From the Pastor February 15th, 2015 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time urrent and Upcoming Events The season of Lent begins in just a few days on February 18th – Ash Wednesday. Lent is the Church’s penitential season that is marked by increased prayer, fasting (acts of self-denial), and almsgiving, among other works of mercy. It is the immediate preparation for the celebration of our Lord’s glorious Resurrection. Although Ash Wednesday is not a day of obligation, it is a day of fast and abstinence, and many people will come to church, either for Holy Mass or for a prayer service and to receive the blessed ash derived from old, burned Palm Sunday branches. We pray that those who have been away from the Sacraments and will come to receive ashes will return to the Lord and the practice of their Faith, and that the hearts of us who do participate regularly may be converted ever more deeply to God during this beautiful season. Please see the schedule and Lenten regulations on page 2 of this bulletin. The annual St. Jude Lenten Fish Fry will be held in the Parish Center beginning Friday, February 20th and conclude with the last “fry” on Friday, March 27th. The Fish Fry has become a much-looked-forward-to event here at St. Jude. Not only does one get a very reasonably-priced meatless meal, but it is a really fun time that brings together so many members of our parish, with the vital participation of numerous ministries and organizations. Those who prepare, setup, cook, serve, and clean-up work as a team. They serve generously, and have a great time doing so. Whether one is a member of St. Jude or not, our doors are open to all who wish to join us for a meal and a very good time. For those who wish to attend, The Way of the Cross is prayed in church on the Fridays of Lent at 8:00 pm. On Wednesday, February 25th at 8:00 pm, Creative Ministries will present “Journey: the Cross and Crucifixion” in church; and on Friday, March 20th, “The Living Stations” will be presented at 7:30 in the church. A number of parishioners have asked, and vendors have called, as to whether there will be an Easter Fair this year. Unfortunately, the answer is “No”; for even though last year’s fair was successful, such an event requires much effort and coordination beginning in early January. The appeal did go out a few times for a new chairperson(s), but full commitments were not to be found. Therefore, unless someone comes forward to take charge of the Easter Fair next year, we will focus our energies on the Annual Christmas Fair and try to continue to make it as successful and enjoyable an event as possible. The 2015 Catholic Ministries’ Appeal (CMA) has begun here at St. Jude and throughout our Diocese of Rockville Centre. Our original goal for this year was $62,200. Due to the upcoming Capital Campaign to improve our parish building and grounds, St. Jude Parish petitioned Bishop Murphy and the Pastors’ Advisory Committee (PAC) to consider a reduction in our goal. We are most grateful to Bishop Murphy and the PAC for granting us a one-year Capital Fund Adjustment. Therefore our 2015 goal is now 50% of the original amount, or $31,100. Any monies that we receive in excess of 70% of the original goal will be returned to St. Jude. So even though the goal has been reduced to encourage parishioners to contribute/pledge more generously to our Capital Campaign, the more revenue raised for the CMA will still monetarily benefit our parish needs. In the last few years, St. Jude has consistently achieved about 110% of our goal. For those who have previously supported the CMA, ThankYou for your sacrifices and generosity in the past, and we ask all parishioners to prayerfully consider a gift or donation this year; even if you have not done so in the past. Personally, I have pledged the same amount of support as last year, and will do so over a 10 month payment period on my credit card. Thanks, again, for your consideration to support the 2015 CMA. The St. Jude Parish 2015 Lenten Mission will take place on three evenings: Tuesday, March 3rd through Thursday, March 5th. The theme will be, “The Way, The Truth, and The Life: Living a Spiritual Life in a Secular World.” This mission will be presented by members of our parish who have prayed over and will be presenting a series of well-prepared personal reflections to help you on your walk with Christ. