RECENT HIGHLIGHTS
Family Literacy Day - January 27
TCDSB is pleased to participate in Family Literacy Day each year to encourage families to engage in
reading with and to their children, and instill a love of reading and learning. This year, the Parenting and
Family Literacy Centres hosted special events to celebrate the day, and invited guest readers in as part
of the festivities. During the celebration, families participated in various literacy activities, sang songs
and rhymes together! Refreshments were also provided. See photos from Literacy Day activities across
the TCDSB: http://www.tcdsb.org/news/othernews/2015/pages/family-literacy-day.aspx
Speech and Language Interactive Fair
The Speech and Language Department at the Toronto Catholic
District School Board invited all parents of kindergarten-age
children to attend a two-part interactive Parent Fair on January 20th
and 22nd. The Fair provided parents with advice and resources to
help their children improve listening and understanding skills,
speaking and literacy skills. Difficulty with listening, speaking and
playing skills in Kindergarten may lead to reading and writing
difficulties during the school years. Parents play a vital role in
supporting their child’s language learning at home.
The second part of the two-part Fair will be offered at St. Jane
Frances and St. Maria Goretti Catholic Schools on February 24th
and 26th. Free resources, toys and learning materials are available at
each session and refreshments are served.

Social Media and Safety Parent's Evening at Jean
Vanier
On Tuesday January 20th, parents gathered in the Jean Vanier
CSS library for a discussion around safe use of social media.
The invited guest speaker, Mr Steve Chapelle, has considerable
experience in IT work, and has been speaking about safe use of
social media for the last 10 years.
As parents enjoyed a pizza dinner, Steve covered such topics as
Twitter, Facebook, and simple texting.
Steve also provided the parents with strategies to prevent their
(and their children's) private information from being disseminated throughout the web. The evening
closed with a Q and A session, and was very well received.
St. Sylvester Literacy Day
Students at St. Sylvester wore their pajamas to
school for literacy day. They played a variety of
educational games and had reading sessions over
the course of the day.
Mayor and Education Officials
from South Korea Visit TCDSB
Park Chulhwan, Mayor of Haenam in
South Korea, visited staff at the Catholic
Education Centre on January 26th. He was
accompanied by officials from the Haenam
Board of Education. TCDSB Director of
Education, Angela Gauthier and Board
Chair Mike Del Grande were among Board
officials who greeted the visitors. For the
past five years, the South Korean Board has
funded TCDSB teachers to teach ESL in
their community during the summer time.
Number Fun at St. Ursula Catholic School
Each month students focus on a number. January was the number 9 and all
of the classes were involved with fun activities with this number. JK
students got to show nine using the light block. They even made number
nine numerals out of twigs.

the King and St. Teresa in a state of the art facility.
Pilot Project for Christian Meditation
Toronto Catholic District School Board is pleased to
announce a pilot project for Christian Meditation.
This initiative will involve 20 classes from 7 schools
across the city. Participating classes will be taught
Christian meditation by their classroom teachers who
have been trained in the process of teaching this form
and expression of prayer. A team of teachers was inserviced in January in preparation for this new
initiative.
St. Henry Schoolyard Biodiversity Grant
The Grade 6 students who visited Claremont Field Centre
based their action project on birds. After researching local
and endangered bird species, they decided to install two
bird feeders in their schoolyard. The students have taken
responsibility for refilling the feeders, keeping them clean,
and monitoring the biodiversity. The school community of
roughly 330 staff and students has enjoyed observing all the
birds that visit the feeders too!
OAPCE Meeting with the Minister
OAPCE Toronto met with Honorable Education Minister Liz Sandals on January 16th at the Regional
OAPCE meeting in Mississauga to discuss Education issues across the province. Topics discussed were
parent engagement, mental health for children, PRO Grant and the revised Health and Physical
Education curriculum that will be implemented in September 2015.
St. Fidelis Knitting Class
From the initial 3 students, the number of knitters grew quickly to 24, from Gr.4 and up, as grew the
sessions themselves. Meeting every single day, the knitters were divided in staggered groups ranging
from little experience, to gaining experience, to no experience.
The time-line was extended to January, to give every knitter the chance to produce at least one scarf.
And having done that, they will soon be delivered with accompanying notes, indicating what the
experience of making a scarf was like, and whom it might be for. The finished scarves are being
donated to Women’s Habitat – Shelter and Outreach for Women.
Day of Service
The Pathways team travelled to south Etobicoke on
January 16th to help out at the Daily Bread Food Bank.
With the generous support of the CEC staff, the team was
able to donate close to 350 lbs. of food and $185 in cash
donations. The SS Pathways team spent the morning
sorting food and learning about the largest provider of
food-relief in the GTA and were profoundly moved by the
fact that Daily Bread Food Bank grew so strongly from the
local initiative of an MSSB teacher--Sister Marie Tremblay
CSJ in 1983 who saw the need and worked to address it.
Pizza Nova Workshop at St. Sylvester Catholic School
The grade 2, 3/4 and 4/5 classes took part in a fun pizza workshop with
Pizza Nova. They rolled, flattened and tossed dough as they learned the
art of making a pizza. The workshops ended with pizza and goodie
bags for all participants.
CPIC Speaker Series Featuring Alyson
Schafer
The session was well attended by parents interested in
learning about empowering independence in their
children, and in bulling prevention and intervention.
Myles and Courage
In conjunction with Courage, the virtue of the
month, the students at Christ the King
welcomed double lung transplant recipient
Myles Lynch on January 16th. He spoke about
his experience dealing with Cystic Fibrosis, the
most wonderful gift of life he was given and
his experience at Sick Kids. The students were
impressed with his story of courage and his
unbelievable positive attitude and outlook on
life. He truly was inspirational to all.
Myles can be seen in several Sick Kids
commercials.

