Because of your continued generosity special education students are given the tools to succeed, the homeless are given a safe place to eat, sleep, and get back on their feet, students in rough neighborhoods are given a safe place to learn, My Dear Friends, Lent presents us with many challenges and the best way to begin is with good preparation. That is why I am asking all of you, young and old, to warmly welcome the preacher of our Forty Hours, next week, Father John P. Stokely. Father was ordained in 2013 and is the Parochial Vicar of Saint Robert’s in Warrington, PA. These Forty Hours is a wonderful time to stop in the Church, get recollected and begin the process of conversion and repentance called for by this holy season. There are time sheets available to sign up for adoration but you could always surprise the Lord with a visit! The psalm sings today, “I turn to You, Lord, in time of trouble, and You will fill me with the joy of salvation.” So let the barriers down and trust in the Lord of the Harvest to walk with you into a new era of grace, healing and hope! May your new Lenten time be fruitful and grace filled. May you find new ways to see God in the people you meet and in your families, Father Cioppi 027 MDP for 021515 4 REMEMBER PLEASE, ARCHBISHOP CHAPUT is th visiting us on February 28 at the 5:15 Mass! Please make every effort to join us. We want his first visit to our parish to be a memorable one! PREPARING FOR LENT – OUR RICE BOWL FOCUS As we begin our Lenten Journey, let us remember that everything we do matters and that all of our sacrifices change lives. Lent is a time for Fasting, Prayer and Alms Giving. All of these practices bring us closer to God and to each other. Always remember – what you do matters. May our fasting be a hunger for justice, our alms a making of peace and our prayers the change of humble and grateful hearts. Let us put our faith into action to work in love for the good of our world. Our Alms Giving will be focused on our donations to the Rice Bowl effort. These donations may be placed in the poor boxes at the doors of our church. Please take a rice bowl home with you for your donations – let it be a daily reminder of this Lenten Journey that we make together. IN OUR PARISH ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES Ashes will be distributed during the 8:00AM, 12:05PM & 7:30PM Masses on Wednesday, th February 18 . COFFEE & DONUTS 1. There will be coffee and donuts after the th 9:30 Mass on Sunday, February 15 in the vestibule of the Church. The men of MDPYA will also be participating in the Men of Malvern Retreat with other Men of MDP on Friday, March 6 - Sunday, March 8. Please contact Brandon Ritrovato at [email protected] to RSVP or for more information. FORTY HOURS BEGINS FEBRUARY 22ND Forty Hours Devotion provides a wonderful opportunity for the spiritual growth of our parish as a whole, and for each of us as individuals. Pope Pius the XII taught us that “this practice of adoration has a valid and firm foundation”. Pope John Paul II highly recommended public and private devotion of the Blessed Sacrament. Around the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, parishes participate in Forty Hours to continue this faith-filled tradition throughout the year. Forty Hours will begin on Sunday, February 22nd as the Blessed Sacrament is exposed beginning at 12:30 PM, immediately after the 11:30 AM Mass. We will gather at 7:30 PM for our evening devotion; Father John P. Stokely will be our homilist. On Monday, rd th February 23 and Tuesday, February 24 the Blessed Sacrament will once again be exposed throughout the day, beginning after the 8:00AM daily Mass providing an opportunity for prayer. Evening devotions will begin at 7:30 PM on Monday. The closing of Forty Hours will take place on Tuesday with evening devotions and Eucharistic Procession beginning at 7:30 PM. Father Cioppi encourages each of us to participate in these Forty Hours as frequently as possible to continue our Lenten practice of prayer. Sign-up sheets are located at the doors of the church so that we can insure that the Blessed Sacrament is never left alone during these Forty Hours. 7TH- 9TH GRADE SERVICE PROJECT: CAMILLA HALL FEB 22, 2015 Our next event is a trip to Camilla Hall Nursing Home for retired IHM Sisters to play games and visit with the Sisters. Hills, Malvern, PA. The retreat is from 6:30 PM Friday, th March 6 until 12:30 PM, Sunday, th March 8 . Jesus suffered and died to show us how much He loves us and now He expects all of us to find ways to grow in our love for Him. One of the best ways to do that is to give Him 42 hours away from our everyday world at Saint Joseph’s in the Hills. When we devote ourselves totally to Him, He never fails to draw us closer to Him. If you are interested in attending, please contact Vic Limongelli at 610-265-7824, Chris Welde at 215-972-2364 or Dan Rooney at 610-724-1597. Friendship and community satisfy that longing with bonds of common interest and love. Marriage is a uniquely intimate form of friendship that calls a man and a woman to love each other in the manner of God’s covenant. Marriage is a Sacrament. Married love is fruitful and offered without reservation. This love is in the image of Jesus’s faithfulness to the Church. PREP KID’S CORNER (TOP SECRET, NO PARENTS ALLOWED!) This Week’s Memo: St. Damien Shows Jesus’s Love. Today in the Bible stories we hear of Jesus healing a man with leprosy. There have been many brave and kind saints who have followed Jesus’s footsteps and cared for people with this disease. One of these brave people was St. Damien, who (even though he was healthy!) moved to an island in Hawaii where all the lepers lived. He helped them build a loving and beautiful neighborhood, with a good 027 MDP for 021515 7 Church and good homes. He helped people to see that God loved them and cared for them even during their illness. St. Damien, pray for us! Liturgical Trivia! Which of the following can you eat this Wednesday: chicken nuggets, grilled cheese, bacon, cheesesteak? Why? What’s special about Wednesday? Last week’s answer: trick question! You wouldn’t use a bonfire on “ember days.” They are actually days of fasting and prayer (like 3-day mini-Lents) at the beginning of the seasons of winter, spring, summer, and fall. The point of these celebrations was to give thanks to God the Creator who gives us nature, time, and the beautiful seasons! Although these traditions became less important after Vatican 2, your grandparents might remember them!
