Room 23 will be sharing their learning with us!
At our assembly on Monday we had Senior
Constable Ross Mitchell introduce himself as he
will be working with all students delivering the
KOS (Keeping Ourselves Safe) programme. We
would like to extend a warm welcome to
‘Constable Ross’.
shows that praising the process –children’s effort
or strategies—creates eagerness for challenges,
persistence in the face of difficulty, and enhanced
performance. Next time you are tempted to tell
your child that he or she is the next Einstein or
future Picasso, stop yourself. Instead, take the
time to appreciate what they put into their work,
not what the work means about their innate brains
or talent. Ask them how they went about it and
show them how you appreciate their choices,
their thinking process, or their persistence. Ask
them about strategies that didn’t work and what
they learned from them. When they make
mistakes, use these as occasions for teaching
them to come up with new strategies. When they
do something quickly, easily, and perfectly, do not
tell them how great they are. Tell them, “I’m sorry
I wasted your time on something too easy for you.
Let’s do something you can learn from.” Look for
ways to convey your valuing of effort,
perseverance, and learning—rather than some
empty display of ability. Instead of false
confidence in fixed ability, these methods will
foster an appreciation for the true ingredients of
achievement and are more likely to result in
academic progress. The youtube link below
explains more about the importance of developing
a growth mindset:

I have had some comments by parents about
dogs in school. Could you please not bring your
dog into the school grounds before and after
school when you are meeting your child. This
can be difficult for other students.

YEAR 7 CAMP IN WAINUI:
Last week the Year 7s went on Camp to Wainui.
We had a lot of fun trying some great outdoor
activities. We went Coasteering, Kayaking, did
High Ropes, Archery and some fun Cooperative
Games. The camp concert was also a highlight!
Below are some pics of the adventures that we
had!
TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY
What a great week for our students who have
represented our school at the zone swimming,
this event involves a number of local schools.
Well done to all our students who competed in
this event!
I also had the opportunity to visit Wainui Camp
last week. Our year 7 students were having a
great time and the staff were very proud of their
ability to manage themselves in this challenging
environment.
While the year 7 students were at camp our year
8 students learning focus was on relating to
others. The year 8 students were buddied with
our new 5 year olds. The year 8 students learnt
about perseverance, communication skills & how
to relate to others in a different environment.
They also problem solved and developed a profile
using their literacy and technology skills. During
the time they also worked in our Garden to Table
programme. I know at the end of the programme
they appreciated the skills of our teachers in the
junior school.
MODERN LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AT
OAKLANDS - MRS MARTIN:
Growth Mindset
At the start of the school year many parents and
caregivers are asking themselves and teachers
"What can I do to help my child succeed in his
learning this year?" More basic facts practice,
spelling homework or extra reading may seem the
obvious answers but research carried out on the
brain in recent years suggests that working with
your child on building their attitude towards
themselves as learners is more likely to achieve
desired results. Try spending some time talking
to your child about something they are finding
difficult - it may be academic or a sporting or
cultural challenge. Ask them the strategies they
have used and the process they have followed to
get better at this learning challenge. Research

WELL DONE KATIE:
On Saturday I did a Jazz Solo Competition. When
I danced I was shaking because
I was so nervous. After my competition there were
a few more dances. Then it was time to go up and
get the awards. I got highly commended. My
award was a dark, shiny, blue ribbon and a
butterfly sticker. I was very proud of myself.