St. Michael Students at the Good
Shepherd
On January 19th, the Grade 8 students at St.
Michael Catholic School learned about
servanthood at the Good Shepherd Refuge.
The students made beds and folded
laundry. They had an opportunity to
consider what it would be like to be
homeless as well as have limited money
and require meals.
Maestro at Our Lady of
Wisdom Catholic School
On Monday, January 19th Hip
Hop performing artist and
speaker extraordinaire, Wes
Williams, also known as
Maestro Fresh Wes, electrified
the students from grades 1 to 8
with his message of hope and
positivity in having the courage
to stick to one’s singular vision.
He engaged staff and students as
he framed his 3 principles in
realizing his vision, using the
principles of “Expectations, Operation and Destination” and inspiring moments from his own life that
ranged from wanting to play hockey to writing rhyme for the first time in urban spaces like Parkway
Mall. Students listened attentively to Mr. William’s message of overcoming obstacles, such as,
negativity, bullying and self-doubt and working towards ones’ goals with equal measures of motivation
and determination.
Roots of Empathy Program at Our Lady of Wisdom
Little baby Charlotte, at nearly three months old, became a teacher on January
12th as she entered the Junior Kindergarten classroom at OLW, gazing and
smiling while making connections with everyone in the room. The Roots of
Empathy Program started triumphantly as students were able to observe
Charlotte and get to know her temperament, and watch her attachment and
interactions with mom. Beyond the social emotional realm the students also
explored math, discovering baby Charlotte was in fact bigger than the
classroom baby doll, as they had previously made predictions about the
comparison. Charlotte smiled when students sang the familiar song "Twinkle
Twinkle Little Star". The students are already asking, "Is baby Charlotte
coming today" eager to recreate the uniquely rich learning experience that bringing a baby into the
classroom can offer.
St. Michael’s Hospital Hosted its
Annual Co-op Fair
Co-op students placed at St. Mike’s Hospital
through Volunteer Services participate in a
semester long experiential learning program
earning high school credits. The co-op
programs helps students explore health-care
careers, develop workplace skills and gain
understanding of the science behind patient
care. Students are placed in a number of
different hospital units including: cardiology,
nephrology, day surgery, the vivarium,
medical imaging and the gift shop, to name
but a few. As well as their regular daily duties,
co-op students participate in hospital tours
including trips to the Vivarium, Core Lab,
Morgue, Simulation Lab and Medical
Imaging. These tours as well as jobshadowing assignments and lunch-and learn
sessions provide students with additional
opportunities to learn about the world of
Health Sciences. Congratulations to our
students from St. Joseph’s College, Madonna
Secondary, Bishop Allen, Jean
Vanier and St. Joseph/Michael Power who
have had an amazing and enriching learning
experience at St. Michael’s Hospital.

Paying It Forward
St. John the Evangelist students prepare to Pay It Forward as they learn
how acts of kindness change the way we feel, think and act. To promote a
safe, caring and accepting school staff and students have pledged to work
together to extend kindness in our school, at home and in the larger
community. Acts of kindness and charity are planned over the remainder
of the year, so that students understand the power of this Pro Kindness
Project. They are also learning that kindness is a common thread
throughout the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations. Each child wears
a PIF bracelet as a reminder to make every day a day with one act of
kindness at school. Teachers kicked off the project in December when
they formed teams to assist and prepare Christmas baskets for needy
families.

