University Presbyterian Church Chapel Hill, North Carolina November 30, 2014 First Sunday of Advent 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. THE GATHERING The congregation is asked to use the time of the Voluntary as a period of silent prayer and preparation. THE ORGAN VOLUNTARY Johann Sebastian Bach 1685-1750 Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland BWV 659 (Come, Savior of the Nations) SILENT PRAYER OF PREPARATION Faithful God, Your promises stand unshaken through all generations. Renew us in hope, that we may be awake and alert, watching for the glorious reign of Jesus Christ, our judge and our savior. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (Please sign the Worship Register and pass it on to your neighbor.) *OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 80:1-3 One: Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Jacob like a flock! All: Stir up Your might, and come to save us! Restore us, O God; let Your face shine, that we may be saved. *HYMN 347 “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” Picardy *PRAYER OF CONFESSION God who is with us, and God who is on the way, we confess that we do not wait or watch for You. Our preoccupations distract us. Our acquisitiveness distorts our focus. Inconsequential decisions command our attention. We have wearied of hoping for You to set things right and so have relied too often on our own wits. We hear Your promises, Lord, but dare not trust them. God of power and love, awaken us to hope and fit us for Your coming, that we may be made whole once again, as we watch for You with confidence and joy. Amen. *Silent Confession *Kyrie Eleison Arr. David N. Johnson *Declaration of Pardon *The Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. (The congregation is invited to exchange the peace of Christ with one another, greeting each other with the words, “The peace of Christ be with you,” or simply, “Peace.” The response is, “And also with you.”) *Response of Praise (Text, Hymnal, 360, alt.; Tune, Hymnal, 347) With our blessed hope before us, flutes are tuned and harps are strung; let the mighty advent chorus onward roll from tongue to tongue: Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Let each heart take up the song. OFFERING OF PENNIES FOR HUNGER (As the ushers come forward, please pass the pennies to the center aisle, if you are seated downstairs, or to the right in the balcony. As they are being passed, please join in singing verses 1 and 3 of Hymn 104, “O Lord, How Shall I Meet You.”) THE WORD SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM (11:00) Statement of Baptism Presentation of the Child Questions to the Parents Affirmation of the Congregation Daphne Laine Morales Daphne, with joy and thanksgiving we welcome you into Christ’s church, for we are all one in Christ. We promise to love, encourage, and support you, to share the good news of the Gospel with you, and to help you know and follow Christ. Prayer Administration of the Sacrament Welcome to the Child Response TIME WITH CHILDREN (Children, three-years old through third-graders, are invited to join the minister on the steps for Time With Children.) *LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE (8:30) Greg, Allison, Gavin and Miles Crawford (11:00) Mark, Mary, Sarah and Abigail Bozymski One: Today we light the first candle of the Advent wreath, the candle of hope. With Christians around the world, we light this candle to help us prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Isaiah said: But The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness – on them light has shined. All: Lord, let the light of Your love help us to become lights in the lives of those around us. Prepare our hearts for the joy and gladness of Your coming, for Jesus is our hope. Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE READING Mark 13:24-37 pp. 50-51 (Children’s Bible, p. 1173) One: All: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON “Waiting, Watching” Robert E. Dunham *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Declaration of Faith, 1977 God keeps his promises and gives us hope. In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus God kept his promises. All that we can ever hope for was present in Christ. But the work of God in Christ is not over. God calls us to hope for more than we have yet seen. The hope God give us is ultimate confidence that supports us when lesser hopes fail us. In Christ God gives hope for a new heaven and earth, certainty of victory over death, assurance of mercy and judgment beyond death. This hope gives us courage for the present struggle. *HYMN 357 “The Days Are Surely Coming” Llangloffan THE THANKSGIVING OFFERING OF SUBSTANCE AND LIFE Offertory Sentence At the Offering, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland BWV 599 (8:30) Bach (Come, Savior of the Nations) from Das Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book) A Carol (11:00) 16th Century German Melody arr. Hugo Distler 1908-1942 Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming From tender stem hath sprung, Of Jesse’s lineage coming, As men of old have sung. It came, a Floweret bright Amid the cold of winter, When half spent was the night. Isaiah ‘twas foretold it, The Rose I have in mind. With Mary we behold it, The virgin mother kind. To show God’s love aright, She bore to us a Savior, When half spent was the night. This Flower, whose fragrance tender With sweetness fills the air Dispels with glorious splendor The darkness everywhere. True man, yet very God! From sin and death He saves us And lightens every load. ~ Anonymous, 16th Century German *Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. CONCERNS AND CELEBRATIONS PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (closing with the Lord’s Prayer, Traditional, Hymnal, p. 35) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Welcome to the Fellowship of University Presbyterian Church SUNDAY MORNING CARE is available during both worship services for infants, toddlers and preschool children, who will be welcomed by our trained nursery staff and parent volunteers. Infants are welcome in the Sanctuary, but the parlor is a wonderful place to calm an anxious baby. A special part of our service is the Time with Children, when they are invited to join the pastor on the chancel steps for a message that connects the worship of the day with their unique understanding. DURING THE 11:00 A.M. WORSHIP SERVICE, UPC offers Godly Play for kindergarteners and four-year-olds. This is a time of storytelling and creative play. Following the Time with Children, kindergarteners and four-year-olds go with the Godly Play Assistant through the door near the pulpit to the Godly Play room on the first floor. Younger children exit through the door near the parking lot and font. WE WELCOME AND EMBRACE ALL CHILDREN and strive to provide skilled caregivers to accommodate any special needs. Please contact the Staff Associate for Children’s Ministries, Nancy Myer, at [email protected] or (919) 929-2102 if there is anything we can do to enhance the Sunday morning experience for your entire family. THIS MORNING'S ORGAN MUSIC offers two settings by Bach of the great Advent hymn Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (Come, Savior of the Nations) which first appeared in the Erfurt Enchiridion of 1524. The text of this hymn is attributed to Ambrose of Milan (c. 340-397) as paraphrased by Martin Luther (1483-1546). As with many Advent hymns of the period, the hopeful text was often coupled with music cast in a minor key to underscore the dichotomy of Christ's birth and the inevitability of the cross. In this morning’s Voluntary, Bach accentuates this notion by providing a ‘walking bass’ line throughout the chorale prelude, which has been interpreted as suggesting Christ's footsteps to Calvary. Of the highly-ornamented melodic line, the German musicologist Hermann Keller wrote “The solemn veiling [ornamentation] of the melody is expressive of the impenetrable mystery of the Incarnation of God's Son.” Bach’s setting of Nun komm from Das Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book) is heard during the 8:30 Offering. THE FLOWERS IN THE SANCTUARY today are given by the Bevin family in memory of and thankfulness for the life of Priscilla Bevin. THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM is being administered this morning to Daphne Laine Morales, daughter of Sarah and Jason Morales. Daphne was born on August 10, 2014. The banner was made by Presbyterian Women. THE ROSE ON THE RETABLE announces the birth of Inman David Parks. Inman is the child of Billy and Emily Parks and was born on November 18, 2014. NEXT SUNDAY we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Please take some prayerful time this week to prepare for this sacrament. TODAY’S CHURCH SCHOOL lesson for Grades 1-12 will be based on Isaiah 64:1-9. We encourage you to talk with your children about this passage. HANDICAPPED PARKING SPACES are set aside on Sunday directly in front of the church on Franklin Street and in the first four spaces in the church lot.
