission Statement St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL – FOLLOW UP WEEKEND I want to thank all of you who responded by mail or during our in-pew solicitation last weekend to the Annual Catholic Appeal. This weekend is follow-up weekend for those of you who might have been away and were not able to make a pledge last weekend. It is my hope that we will receive a pledge from all active households in our Parish. Every pledge no matter how big or small makes a difference in supporting this very worthy cause. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. – Fr. ANNUAL FISH FRY—GOODIE TABLE The Fish Fry this year is early,—March 6th—so it’s time to start looking for our delicious “goodie” recipes. YEAR OF SACRAMENTS—ONE WORD AT A TIME Free Up “The priest absolves your sins,” the catechist tells her class of seven-year-olds. They accept it but, of course, don’t understand it. Maybe some of us older folks don’t quite get it either. The meaning behind this uncommon word is actually pretty simple. To absolve is to free up. We could use other words as well, such as to forgive, to unknot, to undo, or to release. The great grace and result of the Sacrament of Penance is that sin no longer has a hold on us. What has trapped us and tied us up is dissipated. We find ourselves freed up. And the freedom we experience is genuine freedom, not just the freedom to do whatever we want but the real freedom to be who we truly are— God’s beloved sons and daughters. Page 4 February 15, 2015 RCIA The Rite of Election/Continuing Conversion ceremony for those in the RCIA program will take place this afternoon (Sunday) at Holy Name Cathedral. Our prayerful support accompanies Alex James Frankland, St. Gregory’s RCIA candidate, who will be called and received into the final stage of preparation for the Easter sacraments. We look forward to welcoming him as a full member of the St. Gregory’s community on April 4 at our Easter Vigil. 61st U.S. NATIONAL LOURDES PILGRIMAGE The 61st U.S. National Pilgrimage to Lourdes, June 28—July 7, 2015. Reservation deadline March 15, 2015. FESTIVAL OF FORGIVENESS Pope Francis has described his vision of the Church as a field hospital in the middle of a terribly wounded world. During Lent 2015, the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago wants to bring the medicine of mercy not only to the Catholic faithful but also to anyone who stands in need of healing and forgiveness. Across two days February 27 and February 28, the Church in Chicago will offer special opportunities for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance and for prayers of healing. The Catholic faithful, especially those who have been away from the sacraments, are urgently invited to come and share in God’s mercy. We join our Holy Father and local churches throughout the world in their observance of this Festival of Forgiveness. As part of the Festival of Forgiveness, there will be 24 parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago that will be offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation for 24 hours straight beginning at noon on Friday, Feb. 27 and ending at noon on Saturday, Feb. 28. Further information about this opportunity will appear in future bulletins. Bars, Barns & Cafés WORLD PREMIERE, ICA’s 1st COMMISSION The International Chamber Artists (ICA) are ecstatic to be commissioning the world premiere of If You Travel Far Enough. We will present the full program on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 4 PM at St. Gregory the Great Church, 5535 N. Paulina, Chicago, IL 60640. This wonderful work was inspired by the photos and texts of Chicago writer Susan Licciardi. Chicago composer Eric Malmquist accepted the challenge of scoring this piece that is divided into three sections, each with four songs - bars, barns, and land. The program includes: Eric Malmquist, text by Susan Licciardi – If You Travel Far Enough - WORLD PREMIERE, ICA’s 1st COMMISSION Paul Schoenfield – Café Music Ludwig van Beethoven – String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 95, "Serioso" “This collaboration is very special not only because both the music and lyrics was composed specifically for ICA but also because the result is truly phenomenal,” says Patrick Godon, ICA Founder and Artistic Director. “While Susan Licciardi sparked the flame by writing these beautiful vignettes, Eric Malmquist has masterfully composed a colorful new work for various combinations of seven instruments with soprano. Join us for this ICA first!” ICA concerts are free with a suggested donation of $15. For more information, visit www.ICAmusic.org.
