Chapter 15: How to Start a Class Effectively
Chapter 16: When and how to take roll
Presenters: Jessica Estrada and Matteus Chipwelong
1. Bellwork:
• What do you think is the best way to start class?
2. SLO’s: Students will be able to…
• Demonstrate how to take roll efficiently and effectively
• Know ways to get the students to work immediately
• Know how assignments should be posted
3. Norms: Students will volunteer to recite the J-1 norms
4. Warm-up Activity: “Show us How You Jiggalo!”
• Students will form a circle and clap to a beat (will demonstrate)
• Students will call out another student’s name (for example, “Hey Matt!” “Yeah?” “Hey
Matt!” “Yeah?”
• Everyone : “Show us how you jiggalo! Show us how you jiggalo!”
• Student: “With my hands up high and my feet down low, this is how I jiggalo!” while
doing an action/dance.
• Students repeat “With my hands up high and my feet down low, this is how I jiggalo!”
while doing the same action/dance. The student who was called last gets to call another
student.
5. Activity#1: Tic Tac Toe Challenge
• Students will be divided into two groups
• We will read a question, and the first group with the correct answer wins a chance to
mark their spot on the tic tac toe board. Group who gets the tic tac toe wins.
• Questions:
• True or false: the first thing you must do at the beginning of class is take attendance.
(FALSE
• Name three different names for morning opening assignments. (Bellwork, bell ringer,
DOL, energizer, WOD, opening activity, prime time, sponge activity, do now)
• Where should the effective teacher post assignments? (In the same location every day)
• True or false: Students with an effective teacher will ask the questions “Are you going to
lecture us? Are you going to let us have a study period? Are we doing anything today?”
(False. That would be an example of an ineffective teacher.
• Are bellwork assignments graded? (NO)
• How often should there be morning assignments? (Daily)
• True or false: “The effective teacher informs the class where to find the assignment.
(TRUE)
6. Activity#2: What it looks like, what it sounds like, what it feels like, draw it!
• Students will be divided into two groups again
• One group will present the effective roll taking and discuss with the class.
• The other group will present the ineffective roll taking and discuss with the class
7. Conclusion/ Assessment
• Review SLO’s, Distribute key point handouts.

Chapter 16:When and How to Take Roll
 The effective teacher starts the class immediately with an assignment, not roll
taking.
Simplify the roll-taking process so it does not take away from
instructional time
 There are many ways to take roll; however, your first priority is to get the students
on task.
• As the tardy bell rings, first scan the room for students who are not at work.
• Use a firm smile and a hand gesture that clearly indicates that you want them
to work
• As soon as the class is at work, proceed to take roll without disturbing the
class.

Each time the class yells out a response, the
noise level gets higher.
Confrontation builds up between the class and
the teacher over whether or not a student is
absent.
Valuable minutes are wasted
The class is well structured.
Students know the procedure.
Class starts on time.
• Maximized academic learning time.
Many students sit, bored, while precious time
is wasted on book keeping chores that really
does not involve the class.
 Three ways to take roll efficiently and effectively:
• Quickly
• Quietly
• Without disturbing the class.


The effective teacher:
Has a posted assignment ready for the students.
Does not disturb the class during roll taking.
Takes roll quickly and quietly.
Prepares the attendance count after the students are on task.
