FOR HEALTHY LIVING
HOW ARE YOU DOING?
Statistics show that, as a whole, all the good
intentions we have on January 1, begin to fade by
February 18. That is, all of our healthy New Year’s
resolutions begin to fade as the winter blahs wear
away our motivation. This is where we can help!
ONE-ON-ONE COACHING. We offer a free program
to members called Jump Start. Members will
meet with a coach who will sit down and discuss
goals to help the member figure out what
activities, classes, or fitness equipment they
might be interested in. They also discuss
barriers to exercise and finding enjoyable
activities.
The Y provides a huge SOCIAL NETWORK to
members. It becomes very easy to meet people
while you work out in a class or in our wellness
center on the equipment. As people get to
know each other, they begin to hold each other
accountable for coming on a regular basis. Many
times members will choose to train and run
races together or schedule to attend classes
together during the week.
VARIETY helps members to keep from getting bored
and giving up. Members can enjoy swimming,
group exercises classes, walking or running on
our indoor track, playing basketball or
volleyball, utilizing our state-of-the art
exercise machines, or attending one of the
specialized small group classes offered by our
personal trainers.
CONVENIENCE. The Y is open every day of the
week. You can choose to come in early before
work, at your lunch break, or later in the
evening. We also have up to two hours of FREE
babysitting per visit for our members who are
working out in the building.
ACCOUNTABILITY. Sometimes when motivation is
lacking or a member just doesn’t know how to
achieve their goals, hiring a personal trainer can
help them be successful. A personal trainer at
the Y will develop a program that is appropriate
for the member and the investment in a trainer
usually is enough motivation to keep the member
coming!

stuck to your healthy living plans today”

MLK DAY OF SERVICE
The North Canton YMCA recently had the opportunity to
partner with Walsh University and Character Counts! In
North Canton during the Martin Luther King Day of
Service. This initiative set the goal that 1000 hours of
service would be performed in Stark County in one day
by Walsh Students, staff, and community partners.
These volunteers were sent all throughout Stark County
to various sites, including the NC Y, where our schoolaged members were treated to a wide variety of
activities such as games, mini service project crafts,
inflatables, a DJ and a light lunch. (Thank you to Subway,
Chipotle and Washington Square Giant Eagle for your
help!) Many of the activities were run by members of
Walsh’s football team. In addition, we had other
volunteers, Y Leader’s Club members and members of
our Camp Tippecanoe staff to keep the fun rolling! We
are not sure who had the most fun; the kids, the
volunteers, or the staff. One thing we do know is that
we are already looking forward to next year, as well as
future opportunities to partner again with Walsh.
“Life’s most persistent and urging question is,
‘What are you doing for others?’
-Martin Luther King Jr.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
Its no secret… When the final bell rings at North
Canton Middle School , a good number of those kids
head straight to their favorite place to hang out and
blow off some steam; the Y.
You will see the kids in many areas of the building- in
groups, working on their homework, playing basketball
in the gym, or just socializing with friends in the Youth
Lobby.
We have stepped up our game to engage and serve
these young members by:
 Offering “Middle School After School”; different
large group games and activities on Tuesdays and
Fridays (school days) from 3:00-4:00
 All games in the Youth Lobby are offered at no
charge- including DDR, Xbox and Air Hockey
 Youth lobby staff have been trained to interact
with kids- each bringing their unique personalities,
skills and talents.
 More Y staff moving around, with a heightened
awareness of opportunities to build relationships
and avoid problems; looking for those “teachable”
moments.
 Special “Member Appreciation” events just for this
population
