TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Brown on the
arrival of their beautiful baby
girl, Alexandra. Mr Brown is a
very proud father and we all
wish him and his wife the very
best for the future in this most
important role of parenthood.
As we are all Life long Learners we are
fortunate to be able to offer our staff
professional development in a number of
areas this year. All our staff will be part of the
PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning)
Ministry of Education Behaviour Management
programme. Two staff will be training in a
Communication and Language Development
Programme for students starting school.
Teachers will be completing an online
learning programme to begin our preparation
as a school for the development of
collaborative teaching and the redevelopment
of our school learning spaces as part of the
Ministry of Education redevelopment plan for
Oaklands School. Thank you to everyone
who attended our meetings this week and
shared your aspirations for your child for
2015. If you need to meet and discuss any
confidential information regarding your child
please contact their teacher who will be
happy to meet and discuss this with you.

OVERVIEW-MRS MARTIN DP:
2015 has got off to a great start with all
classes working through a ‘Learning Plan’
that follows on from the excellent work that
was done during our Transition Week in Term
4. The aims of the Learning Plan are:
 For classes to get to know each other
and share ideas about how they will
play, learn & communicate effectively
as a team
 To explore strategies & skills students
can use to be successful when the
learning is challenging (Our Learning
Dispositions)
 To become familiar with our school
rules & school/class procedures
 To learn about cyber safety & how
using technology responsibly links with
our CARE values
 To reinforce the CARE values and
share ways we can ‘Fill each others

Buckets’ and make the classroom a
positive place for everyone
To have fun
One of the aims of the learning plan was to
engage with our community so it was great to
see so many whanau visiting classrooms and
enjoying a picnic dinner last Wednesday.
This week teachers are looking forward to
meeting with families to set goals with
students and to continue to build positive
partnerships to support learning.
To celebrate the completion of the learning
plan the whole school will take part in a
tabloids sports event between 9.30 and 11am
on Friday the 13th. Students are invited to
wear their house colours on that day and
there will be lots of opportunities to have fun
and earn pozis for their house.
In week 3 all students will bring home a copy
of their class’s learning plan. Please read
through this booklet with your child and get
them to share their learning & their strategies
for having a successful year with you.
Another strategy for strengthening the
home/school partnership is our Home
Communication Book. These will come home
daily from week 3 for the Kàkano team and
on Fridays for the Kauri team.
“Education is shared commitment
between dedicated teachers, motivated
students and enthusiastic parents with
high expectations”

CELEBRATING CULTURAL DIVERSITY MULTICULTURAL DAY AT OAKLANDS:
We have pupils from over 20 different
ethnicities at Oaklands School and we are
going to celebrate our cultural diversity on
Monday 23 February.
We hope our students will wear their national
costume or wear something from their
country (for example, a t-shirt of an important
sports team).
Each class will have a shared lunch and we
ask that your child bring a small plate of food
from your country to share.
If your family knows a game, a story, a song,
or some information about your country,
please discuss this with your child so that
they are able to share it with their class.
Some parents are going to share activities
with students during the morning. If you
would like to help, please contact me:
[email protected]
Parents: This is an opportunity for you to
showcase your culture, so please feel free to
wear your national costume to the Whole
School Assembly in the afternoon.
