opportunities in the years ahead.

Guests are requested to rise when the procession enters and remain standing
until after the singing of O Canada.
It is suggested that the audience refrain from applause until all the certificates
or diplomas for each group have been presented.
We ask that you keep the aisles clear so that our graduates can make their way
to the stage and back to their seats.
As a courtesy to everyone, we ask that graduates and guests remain in
attendance until all the parchments are presented and the ceremony is concluded.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the audience will rise as the platform party
and graduates leave the theatre.
Graduates, guests and members of staff are cordially invited to a reception following
the ceremony.
Thank you all for coming out to celebrate the achievements of our graduating students.

Honour Song
For centuries Indigenous people have believed that the drum and the human heart share
a similar purpose. This purpose is to provide life through its heartbeat. This connection
promotes oneness, love and respect for all living things. The Honour song brings voice
and calls spirit to honour the relationship of all life, thus honouring the reason for the
honour song’s request.
Usually sung in honour of a particular person, honour songs are also sung for groups or
sacred ceremonial gatherings. When an honour song is sung at gatherings, it is respectful
to stand and remove your hat. The songs of the people are in language and beliefs,
in stories and dances, and who or what is honoured.
A ceremonial honour song are specific songs sung for sundance, inipi, pipe ceremony,
etc. Honour songs can be sung for filling a sacred pipe, calling in spirits, sending spirits
away, praying to the four directions, and so forth. There are specific honour songs for
different ceremonies, although sometimes some will be used for another ceremony.

Red River College awards a Red River College Honorary
Diploma to an individual who demonstrates high
standards of excellence in their personal and professional
achievements, and whose involvement in the community
is widely recognized.
Lisa Meeches is one of the most dynamic and respected producers in the film industry, who happens to be an Ojibway from Long Plain First Nation. One of her recent
projects, 4 time CSA nominee and 2 time winner We Were Children, is widely praised
by residential school survivors for its power to heal, while general audiences have been
moved by this truth of Canada’s colonial past.
Ms. Meeches has produced numerous projects for critical acclaim. Among them include: 500 plus episodes of The Sharing Circle, Canada’s longest running Aboriginal
television series; Tipi Tales, a Parent’s Choice award winning children’s series; and Elijah, a Gemini Award winning movie-of-the-week, the 3 times nominated 2 time winner of CSA’s JACK, The list goes on…
Lisa conducts her film industry work through her three companies: Eagle Vision Inc,
Meeches Video Productions, and Century Street Distribution.
Lisa also devotes considerable time to other causes. Lisa has been critical to the success
of the Manito Ahbee Festival since inception 8 years ago where she has acted in the
capacity of board chair on a volunteer basis until recently stepping down to assume
the role of Executive Director. Lisa also sits on the national board of the Heart and
Stroke Foundation.
Lisa has been the recipient of many local, regional, and national awards for her exemplary contributions in culture, media, and entrepreneurship. Among her many accolades, Lisa is a past recipient of a National Aboriginal Achievement Award.
True to her heritage, Lisa practices the customs of her faith and is a renowned champion fancy shawl dancer.

Red River College awards a Red River College Honorary
Diploma to an individual who demonstrates high standards
of excellence in their personal and professional achievements,
and whose involvement in the community is widely
recognized.
Larry Vickar has been in the automobile industry for 44 years, serving in numerous
capacities and working his way up from office, finance, credit and sales positions to
partnership in one dealership. He now heads up the Vickar Group of Automotive Dealerships, which consists of six operating companies representing four manufacturers –
General Motors, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Isuzu – and employs over 300 Winnipeggers.
Larry attributes the success of his businesses to the collaborative efforts of his staff, who
work together to serve their mutual customers with respect and with the attitude that
they wish to be the “places” where Customers Send Their Friends. That, as their mission
statement reads, says it all!
Having been taught from an early age that sharing one’s time and resources was the
right thing to do, Larry has served – and continues to serve – his industry and the local
and international general communities. He has previously served as President of the
Manitoba Motor Dealers Association and the Transcona Rotary Club, to name a couple.
Larry has worked at the local, provincial, national and international levels, championing
worthwhile initiatives, some of which are focused in areas of great need. Currently, he
sits on the Executive of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, The Jewish National Fund,
St. Boniface Hospital Foundation and the Manitoba Hydro Electric Board.
Larry and his wife, Tova, have been instrumental in building a village for the poor in the
Philippines and a water project in Israel, and more recently, have helped develop and
nurture the L’Arche Tova Café in downtown Transcona – a place to showcase the talent
of those with developmental disabilities.
For these and other accomplishments, Larry has been the recipient of numerous awards,
including the Laureate – the highest award given by the Canadian Automobile Dealers
Association for extraordinary service to the community and industry; the Saul Kanee
Distinguished Service Medal from the Jewish Federation; a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
Medal; Lieutenant Governor’s Community Service Awards from both the Manitoba and
Winnipeg Chambers of Commerce; and honours at the Jewish National Fund’s Negev
Gala and from Winnipeg’s Filipino community.
Later this month, Larry and Family will be recognized at the Rady JCC Sportsman’s
Dinner. His proudest accomplishment is his family – his wife, Tova, of 43 years; his
children Sam and Lisa, and Stephen and Marie (also partners in business), and his two
grandchildren.

Teaching Award of Excellence
Laurie Slater

School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts
The Red River College Students’ Association Teaching
Award of Excellence is awarded annually to an instructor
in recognition of outstanding teaching practices and
dedication to students.
Laurie Slater had years of experience in hotel management under her belt when she
became a Red River College instructor two decades ago. She made an easy transition
to teaching, given the many similarities between training new staff and new students.
But Slater — a Hospitality instructor and recipient of RRC’s 2014 Students’ Association Teaching Award of Excellence — says she now sees just as many parallels between
students who’ve established themselves in a new industry and grown children who’ve
returned home for a visit.
“The most rewarding part [of teaching] is when students come back five years later
with a good job title and a new baby, and they visit with you for half an hour talking
about how their college experience has helped them,” says Slater.
“If you think about it — when they first come here, they’re new, so everything is
lovely and rosy. But by the time they leave, they’re frustrated with you, because you’ve
made them work hard and think for two years, so they just want to get away. But later,
they’ll say, ‘I guess she really knew what she was talking about.’ There’s a change in
perspective.”
Slater says she’s witnessed a number of changes to both the industry and the classroom
over the years, noting students these days are more interested than ever in seizing opportunities for applied learning and hands-on training. With the increasing diversity
in the classroom, creating inclusiveness is a must.
While technology and teaching methods may have changed, there are certain things
about the hospitality industry that remain constant from year to year.
“Good old-fashioned customer service never goes out of style.”
“Excellence in customer service will still increase profitability,” she adds, noting she believes in role modeling this concept for students, as they are essentially her customers.
Slater’s students say they’ve benefited from her expertise, citing her positive influence
and industry smarts as reasons for nominating her for the award.
“She is very helpful and always has a positive attitude,” says one. “She is the best instructor in this course so far, and any student is lucky to have her.”

Lieutenant Governor Medals
A maximum of four medals are awarded annually to students at Red
River College who, in the opinion of a selection committee, combine
to the greatest extent in their graduating year academic and technical
achievement, involvement in College and/or community activities, and
good character.
Selection is made by a committee that includes representation from
the student body, faculty and administration.
A plaque listing previous years recipients is displayed in the Red River
College Library.

Red River College Gold Medals recognize students in diploma and degree
programs who attain the highest cumulative grade point average at or
