Love Letters from Mount Rushmore

hen author Richard Cerasani discovered an old trunk
full of love letters in his Wilton attic, he was inspired
to write the story of his parents' marriage and his father’s
extraordinary work as a sculptor and artist on Mount
Rushmore. The result is a delightful book,
Love Letters from Mount Rushmore: the Story of a
Marriage, a Monument, and a Moment in History.
Before writing the book, Richard Cerasani
was known as Richard Caine, a professional
actor – he portrayed the villainous character,
Bill Watson on the daytime soap opera, General
Hospital in the early 1980s – with nearly 50
years of experience making television dramas and commercials.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase and autographing after Mr.

Information Workshop

its community partner, The Rural Law
Center of New York, Inc., presents
a workshop on legal resources of
interest to senior citizens, family
members of seniors, caregivers, and
elder care professionals.
Presentation topics include Wills,
Health Care Proxies, Consumer Rights,
and Grandparents' Rights. This is an
excellent opportunity to learn about
legal resources, ask questions and get
answers.
Broad Street Chamber Players
Every Day is Earth Day!
The Broad Street Chamber Players – flutist Elizabeth Chinery, pianist David
Smith, and cellist Jay Shulman – will perform works by Handel, Saint-Saens, Haydn
and other composers. This versatile chamber music ensemble offers audiences a
wide array of tone, color, and timbres.

A Program for Children

Library
Michael Eck and Thomas Lindsay are the Lost Radio Rounders, "upstate New
York’s premiere Acoustic Americana duo." Their special program is titled
"Selections from Alan Lomax's The Folk Songs of North America" in which the
duo will pay tribute to Lomax, one of the great American field collectors of folk
music of the 20th century. “Tom Dooley,” “The Wabash Cannonball,” “Sixteen
Tons” and “Down In the Valley” are just a few selections you may hear.
The Singing Anchors
Sunday, May 17 @ 2 pm
Your favorite trio of singing news anchors is back by popular demand! WNYT's
Benita Zahn and Jessica Layton, and Jerry Gretzinger (who’s given up his anchor
chair at CBS6, but who cares?) will fill the Library’s Helderberg Room with their
trademark harmonies and comedic riffs that will delight one and all. This will be a
very popular concert, so please come early!
It may not officially be Earth Day, but
it is coming soon and it's never too
early to celebrate our planet. Take part
in Earth Day crafts, a game, and ideas
for keeping our world clean and green.

Medicare 101: A Primer for Everyone
Tuesday, March 24 @ 1 pm
If you are enrolled in Medicare or soon to be enrolled,
you may have many questions: What is Medicare Part A?
Part B? Part D? What does Medicare pay
for? What will be your contribution? How
are prescriptions covered? And what
exactly is this "doughnut hole"?
Medicare can be very confusing, but
help is here: Janet Kiffney, a certified
Medicare Counselor with HIICAP (New York State's
Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance
Program), will present a "soup-to-nuts" program on
Medicare, and answer all your questions.
You'll leave with a better understanding of your options
and obligations with regard to health insurance.
An added plus: we'll have real doughnut holes and cold
drinks as refreshments.
This presentation is free and sponsored by the New
York State Office for the Aging and the Albany County
Department for Aging.

A Workshop with Dr. Wei Zhang

French-American photographer, Lionel DeLevingne, has
been documenting the anti-nuclear movement since the
early 1970s. He will discuss his work as a photojournalist,
specifically as documented in his book To the Village: From
Montague to Fukushima. His work will be on display in the
Helderberg Room through mid-March.

Baseball Talk in the Off-Season

To honor Guilderland's wonderfully diversified community
and welcome the upcoming Chinese New Year, GPL is
pleased to announce this workshop, a great opportunity to
experience one of the most unique cultures
through its most treasured art form.
This two-hour workshop introduces you to:
Mandarin (Standard Chinese) • the Chinese
writing system, traditional characters v.
simplified characters • The art of Chinese
calligraphy and five basic script types.
Digital Photo Forum
PEACE
GPL provides all necessary materials of Chinese calligraphy;
you will have an opportunity to write a few useful Chinese
characters, including the numbers 1 through 10 and your
own name in Chinese.
Dr. Wei Zhang has been very active in Chinese community
since moving to the Capital region. He teaches Mandarin as
the second language for adult students in Chinese School of
the Chinese Community Center. 

