Second quarter honor roll...pages 3-4 Don’t look now but it’s Friday the 13th! By Lexi Abelgore One of the most unlucky days of the year is upon us. This year, 2015, is an especially unlucky year, as the 13th will land on a Friday three times this year compared to 1 Friday the 13th in 2014. It is not known for sure why Friday the 13th is such a superstitious day, but historians believe that it may have something to do the fact that both Friday and the number 13 are considered just plain unlucky because of their connection with the crucifixion of Christ. Although superstitions are heightened on ‘ Friday the 13th, they last all year around. Even G. Ray Bodley students feel unlucky in certain situations. Freshman Chris Tetro feels uncomfortable whenever he spills salt. When it happens, he say, “I put a little bit of the salt in my hand and throw it over my left shoulder.” Senior Maggie Williams, like many others, knocks on wood after certain things are said. An example that Maggie gave is when you say something like “I didn’t get a nose bleed today, knock on wood.” Adding the phrase “knock on woodí”is meant to not jinx a situation. Maggie also adds, “I do believe in Friday the 13th, I have to say. That day stinks.” Technology teacherMr. Wilcox admits that he would not walk underneath a ladder. He also said that he has broken a mirror before, an action that is said to cause seven years of bad luck. When asked if he experienced those unlucky years, he replied “I don’t know.” “I’ve had bad luck since I came out of the womb,” said senior Hope Williams. Not all of us are superstitious, but if you are, look out for black cats, full moons and the number three. RaiderNet G. Ray Bodley High School, Fulton, NY Volume 5, Number 76 ly i a D Friday, February 13, 2015 Raiders invade OCC with title hopes on their minds The Raider wrestlers will be seeking a return to hallowed ground this Saturday when they head to Onondaga Community College in search of the Section III Division I title. Third in 2014 and second best in each of the prior two seasons, Fulton will look to take that toughest step forward when the action begins at 10 am, aiming to reach a plateau last attained in 2011 when they charged past the field to claim their fifth straight title. Standing in their way is two-time defending champion Baldwinsville, as well as last yearís runner-up Liverpool, the Warriors finishing three points better in the 2014 at 137 to 134 to relegate the Raiders into the third position. In 2013 the Bees were two points better than Fulton in a 145.5 to 143.5 thriller, and last year Baldwinsville outdistanced the field by a full 18 points. (photo from cnywrestling.com) The question to be answered on Saturday is whether the Raiders have enough to regain the top position in the Division I ranks. Two-time defending champion Mitch Woodworth, fresh off establishing the alltime Fulton record for wins is seeded first at 126, while returning kingpin Travis Race is also the favorite at 170. Woodworth is 330 on the season and Race is 39-6 coming off this 100th victory of the current campaign, but both wrestlers know that past glories will mean nothing when they take to the mats with a return trip to the New York State Tournament on the line. Joe Abelgore brings a 30-10 record into Saturday’s competition as the second seed at 99 while teammate Wyatt Willis is seeded fifth in the same weight class. The Raiders will be counting on big performances from a group of young wrestlers as eighth grader Nick Noel (20-16) is the fourth seed at 106, 120-pounder Adam DeMauro is fifth seeded at 120, and fellow eighth grader Dylan DeMauro enters the 132 pound ring as an unseeded competitor. Sophomore Roy French is the six seed at 113 pounds while junior captain Tim Holden carries an impressive 38-8 mark into the 138 pound competition as the second seed. Page 5 Excellent season for Bodley’s Ski & Snowboard Club While there are many among us who would just as soon see the snow melt away tomorrow, there were more than a few sad faces on Tuesday night when the 2015 Ski and Snowboard Club season came to a close at the completion of the six yearly trips to Labrador Mountain. This year’s club was one of the best groups this school has seen in quite a while and despite some frosty Tuesday nights, it was one of the best ski seasons in the past few years. And as this season ends the club would love to continue on with it while hopefully expanding the fun filled bunch into next year‚Äôs season. Ski club is a great way to meet new people and stay active along with learning a new sport that you one continue to improve on their own. Every year there are students who have never set foot on the slopes before in their life, but by the end of the season they have come a long way and are able to take on the trails with confidence. The cost for a ski pass and six trips in the chartered bus to Labrador Mountain is about $200 and includes the price of lessons for those who may be beginners. It does not, however, include rental price if someone needs boots and a board/ skis. Although the club only takes six trips up to the mountain together, the pass will be valid every Tuesday through the rest of the season. For those interested in joining, Club Advisor Mrs. Downing is always looking for new members and advises every to start saving early for next year’s edition of the GRB Ski and Snowboard Club.
