SEASON OF LENT
The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015 and ends with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper
on Holy Thursday, April 2, 2015 exclusive on Holy Thursday when the Easter Triduum begins.
Lent is the principal penitential season in the Church year.
All the Christian faithful are urged to develop and maintain a voluntary program of self-denial in addition to the
Lenten regulations which follow serious prayer, and the performance of deeds of charity and mercy, including the
giving of alms.
Abstinence: Everyone 14 years of age and over is bound to abstain from meat on
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.
Fasting: Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is required to fast on
Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence,
only one full meatless meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to
maintain strength may be taken according to each person’s needs but together these
two meals should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted.
Liquids including milk and juices are allowed. To disregard completely the law of
fasting and abstinence is seriously sinful, meaning that non-compliance with these
regulations in full knowledge and consent of will, is normally a mortal sin which
must be confessed before receiving Holy Communion.

During the Season of Lent, Mass will be celebrated each Wednesday evening at 5:00 pm. in the main Church.
We will be praying the Stations of the Cross on Wednesdays after the Lenten 5:00 pm Mass
with a class from the PSR program.
and on Fridays after the 8:00 am Lenten Mass.
Everyone is welcome to attend these services as a way of living out the Lenten directive of spending time in
prayer with our God.

Ash Wednesday, Wednesday, February 18, 2015, marks the beginning of the Season of Lent.
This a season of penance, prayer and fasting which prepares us for the Resurrection of Jesus
on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015.
Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church and they help
us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice.
Join us Ash Wednesday on February 18th to receive ashes at one of these three Mass times:

Celebration and Farewell for Bishop-elect Ferd Cheri, OFM
All are invited to the celebration and farewell for Bishop-elect, OFM, to be ordained an Auxiliary Bishop
of New Orleans on Sunday, February 15th,at the 5 p.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception,
Springfield. Bishop Thomas John Paprocki will be the main celebrant with Bishop-elect Cheri concelebrating.
All priests are welcome to concelebrate. A reception with Jazz music and New Orleans style food will follow
the liturgy in the Cathedral Atrium. Please join us to congratulate Bishop-elect Ferd Cheri, OFM.
Restore the Church Build The Future
Next week we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports
Catholic organizations that provide affordable shelter and train seminarians in a region that still struggles from
the effects of Soviet rule. By providing pastoral care, catechesis, and funding for building renovations, your
donations help to restore the Church and build the future in the region. Please give generously to the collection

The Auxiliary would greatly appreciate your donation of
pies and/or cakes to be sold at these meals.
Though High School will not meet again this school for
a discussion group we invite all students and their
friends in grades 7-12 for a monthly event. On the
first Wednesday of each month we will get together
and food will always be provided. We will continue
this the rest of the school year!
Baked goods can be dropped off at the KC Hall
after 9:00 am on the day of the Fish Fry.

Our next event will be Wednesday, March 4th
from 6:30-8:00pm in the Social Hall. I will provide a
chili bar complete with the makings for chili dogs and
chili cheese nachos. All 7-12 graders are invited to
come paint and bring friends. It should be a great
time! Sandra Cania is coming and will provide the
paint supplies.

Gillespie. Registration ($2) begins at 9:30 a.m. Mass
is at 10 a.m., followed by a meeting, lunch, a Catholic
trivia game and prizes. The special collection is for
our Diocesan Seminarians. There is a free-will offering

Event this past Wednesday due to the inclement
weather.

Wood. Your help was very much appreciated and
made the evening go smoothly.

Pancake & Sausage
Pancake and Sausage Day: The 23rd Annual All You
Can Eat Pancake and Sausage Day has been
scheduled for Sunday, February 22nd from 8:00 a.m.
to 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church on Route 4 in
Virden. Adults are $6, children 6-12 are $3, and
children 5 and under are free. There will be a 50/50
drawing. All proceeds will go to the Catholic Youth
Program. Don’t miss our specialty—blueberry

Conquering the Oscars
Many times in life we come face to face with situations that seem so directly opposite that it has to make you
chuckle at the irony. Irony...a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one
expects and is often amusing as a result. This coming week there is a perfect example of irony.
Who do you conjure up when you hear the word grouch? It might be a certain person who's disposition
matches very closely the personality of the that beloved resident of the trash can, Oscar. Looking at the
world though smog hazed glasses, the Oscars seem to always have a thorn in their sides. This may be a
bit of profiling, as we very often don't really know what circumstance have caused the "glasses" to be put
on, but we can help. What if like the fable about the mouse removing the splinter from the grumbling lions
paw, you could turn that disposition upside down? If it was only for a day it would make one corner of the
world a little brighter!
On February 16th, it has been declared national "Do a Grouch a Favor Day" followed the very next day by
national "Random Acts of Kindness Day", on February 17th. Could there be any more perfect lead in to Ash
Wednesday on February 18, and the season of Advent?
Doing a "favor" could be actually be a random act of kindness. Like a ripple you might start with that
individual that is most difficult, that one that may not even notice. It could be placing that newspaper on the
front step, blowing the leaves away from their
entryway, baking some cookies. Those "glasses" might be lifted to see the world a little rosier. Maybe, just
maybe, it might actually make a smile creep onto Oscar's face. Maybe it would cause that ripple to roll into
a crashing wave, conquering one Oscar at a time and ultimately it's no longer a random act but a way of life.