Come to the last – for this off-season, anyway – of our
monthly open and lively discussions about baseball, a
conversation that features YOU, the baseball fan.
The conversation will be started by Tim Wiles, former
Director of Research for the Baseball Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown. And then the back-and-forth is up to you.
We've had so much fun doing this for the past couple of
months, that we're doing it again!

Genealogy enthusiasts and professionals who have traveled
to Ireland as part of their family research will tell of their
adventures and discoveries on the road. Part of our
continuing series on travel genealogy research. Professional
genealogist Lisa Dougherty, will lead this presentation.

The Guilderland Library Foundation is hosting its
Annual Library Gala at the Western Turnpike Golf
Course on Saturday, April 25, at 6 pm,
and you're invited!
This dinner dance event features live entertainment, a firstrate meal catered by Mallozzi's, and some fun surprises.
Proceeds from the Gala will further the Foundation's
support of Library programs, such as the Carol J. Hamblin
Notable Author Events, the refurbished Community
Literary Garden, and so many other Library enhancements,
all done without the aid of taxpayer dollars.
This year's Honoree is Mr. Robert Ganz, former Trustee
and longtime president of the Library's Board of Trustees.
Tickets are $65 per person.

History of Grant Cottage
Saturday, May 16 @ 2 pm
On July 23, 1885, former General and President Ulysses S.
Grant died of throat cancer in a cottage on Mt. McGregor
in Saratoga County. During his stay, he was able to complete
his memoirs. Tim Welch, President of the Board of Trustees
of Grant Cottage, will discuss the history of the cottage and
Grant's final days there.

This session, provided by the Shaker Heritage Society,
introduces the Shaker plant and herb industries. Learn what
plants were used to dye fabric, treat illnesses, and flavor
foods. Sniff samples of herbs from The Shakers' extensive
garden. You'll try grinding herbs with a mortar and pestle
and create fragrant sachets that you can keep in a drawer or
closet. Registration is limited to 30 adults. 

Arsenic and Old Lace
Ms.Yates is trained in the Wilton method of cake decorating
and the owner of Little Bean Cakes. She also is an instructor
in the culinary program at Schenectady County Community
College. She brings her wonderful creativity to our Library
in this two-hour interactive cake-decorating class. This
program involves food, so please let us know if you have any
food allergies.
The class is limited in size, and was hugely popular in
January, when Ms. Yates last visited, so register soon! 

Learn to get online and "surf" the web. We'll cover some
basic terminology and how to use search engines to find
information. We will also cover how to evaluate online
information and websites.
Participants should be comfortable using a computer and
mouse. This class is limited to eight participants. 
Basic Computer Skills

Come learn how computers work and how to perform
simple tasks in this one hour class. Learn about hardware,
software, storage devices and how to navigate with a mouse.
This class is intended for the absolute beginner, no previous
computer experience is needed. Class is limited to 8

Friday, May 15 @ 2 pm
Learn the essentials of email communication in this hands-on
class.Topics to be covered: creating an email account, sending
and receiving email, how to attach photos or documents to
an email message, and maintaining your account. Attendees
should be comfortable using a computer and mouse. Class is
limited to eight participants. 

Parent and Teen Communication:
Strategies for Effective Family Talk
Thursday, April 23 @ 7 pm
In this workshop, parents/caregivers and their teens (ages
13+) will explore ways to improve family communication
through interactive, fun activities.
Families will identify and build on existing strengths to
improve listening skills, understand what parents and youth
need from each other, and practice strategies to deal with
family conflict. 
Planting Smiles for Mother's Day

Just in time for Mother's Day, Barbara Lukas of PBS station
WMHT will lead children ages 3-6 and their adult care
givers as they watch a DVD about planting potatoes and
read some books about growing vegetables and flowers. We
will then go out to the library garden and plant a flower and
vegetable to give Mom on her special day. 

