EXHIBITION FOR THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF CUMULUS CALL FOR EXHIBITS Cumulus, the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media will be pleased to receive proposals from students, graduated students, researchers, PhDs for the exhibition DESIGN to FEED the WORLD, which will be opening as the final event of Cumulus Milan 2015. Cumulus is the only global association to serve art and design education and research. It is a forum for partnership and the transfer of knowledge and best practices. The exhibition is organized by Cumulus International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media, Politecnico di Milano, Sapienza University of Rome. Key Topics The exhibition will be held during Expo Milano 2015. The central theme of Expo Milan 2015, Feeding the Planet -‐ Energy for Life, involves five Thematic Routes which can be tailored according to visitors’ interests (http://www.expo2015.org/en/learn-‐more/the-‐theme/thematic-‐routes). We propose the following five thematic areas as Key Topics for this Call for Exhibits and We encourage submissions from different Design fields such as Communication, Interiors, Fashion, Product, Interaction, Service, …. 1. History of humankind. History of food. 2. Abundance of food. A paradox of contemporary time. 3. The future of food 4. Sustainable food=equitable world 5. Taste is knowledge Opening June 6, 2015 (closing on June 30, 2015) Key dates -‐ November, 30: launch of the call for submissions -‐ February, 15: final deadline for the submissions (EXTENDED to February 24) -‐ February, 28: Communication of the accepted Design Projects (Extended to March, 6) -‐ The arrival period for materials will be communicated later on to the selected designers Location The exhibition will be hosted at Fabbrica del Vapore (Milano), opening on the closing day of the Cumulus Conference, June 6, 2015. Entry Conditions The exhibition is open to individual students or groups from Universities and Schools that are members of Cumulus International Association of Universities and Collages of Art, Design and Media. Cumulus member institutions are invited to collect the best works of their students such as design projects developed as final degree theses, course projects, doctoral or research work. Graduate students may apply until one year after their date of graduation. Exhibits/projects can be existing ones or specially created for this exhibition. Students can participate as individuals or groups, but the works are to be submitted in the name of one of the Cumulus member institutions. Each Cumulus member institution is supposed to select no more than 10 pieces for the exhibition. Exhibition Format The exhibition will be displayed through three formats (choose one): a. Mockup, scale model and prototype (maximum size 50x50x50cm) b. Video (maximum 2 min, .mp4 or.avi) c. Poster (see the OverallCaptionDFW.pdf) Do not include these with your application. Selection will be carried out on the basis of overall captions (50x90 cm) explaining each project (see Submissions paragraph). The selected projects in the form of Mockup, scale model and prototype, Video or Poster in high resolution, should be shipped subsequently, when requested, for the setting up of the exhibition. Place and date will be announced later on. Exhibits can be existing ones or specially created for this exhibition. Please specify in the application form if the project already exists in the date of submission. We can possibly plan a small exhibition during the Milan Design Week as a preview of the Cumulus Exhibition of June. Submissions Participants should fill in the application form in every part, including the required attachments, and send it to [email protected] (as specified in the Application Form) before February 15, EXTENDED to February 24, 2015. Participation is free of charge; however, participants are required to cover the costs of shipping and returning the materials selected for display during the exhibition. Works are to be returned on the expense of participating students/Cumulus member institution; the host is not covering any expenses related to the return. If no return agreement is made with the host, the works will be destroyed on July 31, 2015. Submissions must include the following: (failure to meet all requirements may result in exclusion from the exhibition): 1. Application Form which includes a brief biography of the authors (see Attachment 3, maximum 500 characters, spaces included) and letter of intent with a clear description of the project and the proposed display (see Attachment 4, maximum 3000 characters, spaces included); 2. N.1 digital photo of each Author/s (see Attachment 1, jpg/tiff, 300dpi b/w) 3. N.1-‐3 digital photos of product/project (see Attachment 2, jpg/tiff, 300 dpi, colour) 4. Overall Caption -‐ Mockups or Videos following the attached format (OverallCaptionDFW.pdf) The Overall Caption will include: at least n.3 images displaying the submitted project (minimum 20 cm wide); detailed and clear description of the project (maximum 2000 characters, spaces included, Arial 18 pt); any other kind of additional material (sketches, drawings, …) The title block of the Overall Caption should be filled in following the format (OverallCaptionDFW.pdf). It should include: Selected Key Topic, Authors, University affiliation, Authors’ emails, 1 portrait picture of the author/s (5 cm wide, black and white), groups of more than 3 authors can insert a group photo; title of submitted project, brief description of the project and reference to the selected key topic (maximum 250 characters, spaces included). -‐ Posters Authors of posters can fill in the main area of the Overall Caption format as they wish but they should fill in the title block of the Overall Caption following the format (OverallCaptionDFW.pdf), which includes: Key Topic, Authors, University affiliation, Authors’ email addresses, 1 portrait picture of the author/s (5 cm wide, black and white), groups of more than 3 authors can insert a group photo; title of submitted project, brief description of the submitted project and reference to the selected key topic (maximum 250 characters, spaces included). Proposals and support material must be received via email ONLY by 12PM CET on February 15, EXTENDED to February 24, 2015. Late submissions will NOT be accepted. The Selection Criteria will be: -‐ relevance to the topic; -‐ originality of the Design Project; -‐ visual and technical quality of the materials submitted for display. Moreover, according to the Application Form, the Applicants have to certify to be the Authors of the submitted Design Project. Applicants must declare themselves authors of the Design Project submitted. Entries without clear authorship will not be admitted. Plagiarism will result in exclusion. Students who are not the immediate authors, but still have a consultancy or management role in the development of projects and/or collections produced under Brand Companies are admitted. Organization of the Exhibition Spaces The general setting of the exhibition spaces will be curated by the Organization Committee. The general costs of packaging, shipment and return of the products will be at the Applicant’s expense. Successful applicants will be notified of the conditions for the selected entries by February 28, extended to March 6, 2015. All shipments must be in packaging that can be reused to return the product. The Organization will insure all products against damage occurring during the exhibition; however, this insurance will not cover any damages occurring during shipment and return. Publication All selected Products/Projects will be published in a special issue of the Scientific Journal DIID -‐ Disegno Industriale Industrial Design (www.disegnoindustriale.net). In order to respect the print requirements of the publication, the Organization Committee may require further images. Bad print-‐quality of the submitted images may lead to exclusion from the publication. See the following Application Form.
