FAST A ABSTINENCE
AND OTHER ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT
2015
The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and
older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good
Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older,
up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to
fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash
Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals
on those days are to be light.
All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate
at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate
frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual
reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to
participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is
especially recommended.
All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl
which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world.

Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
February 14 we celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day. There are
a number of saints who had this name. The etymological root of
the name comes from the Latin for valens meaning strength or
courage. The most popular Saint Valentine was believed to have
been a bishop who was martyred under the persecution of the
Roman Emperor Claudius II. There is a church named for him at
Rome. After the Second Vatican Council a number of lesser
known saints were removed from the liturgical calendar. They are
still saints and we ask them to pray for us and our intentions.
How Saint Valentine became associated with romantic love,
boxes of candy and flowers is an interesting story. Since the
feast day is in the middle of February people started to think
about springtime and associated Saint Valentine’s Day with
spring. This was referenced in letters written in the High Middle
Ages that related birds mating and new life which came with
Spring to the feast day of Saint Valentine.
May we too be thankful for the gift of new life. May we thank
God for the gift of life and love that we received from our mother
and father. In this our 175th year as a community of faith in
Queen Village may we celebrate the gift of New Life in Christ.
Happy Saint Valentine’s Day everyone.
Father Oliver

CONSULTATION OF THE CLERGY
AND FAITHFUL
2015 SYNOD OF BISHOPS
In recent 2014 Synod of Bishops in Rome met to discuss the topic, The Pastoral Challenges of the Family
in the Context of Evangelization, and issued a final
document called the Relatio Synodi. This final document is the preparatory document or the Lineamenta
for the next Synod of Bishops in Rome. This Synod
will take place from October 4 to 25, 2015, with the
topic, The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the
Church and Contemporary World. Once again, as
with the most recent Synod of Bishops, the Office of
the Synod of Bishops invites a process of broad consultation among every component of the local Church,
including academic institutions, organizations, lay
movements and other ecclesial associations.
The principal document for this broad consultation is
Relatio Synodi or the Lineamenta which can be found
in English in its complete form on the Vatican Website, http://www.vatican.va. The consultation requires
a thoughtful reading and reflection on this document
and a response to questions that accompany it.
These questions, (copies available at entrance to
church) are arranged according to the outline of the
document and are preceded in some instances by a
summary of its principal points. Responses to these
questions are to be returned by Monday, March 9,
2015 to [email protected]. or mail
to the address on the hard copies. You can respond
online
by visiting http://archphila.org/synod2015/