Changing the world, one play
at a time en français
In early January, Grade 11 Core
French students from Notre Dame
High School took the stage en
français to make a difference in their
community! In a project that has been
semester-long, students wrote and
illustrated children`s picture books,
which they donated to St. John
Elementary School. They then
dramatized and presented their stories as a series of short plays for students in grades 1, 2, and 3 at St.
John`s. The students at St. John`s brought in canned foods and dried goods as an ``admission ticket`` to
the performances and these collected goods were donated to the Out of the Cold shelter at Donlands and
Danforth Ave. It was a rewarding experience for students and staff involved, and highlighted that
everyone can be the difference in the lives of others, when we come together as a community and reach
out to one another.
Social Media Workshops for
Elementary Schools
The Chaminade College School Leadership
Class has once again partnered with Louise
Russo, founder of the Working Against
Violence Everyday (W.A.V.E) Organization,
which centers around the principles of Respect,
Responsibility and the Role of Leadership. The
team consists of 26 Leadership Students,
Police Constable Nicole Jamieson of 12
Division, Youth Workers Margaret Dovigo and
Laurie Brassard, and Leadership Teacher
Nadia Pasquini. Over the course of a week, the team presented to grade 8 students at St. Francis Xavier,
Immaculate Conception, St. Conrad, St. Raphael, Regina Mundi and Grade 7 and 8 students from St.
Simon. Workshops were created to educate on the use of social media and cyber-bullying awareness
and prevention strategies. Each student participant received a W.A.V.E. Youth Action Ambassador
Certificate, which empowered them to continue spreading the message.
Notre Dame Students Contribute Research to Eco Study
Examining a neighbourhood ravine ecosystem, Notre Dame Science
students showed their first ever publication and positive contributions to real
world issues that matter. Led by their teacher Dr. Gabriel Ayyavoo, the
study explores the overall health of the ecosystem at Glen Stewart Ravine in
Toronto The grade 11 enriched biology students contributed their ideas,
research, and most importantly, their time in the field to collect
environmental specimens.
Read more of their findings from the article is published in United Sates of
America within the Journal of Sustainability Education, issue - Dec 2014.

Skating at City Hall - a Toronto Rite of
Passage for St. Joseph College School's
International Students
For those international students who were unable to join
loved ones in China for the Christmas holidays, their
next best option was the second annual SJCS skating
excursion at Nathan Phillips Square with their St.
Joseph's family of teachers, administration, secretaries,
and CYW. On December 29th, these students
experienced for the first time the quintessentially
Canadian winter pastime of ice skating in the heart of
Canada's largest city. With tired legs (but no injuries)
and whetted appetites, we then ventured north (via
another Toronto institution - the Bay store's Christmas display windows on Queen St.) for some Chinese
food (Canadian style!) at the Mandarin restaurant in north Toronto. A memorable afternoon of vigorous
exercise, crisp winter air, and much laughter, followed by a delicious lunch, was for many of the
students one of the highlights of this their first Christmas in Canada.
St. Wilfrid and Argos Huddle Up Against Bullying
St. Wilfrid held a kick off assembly for Huddle Up Against Bullying on
Friday January 9th. Jonathan Hood, linebacker for Argos and Jason
Colero both spoke to students about bullying and sent positive
messaging about standing up against bullying. The school produced a
video to share the message and celebration of involvement in the
program. Student leaders will continue to work with staff to affirm the
message, and will add a Huddle Up award to the monthly student
recognition awards to continue to highlight the program objectives of
"Don't stand by, stand up."
For the past five years, TCDSB has had a partnership with the Toronto
Argonauts Football Club that provides funding to establish new football
teams or support existing football teams, opportunity for students to
apply for a scholarship award for a four-year post-secondary education,
physical activity events and visits to home games and practices. In

The Toronto Catholic District School Board educates more than 92,000 students from diverse
cultures and language backgrounds in 201 Catholic elementary and secondary schools,
serving close to half-a-million Catholic school supporters across the City of Toronto. As the
world’s largest publicly funded Catholic school system, we educate students in an inclusive
learning community rooted in the love of Christ, where they are challenged to grow in grace
and knowledge and to lead lives of faith, hope and charity.
At Toronto Catholic we transform the world through witness, faith, innovation and action.
