St. Lawrence Catholic Community
believes we are called by our Baptism to
gather as a worshipping and prayerful
people. As responsible disciples of Jesus
Christ, we are called to be faithful
stewards of our time, talents and treasures. We value and foster Catholic education and evangelization. With open hearts
and hands, we reach out to all brothers
and sisters, as together we strive to offer
hope, act justly, love tenderly and walk
humbly with our God.

from Fr. Roman
Praised Be Our Lord Jesus Christ!
Today’s Gospel from Mark, contains several major themes. We hear of
Jesus and his apostles going to the home of Peter and Andrew. When
Jesus is there, he heals Peter’s mother-in-law who was suffering from a
fever. In the evening “they brought to him all who were ill or possessed
by demons.” [Mk 1:32] The Gospel also says “Rising very early before
dawn, he [Jesus] left and went off to a deserted place, where he
prayed.” [Mk 1:35] Though tired, Jesus took time to be in communion
with his Father. People pursued Jesus wherever he went. They were a
people in need; not only of physical healings, but they hungered to hear
the word of God, to be fed with the love, mercy and truth Jesus brought.
We are the same.
th
Sunday, February 8 is World Marriage Day. Emeritus Pope Benedict
XVI affirmed that marriage is an “instrument of salvation, not only for
married people but for the whole of society.”
And, like any
“worthwhile goal” he said, “it places demands upon us, it challenges us,
it calls us to be prepared to sacrifice our own interests for the good of
the other. It requires us to exercise tolerance and to offer forgiveness.
It invites us to nurture and protect the gift of new life.”
This week Wednesday, February 11th, is the feast of Our Lady of
Lourdes. I had the privilege of visiting Lourdes, France in 2004. It was
the same year Pope John Paul II made his final visit there. The Blessed
Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous eighteen times between
February 11 – July 16, 1858. On February 25, 1858, Bernadette scratched
from the ground the spring, where to this day, flows the miraculous water. Miraculous healings still occur at Lourdes through the intercession
of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The feast of St. Bernadette is celebrated on
February 18th.
February 11th is also the World Day of the Sick. Pope John Paul II designated this day “a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one’s
suffering for the good of the church and of reminding us to see in our
sick brother and sister the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying and
rising, achieved the salvation of the human race” (Letter Instituting the
World Day of the Sick, May 12, 1992).

We step with the foot of charity when
we work to assist others with their

work to address the root causes of
problems facing our communities.

Living the Good News
Little Flock
February 8, 2015
Were you one of the over 1 billion people who watched the half
-time show during the Super
Bowl? The featured performer is
always a well-known star! In Jesus’s time, he was quite
the rising star. . .thousands of people came out to see
Him. Today’s Gospel tells us a whole down gathered to
witness his healings or to be healed.
We look for Jesus as one whose way of living and relating
to others is in accord with what he preached by word and
action. He approached Simon’s mother-in-law, grasped
her hand, and helped her up; he cured the sick, drove
out demons, prayed, went out to bring Good News to all
people. Jesus did none of this to draw attention to himself, but instead to draw attention to God’s work of
salvation.
We preach the Good News when we look for Jesus in the
goodness of others, during prayer, in choosing good over
evil. We become the Good News when we speak words
of comfort to those who are suffering or grieving, encourage those with difficulties, or take a stand for moral
gospel living. Go ahead. . .grasp His hand!!
Have a great week and God bless,

prayer.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 741, pg. 195)

A Word … from the D.R.E.
A Word … from the D.R.E. (con’t)
We can easily relate to poor Job. Some days we feel like
life is drudgery and wonder when happiness will return.
We can also relate to Paul’s admission of weakness. Life
is hard work. Discipleship is even harder!
Do you have time to share your faith?
Opportunities to assist in our CRE program are
always available:
Classroom aides (Monday, Tuesday)
Liturgy of the Word (Sunday)
Special Needs Catechesis (Tuesday)
RCIA for Children (Sunday, Monday)
Please contact Lisa in the CRE office for more information.
We are blessed to have the comfort of prayer in the midst
of life’s challenges. Following Jesus’ example, we need
to find quiet time to talk to Him and listen to Him. We
have faith He hears us and answers us with love.
Prayer is a vital part of discipleship. One fourth of the
Catechism of the Catholic Church is devoted to prayer.
Every catechetical lesson starts and ends with prayer.
The Mass is prayer. This week let us hold each other up in
prayer and share what we hear!

