PREVIEW…VIEW…REVIEW First Sunday of Lent – 2/22/15 First Reading – Genesis 9:8-15 Psalm 25 Second Reading - 1 Peter 3:18-22 Gospel - Mark 1:12-15 FAST AND ABSTINENCE AND OTHER ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT 2015 The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are 14 years of age or older are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. All persons 18 years of age and older, up to and including their 59th birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions, as well as Lenten education programs. JAMES REGIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL I want to thank everyone who made last week’s Mass and Spaghetti Dinner for Emmaus Home such a success. There were well over 200 people there. We had the opportunity to do some very Christian things. We gave thanks and praise to God. We welcomed people who want to help those who are disadvantaged. We shared faith and fellowship. ST. JAMES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION is pleased to announce that they will once again be sponsoring high school scholarships to students who plan to attend an archdiocesan high school for the 2015-2016 school year. The scholarship applicant must be a practicing Catholic from a Delaware County parish. The students eligible are graduating 8th graders and current high school students. The scholarship applications are available upon request (phone: 610-876-2006 or email: stjdoghouse@ comcast.net). Applicants are evaluated on several categories, i.e., academic achievement, community service and financial need. The student is also required to write an essay on an assigned topic. All applications with the complete requested information must be returned by 2:00 pm Wednesday, April 8, 2015. In my homily, I said nothing good is going to happen in an empty building. But wonderful things can happen when faith filled people come together to do the work of the Lord. Last Saturday, St. Gabriel’s parish went to St. Margaret Mary’s for Emmaus Home, and got things off to a very good start. Peace, Fr. Orth \\ 205 Page 4 of 5 SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME There will be an informational scholarship workshop for 8th grade and high school student parents on Wednesday, February 18, at 7:00 pm.