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings will each have two talks, music and singing, and time for silent reflection and prayer. Confessions will be heard both before and after the mission on those evenings. On Thursday, confessions will be available before the Mass. I will celebrate the Mass and give the final talk. More information will follow. Please plan on participating and let the Holy Spirit work on your heart this Lent! In my homily of a few Sundays ago, I mentioned The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis. This book, which is still in print, is a most worthy read. It is about a senior demon, Screwtape, who writes letters to his apprentice-demon nephew, Wormwood, on how to lead humans away from God and towards damnation. It is a book filled with humor, yet communicates some very serious spiritual and moral lessons. If you would like to listen to it instead, the audio version by John Cleese of Monty Python fame is available online. The St. Jude Blood Drive will take place in the Parish Center next Sunday, February 22nd. If you are at all able, please consider giving the Gift of Life, as the blood supply is very low, due to the bad winter weather we have been experiencing. I have a noon appointment to donate… I hope to see you there! In Christ, Fr. This performance is a journey back through time. It is an opportunity to walk with Christ and become one with Him and the people who walked with Him. For many who have shared the journey it is almost as if it were happening now for the first time. Spread the word & bring a friend. It will be one of the most powerful experiences you’ll have during this Lenten Season. * A free will offering will be collected from those who wish to donate as you exit. CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL A New and Important Book- by Msgr. Daniel Hamilton ‘Worldviews in Radical Conflict’ by Msgr. Daniel S. Hamilton- “A priest and former editor tangles with The Times Editorial Board over its religion-related editorials.” More than 300 letter-essays evaluating The Times’ religion-related editorials for the period 1961-2014. Will our society become secularist? Our reasoning must be clear and convincing. Paperback is $15. This book is available at Createspace.com/5169783 or at Amazon. com/DB/0692352066. Msgr. Hamilton, a Rockville Centre Diocesan priest, is a former editor of The Long Catholic. Any monies that we receive in excess of 70% of the original goal – anything over $43,540 – will be 100% returned to St. Jude. So even though the goal has been reduced to encourage parishioners to contribute/pledge more generously to the Capital Campaign, the more we can raise for the CMA will be money in the bank – literally – for our needs. In the last few years, St. Jude has gone about 110% of our goal. For those who have previously supported the CMA, Thank-You for your sacrifices and generosity in the past, and we ask all parishioners to prayerfully consider a gift or donation this year; even if you have not done so in the past. Personally, I have pledged the same amount of support as last year, and will do so over a 10 month payment period on my credit card. Thanks, again, for your consideration to support the 2015 CMA. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who use their gifts to welcome and offer hospitality to those who are frequently shunned… the stranger, the immigrant, the AIDS sufferer, the mentally ill and the poor. Bulletin Reflection In today’s second reading, St. Paul urges the Corinthians to “do all for the glory of God.” If we follow that advice in everything we do, we cannot help but be good stewards! St. Vincent de Paul Jesus was “moved with pity”, and so he chose to heal the leper. And in spite of Jesus’ command to “tell no one anything,” Jesus knew that the leper would not be able to keep the good news of his healing quiet. And, yes, the leper does “publicize the whole matter.” Indeed, the leper proclaims the Gospel. Perhaps Jesus healed the leper because he recognized one who would be a disciple and spread the good news. “Join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul!” Mass Attendance Saturday 5pm Jan.18 238 Jan.25 243 Feb.1 219 Feb.8 242 7:30 178 145 110 128 Sunday 8am 9:30 11:30 5pm Total 198 270 530 145 1559 189 296 515 201 1589 188 336 430 155 1438 163 278 620 151 1582 Weekly Collection Feb. 8th $9,942.07 Scripture Readings McGann-Mercy High School- Driver’s Education Spring Session MONDAY , feb. 16, 2015 Give yourself peace of mind, give your teenager the gift of life! What do they do? How are they different from us, and why do we sometimes confuse them with God? Why are angels good and demons bad, and why can’t demons be forgiven? How do angels see? Are we simply angels covered in skin? What can angels make me think, and what can’t they make me do? What is it like to stand in a crowd of angels, and why doesn’t that make a lot of sense? These are just some of the questions that can be legitimately posed about those interesting creatures called angels. These students become vital participants in the renewal of the Church in the region. •The Church in Latin America faces many difficult challenges. Natural disasters in many areas caused lasting damage to the Church, while a significant loss of parishioners to migration and to other faiths, the inability to support itself financially, and a lack of priests and religious to help effectively minister to the large number of Catholics continue to trouble the region. •The Church in Africa – the funds will go to assisting African countries where poverty, sickness and political strife prevent people from living in dignity. Thank you for your generosity.
