Institute of Health & Business Management (IOHBM)
INTRODUCTION
Jinnah Sindh Medical University
Jinnah Sindh Medical University came into existence on 1st June, 2012 by the Governor of
Sindh Article No. IV of 2012 issued by the Ordinance of Honorable Governor of Sindh Dr.
Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan in the presence of President of Pakistan Mr. Asif Ali Zardari and Chief
Minister of Sindh Mr. Syed Qaim Ali Shah, The Act of University was passed by Sindh
Assembly in March 2013. Due to tireless efforts of the SMC Alumni over the last several years,
SMC was finally upgraded to university status. This budding university is progressing on its
strong academic grounds. It will soon find its name among the high ranking universities of the
country based on its performance, specially transparent admission process and vigilant
examination department. The university is in the process of expansion and very soon new
faculties will be added to it. The university has a strong faculty committed to impart knowledge
and help the students in solving their problems.
Sindh Medical College
Jinah Medical College (SMC) was constituted by the Government of Sindh on 7th April 1973. In
the beginning, the college was built in the building of pediatric ward of Jinnah Postgraduate
Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi, which was previously an army barrack, constructed in the year
1865. In 1959 it became part of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). First batch of
about 200 students were admitted to first year MBBS in 1973 - 74. Professor Dr. Khwaja
Moinuddin Ahmed was the project director and first principal of the college. Subsequently new
building was constructed. Initially there were only three departments, Anatomy, Physiology and
Biochemistry. Later on a new academic block was constructed to house the departments of
Pathology, Forensic Medicine, and Community Medicine, with all the latest audiovisual teaching
facilities, laboratories and museums with an administration block being added later. Since its
4
inception in 1973, thirty three batches have graduated from this college. The students receive
their clinical training in three prestigious institutes of the country: Jinnah Postgraduate Medical
Centre (JPMC), National Institute of Child Health (NICH) and National Institute of
Cardiovascular Diseases (NIC VD) Karachi, which are now the affiliated teaching institutes of
Jinnah Sindh Medical University.
Sindh Medical College is providing the best learning environment for future doctors and more
than ten thousand students have graduated from this institute. It is a proud privilege that
majority of them are serving the humanity all over country and the substantial number of them
are post graduates, not only in Pakistan but around the globe as well.
Justification for Establishment of Institute of Health & Business Management
(IOHBM)
The challenges of the 21st century require that the professionals are multi skilled and multi
talented. This need for expertise in diverse disciplines require professionals to acquire exposure
and learning of everything that may be required at workplace. MBA is the "Gold Standard" in
management education and is increasingly becoming the an entry-level qualification for top jobs.
The field of MBA attracts professionals from all disciplines like, manufacturers, medicine,
engineering, sciences etc. In this age of dynamism it is required that the opportunities for easy
access to quality education in management be made widespread.
Business training for professionals/medical practitioners have been growing since the late 1990s
when the University of California, Irvine, became one of the first medical schools to offer a joint
MD/MBA program, as well as a health care-specific executive MBA. Now more than 50 percent
of medical schools offer the joint degree. It is also to be mentioned that management discipline
has now become the mother of all discipline e.g. (medical, engineering, pharmaceutical and
social sciences). The leading universities like Harvard Medical School of Medicine UT South
Western Devepot University US, Medical School in Boston, Cornel Medical University, New
York Medical School, University of Colorada, John Hopkin School of Medicine/Carey Business
School are offering MD/BBA/MBA programs.
5
Besides, these foreign universities, there are many medical leading universities in Pakistan are
offering BBA/MBA/Social Sciences degree e.g. (Baqai Medical University, Foundation Medical
University Islamabad, Dow Medical University Karachi, Ziauddin Medical University, Karachi).
MBA provides skills, expands networks and develops an understanding of administrative issues.
It trains the students with hard skills like Economics, Marketing, Accounting, Operations as well
as soft skills like Communication, Leadership and Decision making. The medical professionals
also need to understand the processes and posses these skills, so they can learn to run their
practices more efficiently. They must know how to conduct research, manage hospitals, shape
public policy, launch health care-related entrepreneurial ventures, balance medical needs with
economic realities, reduce costs to patients while increasing quality, and apply engineering to
medicine to produce the best medical devices.
Health care is one of the fastest growing industries in our country in the present scenario. New
hospital projects are coming across the country and several existing ones are expanding their
services. It’s important for a physician in a leadership role to be equipped with the knowledge to
analyze the business side of the enterprise. To do that, skills in financial statement analysis,
design, marketing, process improvement and lean healthcare are the key. Providing the
opportunity to learn these skills in their own alma mater will help them save precious resources
of time and money.
Management Sciences have been evolved as a multidisciplinary field. There is a growing
acknowledgement that medical practitioners/social scientists/engineers need to develop
leadership and management competencies to become more actively involved in strategic
planning, delivery and transformation of medical services in a pragmatic, insightful and
perspicacious manner. This emerging need has made it imperative for medical universities to
embark upon for a systematic review of what is known concerning the knowledge, skills and
attitudes of medical students regarding leadership and management. Although, little emphasis is
given to leadership and management in medical curricula at a few universities in Pakistan but it
does not fulfill the purpose satisfactorily.
6
Keeping the above-mentioned scenario in view, we propose to establish a separate institute under
the umbrella of Jinnah Sindh Medical University in the name of Institute of Health &Business
Management (IOHBM) where an extra-ordinary management intellect can be developed in the
context on knowledge, skills, competencies and attitudes. It is suggested that an elaborative
rehearsal based exercise should be carried out for curriculum development in this developing
field of medical education. Curricula should be developed to meet the challenges of the present
era in order to prepare medical students for responsibilities in management and leadership. This
initiative will not only help in developing and upgrading the competency and proficiency level of
medical students/ practitioners but also give support to the institution in becoming more selfreliant, autonomous, independent and self-contained in terms of academic funds.
