SILENT PRAYER OF PREPARATION
O God of mountaintops and valleys,
of steep climbs, moments of glory,
and stark descents into valleys of need:
go with us on this day’s journey, we pray,
and equip us to sense both Your glory and Your grace.
In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of compassion,
in Jesus Christ You reveal the light of Your glory,
but we turn away,
distracted by worldly ambitions and selfish plans.
We confess that we speak when we should listen,
act when we should wait,
or wait when we should act.
Grant us wisdom to live in Your light,
and to follow the way of Your beloved Son,
even when the way is steep and difficult. Amen.
*Silent Confession
Arr. David N. Johnson

The response is, “And also with you.”)
*Response of Praise
(Hymnal, 32)
There’s not a plant or flower below but makes thy glories known.
And clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from thy throne,
while all that borrows life from thee is ever in thy care,
and everywhere that we can be, thou, God, art present there.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
from A Declaration of Faith, 1977
We are certain that Jesus lives.
He lives as God with us,
touching all of human life with the presence of God.
He lives as one of us with God.
Because he shares our humanity
and has bound us to himself in love,
we have an advocate in the innermost life of God.
We declare that Jesus is Lord.
His resurrection is a decisive victory
over the powers that deform and destroy human life.
His lordship is hidden.
The world appears to be dominated by people and systems
that do not acknowledge his rule.
But his lordship is real.
It demands our loyalty and sets us free
from the fear of all lesser lords who threaten us.
We maintain that ultimate sovereignty
now belongs to Jesus Christ
in every sphere of life.
Jesus is Lord!
He has been Lord from the beginning.
He will be Lord at the end.
Even now he is Lord.

Welcome to the Fellowship of University Presbyterian Church
SUNDAY MORNING CARE is available during both worship services for infants,
toddlers and preschool children, who will be welcomed by our trained nursery staff
and parent volunteers. Infants are welcome in the Sanctuary, but the parlor is a
wonderful place to calm an anxious baby. A special part of our service is the Time
with Children, when they are invited to join the pastor on the chancel steps for a
message that connects the worship of the day with their unique understanding.
DURING THE 11:00 A.M. WORSHIP SERVICE, UPC offers Godly Play for
kindergarteners and four-year-olds. This is a time of storytelling and creative play.
If your child is about to turn four, we invite you to contact Nancy Myer
at [email protected] or Leslie Moye at [email protected] to see if your child
may be ready for Godly Play.
WE WELCOME AND EMBRACE ALL CHILDREN and strive to provide skilled
caregivers to accommodate any special needs. Please contact the Staff Associate for
Children’s Ministries, Nancy Myer, at [email protected] or (919) 929-2102 if there is
anything we can do to enhance the Sunday morning experience for your entire family.

TODAY’S CHURCH SCHOOL LESSON for Grades 1-12 will be based on Mark
9:2-9. We encourage you to talk with your children about this passage.
THIS MORNING’S ORGAN VOLUNTARY offers Litanies, the best-known
composition of Jehan Alain, who was born 104 years ago earlier this month, on
February 2, 1911. Jehan was an organ student of Marcel Dupré and was one of the
most promising composers of an impressive generation that included Maurice
Duruflé and Olivier Messiaen. His short but important career as composer began in
1929 when Alain was eighteen and lasted ten years until the outbreak of WWII.
His untimely death on June 20, 1940, ironically just two days before the FrancoGerman armistice, surely robbed the world of much great music from his pen. His
organ music was greatly informed by the house organ his father Albert build for
their Paris home. After Albert’s death in 1971, the organ feel into disuse; a Swiss
organist mounted a plan to have the organ restored for posterity on the proviso it be
granted historical status. French organ politics being what they are, that request
was denied. Soon after, the organ somehow found its way to Switzerland, its many
parts hidden under boxes of strawberries on several trucks, where it was restored
and renewed. It now stands in the Institute Jehan Alain, a charming 17th-Century
building in Romainmôtier, a village about an hour north of Geneva. (It was my
great pleasure to see and play this organ during my 2012 sabbatical.) Litanies is
one of the most popular pieces in the modern French repertoire. It is a musical
representation of a Litany, a form of repetitive prayer, in which the theme is
repeated with greater and greater intensity. Three weeks after Litanies was
completed, Jehan’s sister died in a climbing accident while rescuing him from
danger. It was after this tragic event that Jehan wrote the following
dedication:“W hen the Christian soul in distress no longer finds words to implore
God’s mercy, it repeats ceaselessly the same invocation with a vehement faith.
Reason has reached its limit: Faith alone pursues its ascension.”
HOW WOULD YOU COMPLETE THE SENTENCE: I would like to hear a
sermon about__________? The pastors are planning for a summer sermon series
addressing such questions. We won’t promise to take on every subject everyone
names; we only have twelve Sundays, after all. But we’d like to hear from you as
we plan for the summer. Please send us your requests (via email, snail mail or a
note in the offering plate) by March 1.
NEW MEMBERS RECEIVED LAST SUNDAY: Catherine Campos, 105 Dove
St., Carrboro, NC 27510 [16]; Liz Tiller [19]; Peter and Ginny Page, 136 Cedar
Breeze Ln., Chapel Hill, NC 27517 [24]. (Neighborhood assignments are
designated within brackets).
WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN US on Ash Wednesday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m. in
the Sanctuary, as we mark the traditional beginning of the season of Lent, with

students who are active in Presbyterian Campus Ministry (PCM). Following the
11:00 a.m. service, the PCM board invites students and their families to stay for a
delicious lunch in the Fellowship Hall. We hope you will join us.
