Basketball News Update
Last week I let you know that Andrew Panayiotou had again made the Vic Metro U18 Team to compete in
the U18 National Basketball Championships in April. He has now been elected as the Captain of that
team. Congratulations to Andrew on this great honour. He follows other notable past Captains such as
Dante Exxum.
9A Basketball
The 9A team were up against one of the powerhouse basketball schools of the AGSV Summer
Competition, Trinity, on Saturday. As they warmed up we could see it would be a tough match with two of
their players being very big! Bigger even than our Nick Ioannou.
During the first half we tried to keep with them playing man to man, but their strong players were able to
pick off some of our slower passes and make some easy transition layups. In offense we had trouble
scoring against this big side.
During the second half we switched to zone defence and this slowed up their scoring quite a bit. We were
able to take some defensive rebounds when they missed their long shots and swing back into attack.
However we were always struggling against this strong team. The final score was 7 – 51.
All boys kept trying and scorers were Nick Ioannou 4 and Toby Bedford 3.

10A Basketball
After a good team win last week, the boys headed down to Kew to take on Trinity Grammar. With Finn
English rostered off this week, the lads knew that they had to bring a more physical presence to the game.
MGS started off slow, being down 10-2 early, but with fantastic shooting from the team we were able to
fight back. Thomas Song was protecting the ring with fearsome blocks and big rebounds, Ollie Argyrou
was dropping buckets like rain falling from the sky, and Tom Ahearn andTom Baring, were both possessed
on defence, attacking the offense with a fire in their eyes. Cas Yiontis was an imposing figure in the post
whilst Henry Roach was taking elbows to the face and bounced up like nothing had happened. When
Jansen Peterson went down hard after taking a charge the team seemed to ease up and let the game get
out of hand. The things that we as a team need to take out of this game are boxing out/rebounding, and
never take your foot off the pedal.
After a closely fought game we ended up losing 33-38. Credit to the parents for coming down, Mr Gourley
for scoring, and “Sol-Money” for coaching.
