About the University
The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is a premier institution for legal education,
established in the year 1997 in pursuance of the Tamil Nadu Act No. 43 of 1997. His
Excellency Shri. K. R. Narayanan, the then President of India inaugurated it on September 9,
1997. As a sui generis model, the University is the first of its kind in the country offering
legal education both on its campus and through the affiliated law colleges in the State of
Tamil Nadu. Within the campus, the university has established the School of Excellence in
Law [SOEL] in the quest for achieving greater heights in legal education with a multidisciplinary approach. In SOEL, courses from research (i.e.) Ph.D in Law and Ph.D in interdisciplinary, eight Post Graduate courses, B.A., B.L., [Hons], B.Com., B.L., [Hons], and
B.L., [Hons] are being offered. Apart from that, the Distance Education Department is
offering eleven Post Graduate Diplomas and one Certificate Course. Under the visionary
leadership of our Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr). P. Vanangamudi, School of Excellence in Law
[SOEL] is confidently marching towards its goals.
Background
Women, the world over, face gender discrimination in one form or the other. The principle of
gender equality is enshrined in the Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and
Directive Principles of State Policy of the Constitution of India. The Constitution not only
grants equality to women, but also empowers the state to adopt measures of positive
discrimination in favour of women. Various laws, development policies, plans and programs
aim at advancement of women in different spheres. In recent years, the empowerment of
women has been recognised as the central issue in determining the status of women. The
women's movement and a wide-spread network of non-governmental organizations are
ceaselessly working for the empowerment of women. But, still there exists a wide gap
between the goals enunciated in the Constitution, legislations, policies, plans, programs and
related mechanisms on the one hand and social and behavioural reality of the status of
women in India and other. Thus, this workshop focuses on identifying the issue and
problems hampering women empowerment in India and to offer suggestions to rectify the
same.
Themes:
The workshop presentation is designed to create an environment for awareness and
sensitising in the context of women empowerment in the 21st Century.

POLITICAL EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN.
EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN IN THE WORK SPHERE.