Beating the Winter Time Blues
Do you find yourself oversleeping, fatigued during the
daytime, craving carbohydrates, withdrawing from social
activities and feeling blue during the winter when it’s
dark out more often than not? You may be suffering from
seasonal affect disorder (SAD). Here are some ways to
beat those blues: Get outside for a dose of natural morning light or consider buying a light therapy box, get off the
couch and exercise to increase your serotonin levels,
reach out to others for support, and eat wisely- good carbohydrates such as vegetables, fruit and whole grains.
Ask your health care professional to check your Vitamin D
level. Many people in the northern hemispheres don’t get
enough Vitamin D. Serious cases of SAD may require medication such as antidepressants. Seek help from your
health care professional if you believe you may be suffering from SAD.

Protecting God’s Children
Evangelization is telling an unbelieving world that the Gospels
are true revelations from God, and that these revelations impact
societies, making them healthier and stronger. The most effective evangelization does not come out of carefully crafted
speeches, videos, poster slogans, or any other media. The most
effective evangelization comes from and through the lived examples of human experiences.
Men, in particular, have a distinct responsibility to step up and
reclaim a leadership role in demonstrating to a questioning
world, that being a real man is not measured in one’s accomplishments, but in one’s ability to reflect Christ. Walking In The
Image Of God, is an open invitation for adult men of all ages to
come and explore what it means to walk in the image of God.
Being presented on the first Saturday of Lent, this day of reflection provides an opportunity for men to use Lent as a time of
reflection on their particular cooperation in the evangelization
of their families, friends, and communities.

Minister’s role is to bring God’s love into the lives of
people who are going through a difficult time or experiencing a crisis. What do Stephen Ministers do? They listen, care, support, encourage, and pray with and for a
person who is hurting. And in the midst of this confidential, one-to-one, caring relationship, God’s healing love
comes pouring through.
Abigayle Ministries Annual Fundraising Banquet will be
held on March 26, 2015, at The Palazzo Grande Banquet
Center in Shelby Township. This year’s event will
include an elegant dinner, ministry highlights, client
testimonies, thoughts from keynote speaker, Rebecca
Kiessling, and an opportunity to support our outreach
to homeless pregnant women, their babies, and
families in need.
If someone you know is facing a crisis—large or small—
and could benefit from the caring presence of a Stephen
Minister, talk to one of the Stephen Leaders at
St. Lawrence Catholic Church at 586-731-5347. Our

two winners of the 2015 CYO Winter Scholar Athlete Award. From
an impressive number of highly qualified individuals within
our Athletic Program, Haley Iacona and Dominic Ricci
bring home the honors. Haley and Dominic achieved their
high honors not only for their achievements on the basketball court, but more importantly, in and outside of the
classroom. Congratulations to both Haley and Dominic for
representing St. Lawrence in such a manner!!!
Basketball
A couple key 2nd quarter baskets from Marissa Muglia (8
points), helped spark the 7/8th Grade Varsity Girls to a 26
-17 win over St. Regis #1 at Marian High School on Friday
1/30. Impressive defense, which has been this teams hallmark all season, kept the Raiders in check throughout the
evening. Jenna Schultz, Riley Reese and Alaina Capoccia
all added 4 points each.
The 7/8th Grade Varsity Boys #1 went on the road Friday
1/30, and suffered a tough loss to St Regis #1 by a score of
38-26. The Mustangs struggled all game to score. They
continued their defensive efforts but couldn't get the other side of the game to flow together. The team was led by
10 points from Thomas Scheper, 8 pts. from Justin
Cieslak, 3 from Nick Severyn and a basket each by Grant
Toutant and Miles Kreger.
The 7/8th Grade Varsity Boys #3 lost a tough road game
to Division leader St. Clare #2 on Saturday 1/30, 6219. The Mustangs were led by Alex Suminski (5 pts.), Tony
Mustang Roundup (con’t)
Chammas (4 pts.), Nick Daher and Tommy Mansour (2
pts.).
Overcoming a half-time deficit, the 5/6th Grade JV Boys
#2 defeated St. Regis #2 by a score of 25-22 last Saturday.
After a slow start, the Mustangs played inspired basketball
during the second half in an effort to avenge its home-loss
to the Raiders earlier this season. The St. Regis front
court had great size, but the size advantage proved no
match against the focus and intensity the Mustangs displayed in the second half. Highlights in that second half
were plentiful, including: Michael Huskins' clutch shooting,
Gavin Grzywacz's dominate rebounds, a Lucas Bruni running jumper, and lock-down defense from Nathan Iacona.
The 5/6th Grade JV Girls #2 had a very devastating loss
against St. Regis #2. The girls came out playing strong and
at one point had a solid lead, but unfortunately, the Raiders bounced back quicker and harder than the Mustangs
could handle. Megan Adamczyk and Karlin Stepp led the
Mustangs with 6 points, and Maria Murphy contributed 2
more points. The game was tied 14-14 with 58 seconds
left, but St. Regis got the game winning point with a free
throw to finalize the game, 15-14.
The 5/6th Grade JV Boys #3 were the lone team last
weekend to travel to Holy Family. The Wildcats came out
firing on all cylinders as they opened up with 21 first half
points on 30% field goal shooting percentage to the Mustangs 5 points, shooting only 13% from the field. St. Lawrence was able to hold Holy Family to only 9 second half
points, but could not overcome the early deficit, and lost
to the much bigger team, 30-13. Mathew Watha led all St.
Lawrence scorers with 4 points, followed by three points
from Carter Kalkofen and two points each from Andrew
Kulwicki, Michael Wisniewski, and Brockton English. Holy
Family only outshot our Mustangs 44 to 39, but their shooting accuracy was the difference maker in the game.

