The Mount Olive Township Schools is bringing back its astoundingly successful STEM SUMMER CAMP! Join us for two exciting weeks of fun as we engage your child in superfun, outrageously imaginative, and sensationally stimulating studies of how the world works. Camps will run during the weeks of July 27 – July 31 and August 3 - August 7 for kids entering grades 1 through 8. Campers can enroll for just one week, or join us for two amazing weeks of non-stop science discoveries! …See course description on the other side. CAMPERS WILL BE AMAZED WHEN THEY: • Build and launch their own rocket that will fly over 1,000 feet into the air • Venture out of doors to build primitive shelters, design water purification devices and cook food in homemade solar ovens • Disassemble computers to see what’s inside • Design, build and program a complex robot to walk, talk, think, speak and even dance! • Dig into the Earth to discover the beautiful creepy crawlers living underneath Innovation Station STEM Camp is designed to transform laboratory science into fun and interactive learning experiences for kids ENTERING GRADES 1 - 8. Campers Entering Grades 1-2 Grades 1 – 2 Course Description Diving into Dirt Get ready to discover all the wonderful living plant life and creepy crawlers in our environment. Learn about living plants, bugs and creepy crawlers as you investigate the ecosystem of dirt. Campers will enjoy hands-on experience as they dig in the dirt for worms, grubs, pill bugs, plant roots, and so much more! There's even an opportunity for campers to view creepy and not so creepy crawlers under a microscope! Spy Science Calling all Sleuths! Solve crime scene mysteries by using science in this hands-on investigation of Spy Science. Uncover the science involved in gathering clues, searching for evidence and making/breaking codes by using high-tech spy equipment and crazy forensic tools. Enjoy physical activity while learning the art of being a spy. Hone in on your observation skills as you work with fellow sleuths to connect the dots in some very perplexing mysteries! Campers Entering Grades 3 – 8 Grades 3 – 8 Course Description Rockets Got a yearning for explosive projectiles? Blast off into this fun and activity-filled course learning about rockets and the physics of rocket flight! After learning the model rocket safety code, you will build a number of different rockets and participate in the launching, propulsion, and recovery of the rockets you build. Proudly demonstrate your knowledge of rocket principles with a launching finale friendly competition! 3…2…1… Blast off! Competitive Robots This is your opportunity to explore the exciting world of Robotics! Unleash the creative powers of building a really cool LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 ROBOT and programming a super-cool NAO HUMANOID ROBOT to walk, talk, think and do just about anything else you can imagine. Bring your robots to life with an easy, intuitive and icon-based programming interface. * Note: This is an introductory robotics course; no previous experience in robotics is necessary. Surviving Life after the Zombie Apocalypse The apocalypse is upon us, bringing down the electrical grid and upsetting life as we know it. Would you have what it takes to survive without modern conveniences? Rebuild with Science! Join our expert instructors as they teach you the ‘Rule of Threes’ survival skills as you build shelters, design water purification devices and create solar ovens. You may even find yourself standing at water's edge, casting a line with your homemade fishing pole. * Note: This course requires campers to take day trips to local state parks. Transportation fees are included in enrollment. What's Inside? Computers I (Grades 3-5) Have you ever wondered what makes a computer so smart? Explore the major parts of a computer and their purposes in our reverse engineering, What’s Inside? - Computers session. In this session, campers will disassemble and reconstruct desktop computers and laptops, discover the basics of software and investigate how software, hardware and firmware work together to make computers work. What's Inside? – Engines II (Grades 6-8) Students will discover how various modes of transportation work from human-powered machines to gasoline engines as they take apart and maintain everything from their own bikes to go-karts that they then get to drive! This course will teach students about the importance of gears, the parts of combustible engines from steam engines to gasoline engines, and how each is used and maintained. Finally, the last day of this course is spent on the track where students examine engine efficiency by counting the laps with the gas-powered gokarts that they are driving!