Aerosciences Museum
Saturday, May 9 @ 11 am
The Empire State Aerosciences Museum in Glenville, NY is
a treasure in our backyard! Kevin Millington,Vice President
of the museum's Board of Trustees, will provide an overview
and history of the museum's remarkable exhibits, including
its collection of restored aircraft (from a 1906 Curtiss
Pusher to the spectacular F-14 Tomcat). Learn about the
museum's programs and events and then plan a visit using
our newest Museum Pass.
Fancy Nancy Tea Party
Friday, May 22 @ 4 pm
Ooh la la! Join us in a party that is just “Très Magnifique!”
Dress up in your fanciest clothes, whether in tiaras, tutus,
beads, ribbons, boas, or bows and join us for a Fancy Nancy
Tea Party!
We will read some excerpts from the book Fancy Nancy Tea
Parties, by Jane O’Connor, to help us with our etiquette, and
we will make corsages and necklaces, enjoy bubbles, learn
French words, have tea and eat some delectable (that's fancy
for yummy) treats!
Kids in grades K through 2 are cordially invited and must

Storytime with the Cat in the Hat
Monday, March 2 @ 3:30 pm
Celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with this special story time!
Dress up as your favorite Seuss character, and we'll have a
parade around the library! Then, the Cat in the Hat himself
will read a story. Afterwards, get your picture taken with
this famous feline! Pre-K and up.

"Baby and Me" storytimes offers parents and caregivers the
opportunity to share time together at the library with Baby!
If you have a baby between the ages of 4 months and 18
months and want to make new friends, you are welcome to
join us as we sing, clap, bounce, rhyme and read together!
Toddler Time
Wednesdays @ 10:30 am
For toddlers between the ages of 19 to 36 months and their
parent or caregiver. We will spend some time together with
puppets, books, songs, fingerplays, flannel stories and fun
movement activities geared toward these wiggly youngsters!
Storytime will be approximately 30 minutes followed by a
30-minute open playtime and conversation.
Preschool Drop-In Storytime
Thursdays & Fridays @ 10:30 am
Stories, songs, movement, crafts, and more all add up to
good times with your little ones. Although these storytimes
are for preschool children, all young siblings are welcome.
An important note about Storytimes:
If the Guilderland Central School District is closed, or delays
classes, Storytimes are not held on that day.

Read to Our Furry Friends

Our special furry friends are excited about coming back to
the library to listen to the stories that beginning readers
will share with them. Reading to a furry friend is a great way
for beginning readers to reinforce their reading skills, gain
confidence in their abilities, and have fun! 
Li'l Lego Club
Thursdays @ 3:30 pm: March 5, April 2, and May 7
Our Lego Club for children in grades K-2 continues this
winter. We will meet in the Story Hour room and use our
imaginations for some creative play with friends. Bring your
own bricks or create with ours. As usual, creations that you
bring to show off will be kept separate from the library
supplies. 

The Guilderland Public Library News is
mailed quarterly to all Guilderland
Central School District residents.
Children aged 3-5 years are invited to "Read, Build, and Play"
at GPL. We'll have a fun read-aloud and spend some time
building a story element with Lego DUPLO blocks! Children
will also have free play time with DUPLOs, Lincoln Logs, and
building blocks. In addition to being just plain FUN, playing
with building toys increases school-readiness by developing
math, science, and engineering skills. Children must be
accompanied by an adult. 

Money Smarts for Teens

Money Smarts for Teens with Cornell Cooperative Extension. Students in grades

Children in grades pre-K – 2nd grade are invited to share a fun morning of fun
number games and activities with WMHT's Barbara Lukas and Peg + Cat. You
will use patterns to create colorful glow in-the-dark necklaces, play domino
games to practice patterns and number skills, try dice games to work on addition
and subtraction skills, and make Peg + Cat themed puppets. Each child must be
accompanied by an adult caregiver. 
DIY Shaggy Loop Chain Maille Bracelet

Make a cool accessory for yourself or a friend, or maybe a Mother's Day gift for
Mom? This class is taught by Jacqui Hauser, owner of the Studio for Art and Craft