The Living Stone-News from the Holy Land
Profoundly Pro-Life
Source: "Building Homes for Holy Land Christians" by Father Artemio Vitores Gonzalez, OFM; The Holy Land Review; Winter 2015; pp. 14-19.
Every year over a half million people gather in Washington
D.C. on January 22 to give voice to the millions of babies
that have been aborted since the passage of Roe v. Wade
in 1973. Every year this is historically the largest protest
in the U.S., and every year the mainstream media choose
to ignore it as if it never happened. Sadly, this is a fitting
response from a society that also has chosen to ignore the
humanity of millions of unborn children - as if they also
never happened.
Building Homes for Christians The lack of housing is a
phenomenon affecting millions of human beings. The
problem gets worse in cases of natural catastrophes and
wars, with refugees and displaced people as the most immediate consequences. The wars and conflicts in the Middle East are a dramatic example of this reality. Thanks to
the efforts of the Franciscan priests and brothers, help is
being provided for Christians caught in the strife occurring
in Palestine.
The Bible describes the Holy Land as the "Promised Land."
Even today, this identity is at the root of much of the current conflict. In Jerusalem and the entire Holy Land,
there is a frantic race by Jews and Muslims to acquire
homes.
Astronomical sums, sometimes reaching four
times the real value, are paid to acquire a home. The
buildings each community possesses in Jerusalem, particularly, will be very important in any future discussions of
the political and religious status of the Holy City.
Palestinian Christians often feel abandoned by Western
governments and by Christian social service organizations.
This feeling is not shared by Jews and Muslims. Many
Christians have chosen to emigrate looking for better opportunities, the cause of which further reduces their minority in the region. Despite the difficulties imposed by
the occupying powers, Catholic Church leaders have affirmed the mission of ensuring housing for Christians-important for the preservation of the local Church.
The Franciscan friars, through their role as the Custodian
of the Holy Land, have done much in maintaining Christianity in the land of Our Lord. Building and renting homes
is one of the main parts of this assignment. Currently,
the friars have 398 dwellings in East Jerusalem benefitting
Christians, who pay nothing. Living there are 392 families
with about 2,000 individual residents. In Beit Hanina,
north of Jerusalem, 66 apartments are being built. Another 69 apartments are being erected in Bethpage, near
where Jesus began his triumphant entrance into Jerusalem
mounted on a donkey. Other projects include 100 apartments and homes in Bethlehem, 124 apartments in Jaffa,
and numbers in the planning stage for Nazareth, Jericho,
and other biblical sites.
St. John Paul II sent the necessary funds to build one
apartment. Christians around the world are playing a part
by their annual contributions in the Good Friday Collection. This vital mission, to aid the "Living Stones" of the
Holy Land, our very brothers and sisters in Faith, should be
of utmost importance to all of us.
/Mike Butkiewicz
But this year, Congress chose this day to take a decisive
step toward recognizing the voice of the unborn and the
sanctity of human life by passage of the "No Taxpayer
Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2015"(HR 7), in the U.S. House of Representatives. This bill codifies a permanent, government-wide
policy against taxpayer subsidies for abortion and abortion
coverage. It also requires health plans offered under the
Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) to disclose the extent of
their coverage for abortion and the amount of any surcharge for that coverage to consumers.
Opponents of the bill argued that this legislation was unnecessary because the Hyde Amendment already provided
that federal programs do not pay for abortion or subsidize
health plans that include abortion. However, provisions of
the 2010 Obamacare health law ruptured that policy, authorizing massive federal subsidies to health plans that
cover abortion on demand.
Rep. Steve King(R-Iowa) said after the vote, "The President promised that 'under our plan, no federal dollars will
be used to fund abortions'. We know now that was a lie,
and this bill corrects his broken promise. We should not
be taxing Americans and forcing them to fund a violation
of their religious freedom. The passage of this bill today
is one more step toward restoring respect for the sanctity
of human life."
